2017 Academy Award Winners

Holy fucking shit. That's about the most articulate thing I can say at this point. The Best Picture envelope fiasco quite literally sobered by ass up. I was a bottle of wine in. I'm actually really mad for a number of reasons. 1) That Moonlight didn't get to properly enjoy its Best Picture win, and it will forever be remembered by this fuck up. 2) That the La La Land team actually got through their entire speeches before someone stopped them and 3) Why didn't they question that envelope more?

Anyways, aside from that colossal fuck up. Kimmel was an excellent host. I love his ongoing "feud" with Matt Damon and how it made it into several parts of the broadcast "Ben Affleck and Guest" I went 15/25 with my picks (would've been 16/25 with the first movie they called Best Picture) Below are the winners + my thoughts.

Best Picture
Arrival
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell Or High Water
Hidden Figures
La La Land
Lion
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight
I got my wish and didn't even get to enjoy properly. Even worse, the actual WINNERS didn't get to enjoy it properly.

Best Actor
Casey Affleck - Manchester By The Sea
Andrew Garfield - Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling - La La Land
Viggo Mortensen - Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington - Fences
I really thought Denzel was going to be an upset. I'm disappointed they went with Affleck. He was good, but he wasn't Denzel. Brie Larson's face after she read the name said it all.

Best Actress
Isabelle Huppert - Elle
Ruth Negga - Loving
Natalie Portman - Jackie
Emma Stone  - La La Land
Meryl Streep  - Florence Foster Jenkins
*sighs* I'm sorry, Natalie Portman. I love Emma Stone, and I loved her speech, but *sigh*

Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali - Moonlight
Jeff Bridges  -Hell Or High Water
Lucas Hedges  -Manchester By The Sea
Dev Patel - Lion
Michael Shannon - Nocturnal Animals
Another gracious speech from the wonderful Ali. Great win.

Best Supporting Actress
Viola Davis - Fences
Naomie Harris - Moonlight
Nicole Kidman - Lion
Octavia Spencer - Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams - Manchester by the Sea
This wasn't going to anyone else. So happy for her.

Best Director
Denis Villeneuve - Arrival
Mel Gibson - Hacksaw Ridge
Damien Chazelle - La La Land
Kenneth Lonergan - Manchester By The Sea
Barry Jenkins - Moonlight
Chazelle goes down in history as being the youngest person to win Best Director at age 32. All things aside, that's pretty cool.

Best Cinematography
Arrival
La La Land
Lion
Moonlight
Silence
I really wanted Moonlight to win this, but I can't be too upset. All 5 of these nominees looked great.

Best Documentary Feature
Fire at Sea
I Am Not Your Negro
Life, Animated
OJ: Made in America
13th
OJ: Made in America also goes down in history as the first mini series to ever win an Oscar.

Best Documentary Short Subject
Extremis
4.1 Miles
Joe’s Violin
Watani: My Homeland
The White Helmets

Best Live Action Short
Ennemis Entreniers
La Femme et le TGV
Silent Nights
Sing
Timecode

Foreign Language Film
Land of Mine
A Man Called Ove
The Salesman
Tanna
Toni Erdmann
I should've picked The Salesman. I had Toni as my win.

Best Sound Editing
Arrival
Deepwater Horizon
Hacksaw Ridge
La La Land
Sully
Soooooo happy about this one!

Best Film Editing
Arrival
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
La La Land
Moonlight
This surprised me. While I didn't like Hacksaw, it was edited very well. But I thought for sure La La Land would win here.

Best Visual Effects
Deepwater Horizon
Doctor Strange
The Jungle Book
Kubo and the Two Strings
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Best Costume Design
Allied
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Florence Foster Jenkins
Jackie
La La Land
I thought La La Land was taking it too, but Fantastic Beasts surprised. I can't argue with that.

Best Makeup and Hair Styling
A Man Called Ove
Star Trek Beyond
Suicide Squad
And do think "Academy Award Winner Suicide Squad" didn't end up being the most fucked up thing we heard tonight.

Best Sound Mixing
Arrival
Hacksaw Ridge
La La Land
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Best Original Score
Jackie
La La Land
Lion
Moonlight
Passengers

Best Original Song
“Audition” - La La Land
“Can’t Stop the Feeling!” - Trolls
“City of Stars” - La La Land
“The Empty Chair” - Jim: The James Foley Story
“How Far I’ll Go” - Moana
This was so predictable. I wanted How Far I'll Go to win. Poor Lin-Manuel Miranda was cock blocked for his EGOT. But if they were going to give it to La La Land, it should've went to Audition. That was the better song.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Arrival
Fences
Hidden Figures
Lion
Moonlight
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassss

Best Original Screenplay
Hell or High Water
La La Land
The Lobster
Manchester By the Sea
20th Century Women
I thought La La Land was taking this too. I didn't like Manchester, I was rooting for the Lobster, but from what I hear Manchester had an amazing screenplay. Maybe it didn't translate well.

Best Production Design
Arrival
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Hail Caesar
La La Land
Passengers
I'm happy La La Land won this. Amazing production.

Best Animated Feature
Kubo and the Two Strings
Moana
My Life as a Zucchini
The Red Turtle

Best Animated Short
Blind Vaysha
Borrowed Time
Pear Cider and Cigarettes
Pearl
Piper

  1. I'm still trying to recover from that Best Picture shit. Anyway, I can't believe Denzel lost to Affleck. He was so damn superior. I loved La La Land but I was rooting for The Lobster as well. Easily the best original script out there. Apparently the others don't think so. Anyway, let's look on the bright side, Passengers didn't win any Oscar :)

    1. I hate that Affleck got a win, I really thought Denzel had a chance. I'm guessing The Lobster was a bit too weird for most voters. lol

  2. That ending to a pretty good Oscars was truly a WTF moment and I felt bad for the people of Moonlight. I also felt bad for Warren Beatty who knew something was up but, with millions of people watching and nothing like this happening before, I can't blame him for not questioning it. I was dumbfounded! I was rooting for The Lobster to win because it was so unique in its story. I am not happy that Suicide Squad won...should have gone to Star Trek. I thought Jimmy Kimmel did a great job but I already heard some bashing...no one is ever satisfied are they? I thought Viola Davis's acceptance speech was great and so was the statement from the man who won best Foreign film. I also loved the memorial spot ...I always love that because it pays respect to the people who worked in that industry.

    1. Someone did read the wrong card during an Oscars in the 60's too, but I don't know for which category. Suicide Squad over Star Trek is ridiculous.

  3. I just can't with what happened. Still laughing. A horrible moment but there is no excuse for everyone blaming Beatty and Horowitz violently yanking that card of his hand

    1. I didn't think too much about Horowitz taking the envelope from me. I think I was still in "holy shit" mode. lol

  4. Think it's a little harsh to blame Beatty of Dunaway, Beatty clocked something was wrong but had no idea what to do as he's not a professional TV presenter

But I'm happy with Moonlight won i'm not angry because I bloody love drama and it was a predictable affair up to that point.

    1. I can't help but be a little frustrated with them because their envelope said Emma's name. Common sense aught to point out the issue with that. I don't think they deserve the brunt of the blame though. Whoever let the LLL folks continue to speak annoys me worse.

  5. Ughhhhh HATE How a historic win was reduced to a joke. Thrilled about Moonlight winning though. And Washington should have TOTALLY won over Affleck.

Yeah, all you can do is sigh about Emma Stone winning for no reason at all.

    Yayyyy Viola!

Moonlight or Arrival should have totally won best cinematography.

lol O.J. Made in America = a mini series (a great miniseries, but a miniseries nonetheless)

As much as I wanted The Salesman to win, I was shocked that it did.

STOKED for the best adapted screenplay win!

Yeah...Manchester by the Sea was so very remote. I haven't read the screenplay, but how could it win over 20th Century Women??

    1. 20th Century Women was great. I would've picked it over Manchester.

I liked O.J Made in America a lot, but come on lol. A doc like Audrie and Daisy could've been there in its place.

  6. "Ben Affleck and Guest" is making me lol just thinking about it. Jimmy Kimmel's show doesn't air in the UK so this feud thing was new to me, and I'm absolutely loving it!

    1. Really? Oh man they've been doing this for years. You need to look up Sarah Silverman's song she wrote when she dated Kimmel.

  7. I'm so with you on your sentiments about the BP fiasco. I haven't seen Manchester, just yet, but Denzel was amazing. Not really all that surprised Affleck won, though, because its been trending that way for quite some time. Love the Kimmel/Damon feud, too. The two of them always make me laugh.

    1. I really thought Denzel had a shot at an upset. That bums me out so much.

  8. Your first and last photos sum it up so well :) Two of my favourite moments.

    1. Viola with an Oscar just looks so right.

    2. Does it bother you she wasn't nominated for Best Actress instead of Best Supporting?

    3. It's annoying, but I wanted her to win so badly that I excuse it.
