Review: Are We Good?

Official Synopsis: Comic and podcast pioneer Marc Maron reflects on loss and growth after the death of his partner, Lynn Shelton. As he processes grief and crafts comedy, he revisits his career, family struggles, and the evolving comedy world at 60.

I like Marc Maron's comedy, but I loved Lynn Shelton's directing. She had a great eye and made so many interesting indie features. She was taken far too soon by a blood disease she didn't even know she had back in 2020. This documentary is a way for her partner Marc to process his grief while still keeping her spirit alive.

Are We Good? is a mix of sweet and cynical, just as you'd expect it to be. Maron has always been the type to lay it all out for his fans. His podcast, standup, and instagram lives are proof of that, and he does the same here. What this turns into is a very sweet look into what a Comedian does after loss. Do they still keep being funny? Is that appropriate? If so, how soon? 

I realized as this doc came to a close that I would've preferred one that focused more on Lynn as a person, this is really Marc's journey and what she meant to him, and that's fine. It's still a very sweet and sincere watch. I just wish it had more Lynn, but I'm sure Marc feels that way too.

    I have not seen anything by Lynn Shelton which is a shame as her work looked very interesting. I do like Marc Maron as I do feel sad for him as he really cared about her. I'll watch this once I do a dive into her work.

Recently, I was talking to someone about who I thought were the best child actors when I was also a child.  Two that really stood out to me were Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello, and one film those two were in together was called Radio Flyer.  Then I was reminded about the uniqueness of this film. Instead of reviewing the film, I wanted to have an open discussion about the ending. It deals with a tough issue; child abuse. What I’ve noticed is the way that the film ends is interpreted many different ways, and the filmmakers never came forward to say what was right and wrong. Earlier this week I made a post where I ran through the letters of the alphabet with my favorite movie titles. Review: The Ugly Stepsister
