Thursday Movie Picks: Superheroes - TV Edition

We have another TV Edition from Wandering Through the Shelves. This week we're talking about Superheroes. I decided to go with one show I enjoy now, and two I loved when I was a kid.

1) Daredevil

I was never a huge fan of Daredevil, especially after that disastrous Ben Affleck movie, but add a wonderful actor in Charlie Cox and Netflix's vision and this has easily become my favorite of all the Marvel TV efforts.

2) Batman: The Animated Series

I loved watching this on Saturday mornings as a kid. Until Nolan got his hands on Batman, this was my favorite way to watch him.

3) The X-Men

Another one I loved when I was a kid. I miss liking all things X-Men. I haven't enjoyed anything since X2.

  1. I was in my 30's when I found the X-Men on TV and I would watch it:) I enjoyed it even though I never knew what good Jubilee did in fighting the bad guys:) I haven't seen the other 2 but i think many forms of Batman will be around today. I also loved Gargoyles

  2. I LIVED for that X-Men animated series. Still the best X-Thing, although I have enjoyed all the movies to varying degrees (except for The Last Stand. That one was pretty bad).

    1. As far as X-Men movies go, I've only liked the first two, though Logan looks pretty great.

Why didn't I think of animated shows?! I used to love watching Batman Brave and the Bold on a Saturday morning!

    1. I hadn't watched Luke Cage when I originally wrote this post and I don't watch any of the DC shows, so I had to go to animated lol.

  4. Brittani, when our kids were young they liked the animated X-Men series. I can't recall if they watched the cartoon Batman series or not. Wouldn't it be cool to have a super power? Good picks!

  5. The only one of these I've seen is Batman though I watched the Adam West live action one far more. Just like now I did watch much animation as a kid so I'm not sure I even knew X-Men was a cartoon! Oops.

I had to cast around some for three this week and actually chose an animated show simply because it was so ridiculous.

The Tick (1994-1996)-Ridiculously amusing animated series about a somewhat thick superhero clad in a bright blue costume along with his moth costume wearing sidekick Arthur, who has a wry, patient attitude with his often lunk-headed compatriot fights the bad guys in “The City”. They blunder about but still somehow manage to say the day. What else is there to say about a superhero whose call to arms is “SPOON!”

The Flash (1990-1991)-When Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp), a forensic police scientist, suffers a freak accident being struck by lightning and covered in chemicals at the same time a chain reaction occurs giving him super human powers and the ability to move at the speed of sound. While learning how to control his new found powers a calamity occurs which sets him on the path to be the protector of the good people of Central City. Short-lived series had a nice sense of humor mixed in with its action sequences.

The Greatest American Hero (1981-1983)-After a chance encounter with aliens in the desert late at night where he is gifted with a magical red suit high school teacher Ralph Hinkley (William Katt) along with fellow witness FBI man Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp) attempt to fight crime using the suit’s powers. A couple of problems present themselves right away, Ralph and Bill are a silk and sandpaper match and even more troubling the pair have lost the instructions for the suit so they have to puzzle out how it works as they go along leading to trouble and a lot of bruises for Ralph. Engagingly played by Katt & Culp along with Connie Sellecca as Ralph’s girlfriend Pam.

  6. Well you know I'm incapable of following any of this. We did give Daredevil a go but I let Sean continue it as he wished. I have such comic book fatigue that I just cannot.

  7. I haven't seen those shows except for bits of X-Men. Most notably the episode that was created for the Internet phenomenon that was Juggernaut Bitch!

  8. I also went with Batman: TAS. Such a fantastic show, that one. Almost went with X-Men, too. Confession: I need to watch Daredevil.

  10. Love the 90's X-Men animated series. The Spiderman one weas great as well.

Love the DareDevil TV series. I rewatched the DareDevil movie recently and it's as bad as I remembered it, hmm probably more in comparison to the TV series.
