Thursday Movie Picks: Characters Magically Aging Up or Down

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is all about magically aging. It's too bad this isn't a TV pick so we could add all the times someone replaced a baby with a toddler and acted like no one noticed. Since this category is very specific, there wasn't a lot to choose from. I had to cheat a bit

1) 13 Going on 30

I haven't seen this in years but I remember thinking it was pretty cute after initially writing it off. Jennifer Garner really shined.

2) Freaky Friday

Yes, I'm talking about the 2003 version. I haven't seen the original. Tess and Anna switch bodies so mother becomes daughter and vice versa. Ahh man, remember when Lindsay Lohan had it? I actually jammed out to Ultimate quite a bit. (The song she sings at the end)

3) Orphan

This one is a bit of a cheat as there's no magic involved, but really. That twist with Esther..did you see that coming?

  1. LOVE your twisty pick of Orphan!

I was going to pick Freaky Friday, which I love, but... I looked ahead a few weeks and I'm going to need it then lol.

We match on 13 Going On 30, which is just the cutest.

  2. 13 Going on 30 is a cute bit of fluff. Freaky Friday is fun as well both versions. I haven't seen, and probably won't see, Orphan.

Like Dan I stayed away from body switches since that upcoming but it made it extremely tough to come up with three without them.

Big (1988)-After being denied admittance to a carnival ride 12 year old Josh Baskin (David Moscow) makes a wish he was big on an antique fortune telling machine. He wakes up the next morning to discover his wish has come true and he is now a 30 year old man (Tom Hanks). Panicked he finds his best friend Billy, convinces him of the truth and they go on a hunt for the machine while Josh hides out in New York. By luck he gets a job in a toy company and because of his innocence manages to shoot up the corporate ladder with amazing speed while discovering romance with Susan, another exec at the company. Beguiling comedy with assured direction by Penny Marshall and captivating performances by the cast none more so than Hanks.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)-In 1918 a child is born with all the characteristics of an old man and over the course of his lifetime ages backwards. Complicated fantasy has a gossamer sheen and thoughtful performances by Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and an extraordinary one by Taraji P. Henson as his caregiver Queenie.

17 Again (2009)-Mike O’Donnell (Matthew Perry) had to abandon his dreams 20 years ago when his girlfriend became pregnant and they wed. He is now unemployed, estranged from his wife and children and living with a friend but an encounter with a stranger allows him to suddenly be 17 again (where he’s played by Zac Efron) and a chance to try and fix all that went wrong. It sounds heavy but it’s played for comedy.

  5. We share a pick on 13 Going on 30. How can anyone not like that film? It's so fun.

I usually think of Freaky Friday as a body switch film in its original and the 2 remakes (one of which was in the 90s that I'm sure many haven't seen).

OK, I think I'll need to watch Orphan as that I didn't know as I do remember the way it ended.

  7. Like you, I was pleasantly surprised by 13 Going on 30...better than I thought it would be. I haven’t seen Freaky Friday but want to one day and doubt I will see Orphan but now must know the connection:). I have been gone to Vancouver and the Rockies so fell behind as per norm but this time I had a great excuse:)
