Review: Lightyear

Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans) accidentally maroons his starship on a far away planet. After years of trying to return home, he encounters Zurg (James Brolin) and his army of robots that are about to make everything worse.

I haven't been to the theater in WEEKS. It's been frustrating, but thankfully I was able to find some time to catch a late night showing of this with my family. (My 10 year old thought seeing a movie at 9:30pm was very cool) If you've been around here for a while, you know I've been highly critical of all the Toy Story sequels. While I don't expect this to be a popular opinion, I think this is far better than any of the sequels that came before it.

Chris Evans is perfect for young Buzz. You could easily believe he was a younger (and hotter) Tim Allen and Kiki Palmer, Uzo Aduba, Peter Sohn, and Taika Waititi all round out a great voice cast. The majority of the jokes land, particularly one I loved about sandwiches. The most unintentionally funny thing about it was the title card that starts us off. It says that THIS is the movie Andy saw that made him a fan. Apparently this is the most progressive movie to ever exist in the 90's. I'm glad it is, and parents getting mad about a lesbian kiss and die mad about it, but as a kid who grew up in the 90's, it's just funny to think about.

It does lose a bit of steam towards the end and while the story isn't groundbreaking, it's a fun time. I could watch several more Buzz and Sox adventures. So is it for you? If you like the Toy Story universe, then of course! You should see this.

  1. I wish I liked this more. While not all the Toy Story sequels are fantastic, they are still more engaging than this one. That sandwich scene is perhaps one of the funniest bits, as well as all the scenes involving Sox, the scene stealer!

  2. I think I'll wait for this on Disney+ though I do think Chris Evans is a.... MASSIVE improvement over Tim Allen. I just don't think Tim Allen is funny at all.

BTW, have you seen the bloopers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and what do you think of Ryan Gosling as Ken? My reaction to Gosling as Ken was.... LMAO!!!!!!! He looks so stupid but it works.

    1. I haven't seen the bloopers yet! I need to look that up. Gosling looks amazingly corny. I can't wait.

  3. I will wait for TV for this one. I am not too much into this one. I always went to the movies o Tuesday nights but now they potentially have movies start at 10:30 or even later. I am falling asleep by 9 so I prefer going to the matinee. I read the com.ent about Ryan as Ken. He looks stupid and blank so he is perfe t as Ken:)
