2017 Golden Globe Winners

Right off the bat, The Globes let us know they were in fact, the Globes with an out of nowhere win. The highlight of the evening was Viola Davis' beautiful introduction of Meryl Streep, who was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award, then Meryl's glorious acceptance speech. She spoke about immigrents and press and went around and named several actors who were born in one place and grew up in another. Then she took a shot at Trump and didn't name him at all. It was amazing, and Meryl is pure class.

We were also provided with this years "Adele Dazeem" First, an interviewer on the red carpet called "Hidden Figures" "Hidden Fences" Then Michael Keaton called it that AGAIN when he was presenting. (People say he was joking, but how would he even know that happened?) Either way, so unintentionally hilarious (and sad) Twitter of course, jumped on it right away.

Probably a metaphor for the Hosts in Westworld

Jimmy Fallon was a terrible host. I was happy when he disappeared for a couple of hours, when he returned I had almost forgot he was hosting. Here is a list of the nominees, and the winners in blue. I went 16/25 with my picks.

Best Motion Picture -- Drama
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight
This is the only award Moonlight won today and that is some grade A bullshit. I hope the Oscars are kinder to them.

Best Director -- Motion Picture
Damien Chazelle -- La La Land
Tom Ford -- Nocturnal Animals
Mel Gibson -- Hacksaw Ridge
Barry Jenkins -- Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan -- Manchester by the Sea
I was hoping Barry Jenkins would win this. I'll be seeing La La Land tomorrow so for all I know my opinion could change, but I can't help but be happy for Chazelle. He looked pretty stunned.

Best Screenplay -- Motion Picture
Damien Chazelle -- La La Land
Tom Ford -- Nocturnal Animals
Barry Jenkins -- Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan -- Manchester by the Sea
Taylor Sheridan -- Hell or High Water
I got this one wrong, I thought Moonlight would win. (I thought that a lot tonight)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Drama
Denzel Washington -- Fences
Casey Affleck -- Manchester by the Sea
Joel Edgerton -- Loving
Andrew Garfield -- Hacksaw Ridge
Viggo Mortensen -- Captain Fantastic
I was really hoping Denzel would get enough momentum to knock Affleck, who has been the clear front runner all season off the spot, but alas, that didn't happen. Affleck is gross but I did agree with one thing he said...that Michelle Williams is perfect.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture -- Drama
Isabelle Huppert -- Elle
Natalie Portman -- Jackie
Ruth Negga -- Loving
Amy Adams -- Arrival
Jessica Chastain -- Miss Sloane
There go Natalie Portman's Oscar chances, I think. I still wish Amy would win.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Viola Davis -- Fences
Naomie Harris -- Moonlight
Nicole Kidman -- Lion
Octavia Spencer -- Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams -- Manchester by the Sea
I actually thought the Globes were going to be weird and go with Kidman here, but instead they got weird in Supporting actor. Viola, though I don't think she's necessarily supporting was amazing in Fences, so she deserves her win.

Dev Patel would make a sexy dad. I volunteer as tribute to help him achieve this.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture
Mahershala Ali -- Moonlight
Jeff Bridges -- Hell or High Water
Simon Helberg -- Florence Foster Jenkins
Dev Patel -- Lion
Aaron Taylor Johnson -- Nocturnal Animals
Nobody saw this coming. (heh) My twitter timeline was hilarious when his name was announced. Yes, I agree Ali was robbed, but i liked Johnson in Nocturnal Animals so I can't be too man. Ali is still winning that Oscar, Johnson won't even get a nomination. This win is still super weird though considering Nocturnal Animals didn't win anything else.

Best Motion Picture --Musical or Comedy

20th Century Women
Deadpool
Florence Foster Jenkins
La La Land
Sing Street
This was a no brainer, but one thing I noticed was that every time La La Land won, they kept hammering in the fact that making an original musical set in LA was such a huge risk. Yet Sing Street, also an original musical, though set in Ireland is there. I'm sure La La Land is probably made a bit better, but why is LA more buzzworthy than Ireland?

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
Colin Farrell -- The Lobster
Ryan Gosling -- La La Land
Hugh Grant -- Florence Foster Jenkins
Jonah Hill -- War Dogs
Ryan Reynolds -- Deadpool
I thought the Globes would give it to Reynolds, but don't worry about him. He got a piece of Andrew Garfield while Gosling was walking up there..

Deadpool x Spidey 4Eva

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
Annette Bening -- 20th Century Women
Lily Collins -- Rules Don't Apply
Hailee Steinfeld -- The Edge of Seventeen
Emma Stone -- La La Land
Meryl Streep -- Florence Foster Jenkins

Best Original Score -- Motion Picture
Moonlight (Nicholas Britell)
La La Land (Justin Hurwitz)
Arrival (Johann Johannson)
Lion (Dustin O'Halloran, Hauschka)
Hidden Figures (Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, Benjamin Wallfisch)

Best Original Song -- Motion Picture

"Can't Stop the Feeling" - Trolls
"City of Stars" - La La Land
"Faith"  -Sing
"Gold" - Gold
"How Far I'll Go" - Moana
Poor Lin-Manuel Miranda. La La Land is cockblocking is EGOT chances.

Best Animated Motion Picture

Kubo and the Two Strings
My Life as a Zucchini
Moana
Sing
Zootopia

Best Motion Picture Foreign Language

Divines
Elle
Neruda
The Salesman
Toni Erdmann

Best Television Series -- Drama
The Crown
Game of Thrones
Stranger Things
This is Us
Westworld
I figured they would go for This Is Us, but I forgot how much The HFPA love all things British.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series -- Drama
Caitriona Balfe -- Outlander
Claire Foy -- The Crown
Keri Russell -- The Americans
Winona Ryder -- Stranger Things
Evan Rachel Wood -- Westworld
I really wanted Evan to win this.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series -- Drama

Rami Malek -- Mr. Robot
Bob Odenkirk -- Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys -- The Americans
Liev Schreiber -- Ray Donovan
Billy Bob Thornton -- Goliath

Yaas, queen.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Support Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Olivia Colman, The Night Manager
Lena Headey -- Game of Thrones
Chrissy Metz -- This is Us
Mandy Moore -- This is Us
Thandie Newton -- Westworld
Thandie and Lena were robbed.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Sterling K. Brown -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Hugh Laurie -- The Night Manager
John Lightgow -- The Crown
Christian Slater -- Mr. Robot
John Travolta -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
American Crime
The Dresser
The Night Manager
The Night Of
The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Best Television Series -- Musical or Comedy
Atlanta
Black-Ish
Mozart in the Jungle
Transparent
Veep

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Felicity Huffman -- American Crime
Riley Keough -- The Girlfriend Experience
Sarah Paulson -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Charlotte Rampling -- London Spy
Kerry Washington -- Confirmation

The Stranger Things kids are sick of your Hiddleshit.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Riz Ahmed -- The Night Of
Bryan Cranston -- All the Way
John Turturro -- The Night Of
Tom Hiddleston -- Night Manager
Courtney B. Vance -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Now this was the most bullshit award of the night. HFPA really liked The Night Manager, but giving an award to this pompous fuck turned out to be an even bigger mistake than allowing Fallon to host. Hiddleston went into this long story about the children of Sudan and the conditions they live in, then he brought it around to how much they loved The Night Manager. The Orchestra never even attempted to play him off, yet Claire Foy barely got two words in before they sprang up the music on her. I didn't think it was possible for me to hate Hiddleston even more. I don't even want to see him as Loki in Ragnarok and I loved him in that role.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series -- Musical or Comedy
Anthony Anderson -- Black-ish
Gael Garcia Bernal -- Mozart in the Jungle
Donald Glover -- Atlanta
Nick Nolte -- Graves
Jeffrey Tambor -- Transparent

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series -- Musical or Comedy
Rachel Bloom -- My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Julia Louis-Dreyfus -- Veep
Sarah Jessica Parker -- Divorce
Gina Rodriguez -- Jane the Virgin
Tracee Ellis Ross -- Black-ish
Issa Rae -- Insecure

  1. Glad I'm not the only one who thought Fallon was terrible. While watching, I said to my wife "I kinda like Fallon, but sucks at this." As for the awards, I guess I'm going to have to see La La Land sooner, rather than later, since it won every damn thing. Meryl Streep and Viola Davis (love her win) were both great. Still, the highlight of the night for me was staring at Priyanka Chopra. Drool.

    1. OMG she was GORGEOUS in that gold dress!

I'm seeing La La Land tomorrow, I'm so excited.

  2. I'm so glad I didn't watch it as I spent much of time working on my Bowie 70 list and watch the new Bowie doc David Bowie: The Last Five Years. It was so good to see Meryl lay a major can of whoop-ass on our future President.

I'm not happy Evan lost. I was like.... BOO!!!! I was hoping Evan would do a superkick on whoever beat and then go, "Well, thanks to the fucking Foreign Press Association. I'm going home!" and then slams the award. Hiddles can just fuck off now. The stench of Swift is still on him.

Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield.... now that is a gorgeous couple.

    1. Ryan and Andrew - that was so randomly hilarious. I didn't actually see it on TV, Twitter had to point it out to me.

I'm super bummed about Evan. I haven't seen The Crown but COME ON. Evan was perfection in Westworld.

I need to see that Bowie doc

  3. I promise I will go back and read the rest of your post, but I lost my shit when I saw Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield kissing. What the hey is the back story there, and WHY don't the UK air this ceremony!!

  4. Great run-down. I thought it was a pretty good show. Agree Fallon was fairly forgettable after that opening number. I'm one of few who didn't care for Streep's speech. Maybe because after that election I have never been more sick of politics. LOVED Viola's win and was really rooting for Denzel. I also think Chazelle 110% deserves the Best Director win. The screenplay though...hmmm.

    1. I'm glad she got political because we need more people speaking out against Trump sp we don't get stuck with him for 8 years.

  5. I missed the ceremony because it was too late and I really needed to sleep, but I'm glad I didn't watch it. I watch the Fallon show on youtube, but Jimmy is a very awkward host, and I had the feeling he wouldn't do a good job.

I'll see La La Land only at the end of this month, but I already know I'm going to love so I was really happy when I saw in the morning how many awards it won. I was surprised by the dramatic actress. From what I read, I thought Portman was going to win. I also wanted Evan to win. She was beyond fantastic in Westworld.

    1. I saw La La Land today and I'm fine with all its wins except screenplay, it really doesn't deserve that.

  6. UGH "Hidden Fences" COME ON.

i actually didn't mind jimmy fallon.

Yeah, I hope Moonlight sweeps the Oscars
Barry Jenkins totally should have won
Still, Casey Affleck <<<<<< Denzel in Fences
I was hoping Ruth Negga would win. I HATE Elle
Nicole Kidman shouldn't be nominated at all.
Yeah, I was team Mahershala too, but Aaron was also great in Nocturnal Animals, so I wasn't so mad
I was hoping 20th Century Women would take it from La La Land (or even Deadpool)
Thandie and Mandy (lol, they rhyme) were robbed

    1. I hope other places give Denzel love over Affleck.

I really don't think Elle sounds like a good movie. I don't think I can watch something so rapey. lol

  7. Everyone was talking about the opening and when I saw it...it was a big, meh for me. Fallon was forgettable there. I did enjoy Steve Carrell and Kristin Wiig and found it quite funny. Goldie Hawn on the other hand, at first I thought it was kind of funny that she was being a ditz. I then thought maybe she is having early signs of dementia and then I wasn't laughing and felt bad for people, like me, who have parents who actually do suffer with dementia....not funny. Loved what Meryl Streep said even though I don't think politics should be part of the awards( I remember all the political stuff from the 1970's) but I did love what she said and it was perfect. Huddleston kept going on that I thought he was losing his point and then I thought, couldn't these kids watch something else aside from his show? Not relly surprised by much except I was waiting for all the Ta-ta's to pop out of their dresses. Maybe I'm getting old but I'm so bored with all the slit down to belly button dresses and can't some of these gals ever wear a necklace? Ok griping about fashion....sorry. Oh...this poor lass has a tough time reading the lime green lettering ..I can read it but it strains my eyes a bit. Now if you'll excuse me, I will have to cover myself in a blanket and sit in my rocking chair:)

    1. LOL it's okay to gripe about fashion, those plunging necklines aren't for everyone.

The Goldie Hawn thing was weird, I couldn't tell if it was a joke or if she was actually forgetting things. I ended up just feeling uncomfortable about it.

  8. I am HERE for La La Land sweeping awards season, but that screenplay win is kind of baffling when Moonlight (perfection on every level) and Manchester (not perfection, but a great screenplay) are right there, along with Arrival.

Best part of the ceremony BY FAR was Meryl's award, including the presentation by Viola Davis. A Queen honoring a Queen.

    1. Yeah if there's one thing La La Land certainly doesn't deserve it's screenplay. Come on. lol

  9. I literally never seen anyone who would soberly sabotage their own career like Hiddleston has been doing for the last year. It's stunning to witness.

  10. Yeah that Aaron Taylor Johnson win was crazy. I loved him in Nocturnal, but I didn't see that coming at all. I hope Ali's Oscar chances are still good!

    1. I think they will be. He's got SAG for sure, I'd say. BAFTA is up in the air now that ATJ has momentum.
