Thursday Movie Picks: Movies About Painters

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is about painters. I was never good at painting myself. I do spend a lot of time going to local art galleries and fantasizing about having enough money to fill my house with abstract art. Here are a few of my favorite movies about painters.

1) Factory Girl

This film is about Edie Sedgwick when she first arrives in New York, then becomes Andy Warhol's muse. Sienna Miller and Guy Pearce give amazing performances. This film is severely underrated.

2) Girl With The Pearl Earring

This is an interesting film about a servant of a painter. I love the cast in this. Just ignore Cillian Murphy's terrible wig.

3) Exit Through The Gift Shop

This documentary about the famed street artist Banksy is so different. Quite like him, to be honest. Plus it has an amazing title.

  1. Oh God this is like the 3rd picks post I read and where is Pollock? did no one see this? I only saw half so far but come on people...everyone is in such a need of me writing this Ed Harris performances post...

Girl with Pearl Earring is such a good movie but Colin Firth was a bit miscast in it

  2. We match with the wonderful Girl With the Pearl Earring. I love the performances and thought it was so well acted with the subtle sexual tension between Vermeer and the girl. I would love to see Factory Girl because, well, It's Andy Warhol and he was just brilliantly nuts. The title alone on the documentary makes me want to see this because it is so true anytime you go on any tour or escapade.

    1. Factory Girl is so underrated. Pearce is the best Warhol I've seen.

  4. I can't believe I still haven't seen Girl with a Pearl Earring, it sounds so interesting. And there's Cillian Murphy in it which is always nice.

    1. He is. It's not a huge part but he doesn't need that. He's always a welcomed presence.

  5. Brittani, I almost went with Factory Girl and it's definitely a film I might find interesting enough to try should it become available on Netflix or Amazon Prime but I don't want to have pay anything extra to see it. :) My friend Birgit also share The Girl with the Pearl Earring and I'd like to see that, too. Thanks for sharing your picks and for visiting today. Have a good evening!

  7. We have a match with Exit. What an excellent film. I still need to see the other two, especially TGwtPE. It's getting tons of love today.

  8. I've only seen Girl with the Pearl Earring which was quite wonderful, don't know why it didn't occur to me! I don't remember Cillian's wig but thought Firth, Johannson and Judy Parfitt were all wonderful.

I've meant to see both of your others. I've read the George Plimpton bio of Edie Sedgwick, a deeply troubled girl from a family that could be a poster ad for dysfunction.

I discovered when I was pulling titles that I don't have any films about painters that I love passionately but these three are ones I liked.

The Naked Maja (1958)-Tale of the renowned painter Francisco Goya (Anthony Franciosa) and his passionate affair with the Duchess of Alba (Ava Gardner) , purportedly the model for the title painting. Set against Spain’s war with France and the Inquisition, though shot in Italy, the film is a visual treat with a good performance by Gardner but missing a certain spark, perhaps due to the fact that the stars detested each other behind the scenes.

Lust for Life (1956)-Biography of Vincent Van Gogh with an intense, driven performance by near lookalike Kirk Douglas as the tortured artist. Since he wasn’t acknowledged until after his death the film is a relentlessly grim look at the cost and weight of unrecognized genius. Overlong but loaded with works by the master.

The Moon and Sixpence (1942)-Inspired by the life of Paul Gauguin and based on the Somerset Maugham novel, the film tells the story of Charles Strickland (George Sanders) who throws his staid life as a married stockbroker away to run away to the South Seas to paint with nary a thought to the consequences. Well-acted with a superior cast but the lead character is an almost completely despicable person so it’s difficult to care too much for his story or fate.

    1. I haven't heard of any of these. The Naked Maja sounds like something I'd like for sure.

  9. We share a film in our list. Exit Through the Gift Shop is great. Factory Girl I actually didn't like at all. Guy Pearce is a good Warhol but David Bowie is the definitive Warhol in Basquiat. My issues about that film was more with some of the dramatic liberties made about Sedgwick and Warhol which were exaggerated. Plus, I really didn't like seeing Hayden Christensen as Bob Dylan.

    1. Hayden definitely wasn't very good but he wasn't in it enough for me to care. Someone gave me a book on Edie that I haven't gotten the chance to finish reading, so I'm not sure what was real or fake there. I just thought it was a good story.

  10. Girls with Pearl Earring seems so popular this week. I haven't watched it though.
Your image of Factory Girl along with the description kinda hook me anyway.

  11. Exit Through the Gift Shop is the only film here that I've seen and I like it a great deal. Paints a very compelling and unique portrait of the artistic process. Made me laugh a number of times aswell.

  12. I almost picked Factory Girl. I thought the film was brilliant when I first saw it but there is something that bothers me, I think its the demise of Edie. Also Hayden Christenson or whatever his name is so gad damn awful he almost ruined it.
