Golden Globe Predictions: Who Will Win, Who Should Win.

Now is the time of year to try to predict how the star power, freshman show loving HFPA will go! I never go back and look at who's winning what in the critics awards before I make these posts. One day I'll be that dedicated.

Best Motion Picture -- Drama
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight
Who will and should win: Moonlight.
Manchester by the Sea will put up a fight, but Moonlight is far better then any of these nominees that I've seen (Lion is the only one I haven't)

Best Director -- Motion Picture
Damien Chazelle -- La La Land
Tom Ford -- Nocturnal Animals
Mel Gibson -- Hacksaw Ridge
Barry Jenkins -- Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan -- Manchester by the Sea
Who will win: Damien Chazelle
Who should win: Barry Jenkins
I  haven't seen La La Land yet, but it still feels pretty unstopable. Chazelle should win here unless they really go star power and give it to Mel Gibson, which would just be weird. As you can tell by my blog header, I'm all about Moonlight winning all the awards.

Best Screenplay -- Motion Picture
Damien Chazelle -- La La Land
Tom Ford -- Nocturnal Animals
Barry Jenkins -- Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan -- Manchester by the Sea
Taylor Sheridan -- Hell or High Water
Who will and should win: Moonlight.
Admittedly, I'm not confident here. Moonlight feels the biggest gamble, which is why it should win. Manchester by the Sea shouldn't be here at all. Hell or High Water has no chance of winning even though it's a great movie.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Drama
Denzel Washington -- Fences
Casey Affleck -- Manchester by the Sea
Joel Edgerton -- Loving
Andrew Garfield -- Hacksaw Ridge
Viggo Mortensen -- Captain Fantastic
Who will win: Casey Affleck
Who should win: Pretty much anyone else.
I get it, Casey has this in the bag, which sucks because all he does is mope for over two hours. Edgerton and Mortensen were amazing in their movies. Garfield was very good too, and I haven't seen Fences as I type this.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture -- Drama
Isabelle Huppert -- Elle
Natalie Portman -- Jackie
Ruth Negga -- Loving
Amy Adams -- Arrival
Jessica Chastain -- Miss Sloane
Who will win: Isabelle Huppert
Who should win: Amy Adams, or Ruth Negga*
*I haven't seen Jackie yet, and Chastain has no chance. I think Adams is so overdue for an Oscar at this point I'd just love for her to gain some momentum. Negga was so brilliant in Loving too. Elle just looks so unappealing.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture
Viola Davis -- Fences
Naomie Harris -- Moonlight
Nicole Kidman -- Lion
Octavia Spencer -- Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams -- Manchester by the Sea
Who will win: Nicole Kidman
Who should win: ?
I've only seen Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight. Harris, I don't think should win. Williams is the best part about Manchester and I'd be happy with her win, but since I haven't seen the other films it's hard to compare. I think Kidman gets it on Star Power. I still wish more people talked about Dakota Fanning in American Pastoral.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture
Mahershala Ali -- Moonlight
Jeff Bridges -- Hell or High Water
Simon Helberg -- Florence Foster Jenkins
Dev Patel -- Lion
Aaron Taylor Johnson -- Nocturnal Animals
Who will and should win: Mahershala Ali
Ali is the front runner. I'd be happy with Patel winning just because I love the actor. I'd even be happy with Helberg and Taylor Johnson because they were great in their movies too. If Bridges wins, he should get up on stage and give his Globe to his costar Ben Foster.

Best Motion Picture --Musical or Comedy
20th Century Women
Deadpool
Florence Foster Jenkins
La La Land
Sing Street
Who will and should win: La La Land
Part me thinks the HFPA might actually be batty enough to give this to Deadpool. It would be "edgy." If La La Land weren't in this category, they would totally do it.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
Colin Farrell -- The Lobster
Ryan Gosling -- La La Land
Hugh Grant -- Florence Foster Jenkins
Jonah Hill -- War Dogs
Ryan Reynolds -- Deadpool
Who will win: Ryan Reynolds
Who should win: Collin Farrell.
Gosling won't win the Oscar so HFPA can be "cool" and "edgy" and award Reynolds here. I wish Farrell would win, they've awarded him in the past, but I think it's a long shot.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
Annette Bening -- 20th Century Women
Lily Collins -- Rules Don't Apply
Hailee Steinfeld -- The Edge of Seventeen
Emma Stone -- La La Land
Meryl Streep -- Florence Foster Jenkins
Who will and should win: Emma Stone
No one else is going to touch this.

Best Original Score -- Motion Picture
Moonlight (Nicholas Britell)
La La Land (Justin Hurwitz)
Arrival (Johann Johannson)
Lion (Dustin O'Halloran, Hauschka)
Hidden Figures (Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, Benjamin Wallfisch)
Who will win: La La Land
Who should win: Moonlight.
I LOVE Moonlight's score. I hate that Nocturnal Animals missed here. From what I hear Jackie's score is also amazing. Hidden Figures has some great names in it, so I think that has a good shot too, but ultimately I think this will be a big night for La La Land.

Best Original Song -- Motion Picture
"Can't Stop the Feeling" - Trolls
"City of Stars" - La La Land
"Faith"  -Sing
"Gold" - Gold
"How Far I'll Go" - Moana
Who will win: "Can't Stop the Feeling"
Who should win: "How Far I'll Go"
I saw Moana over a month ago and I still have that song stuck in my head. Justin Timberlake wrote the Trolls song though, so they'll probably give it to him.

Best Animated Motion Picture
Kubo and the Two Strings
My Life as a Zucchini
Moana
Sing
Zootopia
Who will and should win: Zootopia
First of all, Sing can get fucked. That movie was so terrible that I'm embarrassed for the HFPA for nominating it. Zootopia should rightfully ride this wave all the way to the Oscars.

Best Motion Picture Foreign Language
Divines
Elle
Neruda
The Salesman
Toni Erdmann
Who will win: Toni Erdmann or Elle
Who should win: ?
I haven't seen any of these, but Toni Erdmann is getting talked about the most, aside from the rapefest that is Elle. I suppose either of those could win.

Best Television Series -- Drama
The Crown
Game of Thrones
Stranger Things
This is Us
Westworld
Who will win: This is Us
Who should win: Westworld or Game of Thrones
This is tough, every single one of these noms aside from Game of Thrones is a freshman show, and the HFPA love those. Obviously, I think Westworld deserves it, but it might be too weird for them. The Crown and Stranger Things will put up a fight for it. HFPA have yet to award Game of Thrones, so I wouldn't count them out either, especially after all the Emmys they won this year. Ultimately, I think they'll go This Is Us as that's the most "for everyone" type of show here.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series -- Drama
Caitriona Balfe -- Outlander
Claire Foy -- The Crown
Keri Russell -- The Americans
Winona Ryder -- Stranger Things
Evan Rachel Wood -- Westworld
Who will win: Claire Foy
Who should win: Evan Rachel Wood
I think they will want to give The Crown something and it will narrowly miss for Best Drama Series, so Foy will probably win here. Wood should take it all, she deserves it.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series -- Drama
Rami Malek -- Mr. Robot
Bob Odenkirk -- Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys -- The Americans
Liev Schreiber -- Ray Donovan
Billy Bob Thornton -- Goliath
Who will win: Billy Bob Thornton
Who should win: Rami Malek
Rami didn't win last year, but he should've. Billy Bob is the newbie, so I'm going with him, even though of all the freshmen noms, he seems to be the weakest.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Support Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Olivia Colman, The Night Manager
Lena Headey -- Game of Thrones
Chrissy Metz -- This is Us
Mandy Moore -- This is Us
Thandie Newton -- Westworld
Who will win: Thandie Newton
Who should win: Thandie or Lena
Lena should have an Emmy  by now, but that's none of my business... I think Newton has the best shot here.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Sterling K. Brown -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Hugh Laurie -- The Night Manager
John Lightgow -- The Crown
Christian Slater -- Mr. Robot
John Travolta -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Who will and should win: Sterling K Brown
I see him repeating his Emmy win here.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
American Crime
The Dresser
The Night Manager
The Night Of
The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Who will win: The People vs OJ Simpson
Who should win: The Night Of
People vs OJ is such a powerhouse, I think it'll win here too. The Night Of was a wonderful series, I'd be happy if they won.

Best Television Series -- Musical or Comedy
Atlanta
Black-Ish
Mozart in the Jungle
Transparent
Veep
Who will win: Atlanta
Who should win: Veep
I have no idea why they put Transparent here, they don't have the same rules the Emmys do. They could stick this in drama where it belongs. Regardless, Atlanta is the new show so it'll win.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Felicity Huffman -- American Crime
Riley Keough -- The Girlfriend Experience
Sarah Paulson -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Charlotte Rampling -- London Spy
Kerry Washington -- Confirmation
Who will and should win: Sarah Paulson
Another that will keep her Emmy momentum.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Riz Ahmed -- The Night Of
Bryan Cranston -- All the Way
John Turturro -- The Night Of
Tom Hiddleston -- Night Manager
Courtney B. Vance -- The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Who will win: Courtney B Vance
Who should win Riz Ahmed
I think Riz has a good shot, but I like I said earlier, People vs OJ is a juggernaut.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made For Television
American Crime
The Dresser
The Night Manager
The Night Of
The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Who will win: The People vs OJ Simpson
Who should win: The Night Of.
Netflix really needs to stream People vs OJ so I can finally see what it's all about.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series -- Musical or Comedy
Anthony Anderson -- Black-ish
Gael Garcia Bernal -- Mozart in the Jungle
Donald Glover -- Atlanta
Nick Nolte -- Graves
Jeffrey Tambor -- Transparent
Who will win: Donald Glover
Who should win: ?
I love Glover. This is a hard category because I don't actually watch any of these.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series -- Musical or Comedy
Rachel Bloom -- My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Julia Louis-Dreyfus -- Veep
Sarah Jessica Parker -- Divorce
Gina Rodriguez -- Jane the Virgin
Tracee Ellis Ross -- Black-ish
Issa Rae -- Insecure
Who will win: Sarah Jessica Parker
Who should win: JLD, or from what I hear, Issa Rae.
I need to watch Insecure, that's on my list. I think SJP will take it. They've awarded her four times in the past. I think they'll be happy to have her back.

  1. Dude there is no way Davis loses supporting. SJW would burn the place down.

    1. The Globes are weird though. They rewarded Jennifer Lawrence over Lupita Nyong'o.

  2. not sure what world we're living in where folks thinks Casey's performance in Manchester by the Sea is better than Denzel's performance in Fences, or even Joel's performance in Loving. Like, no (and i typically like Casey's performances).

I would like Nocturnal Animals to win best screenplay.

I wasn't crazy about Amy's performance in Arrival, when it comes to deserving an Oscar.

Mahershala should absolutely win in that category. I love Dev, but he is NOT supporting. He is the lead.

Honestly, Annette should win over Emma. Her performance was more technically difficult and nuanced.

I hate Elle SO MUCH. A Neruda win would be great.

Sterling K. Brown and Sarah Paulson for ALL THE PRIZES.

I would love to see either The Night Of or the OJ series win, because I know it would have gone to an amazing series either way.

Have you seen Mozart in the Jungle? I tried to get into it, but couldn't (and I love Gael).

I would be kinda stunned if SJP wins, not because I don't like her on the show. But because I don't know anyone else who does. I think Issa should win (she's great)!

    1. I haven't seen Mozart because I don't have Amazon Prime, but I love Gael too.

I can't with Manchester by the Sea..I just can't,what movie did everyone else see? Lol

  3. I have a feeling you love Moonlight:) I have heard of the films but haven't seen any which is typical. I really want to see La-La Land and will. These films all sound good and we always know some should have won when they didn't and vice versa. I have seen This is Us and liked it but now I have missed quite a few. As for the other tv shows....no clue since almost all are on channels I don't get.

    1. Moonlight is amazing. Arrival is my favorite awards film this year but it's not catching on like Moonlight.

  4. To be honest I'm to up in the air to even attempt to guess who will win. Moonlight feels like the film that is going to win this year for a variety of reasons. But I adore La La Land and feel it is an incredible achievement. I would love to see it rewarded as such. I feel Chazelle has made something special.

I also can't imagine a performance better than what I saw from Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. They were electrifying and were on an entirely different level. Pure brilliance.

As for other nominees, I still don't care for Zootopia. Its second half took it down for me. I still think it will win though. Watch out for The Salesman in the Best Foreign Language category. I haven't seen it (desperately want to but these stupid release schedules) but Farhadi makes tremendous movies that Oscar notices.

    1. I was supposed to see Fences today but there's a blizzard, so I missed out. I'm so annoyed. Foreign Language is always so hard to gauge for me because I rarely get to see the films before the Oscars.

  5. I can't believe I didn't realise until now that Nocturnal Animals was snubbed for score! Outrage!

The Globes are sneaking up on me this year so I'm going to trust your judgement on a lot of these picks ;)

    1. lol I don't know if that's a good idea, but I'll roll with it!

Nocturnal Animals not being in score sucks so much.

  6. I think anyone has a shot at best screenplay. La La Land astonishes me with how well written it is, for something that probably didn't have to be. Hell or High Water probably does not stand a chance .

I am totally cool with Casey getting the award here. I loved what he did. I don't love him as a person though. Yikes.

I think Natalie Portman should get this. She's phenomenal in Jackie.

Viola seems likely for supporting, but I think that's category fraud. I see a lot of trhat here.

I like Ali for supporting. Neither Bridges nor Patel really seems supporting in theirs. Pretty meaty roles. Taylor-Johnson shouldn't be there. Should have been Michael Shannon instead.

If Ryan Reynolds wins, I'll likely stop watching. Ugh.

I like the Moana song too. Kubo would have my vote for best animated.

    1. Yeah, Casey Affleck's sexual assault allegations are interesting in the way they aren't being covered well in the media. Especially after how much Nate Parker's were.

  7. Viola Davis will take supporting actress here and at Oscar. I have almost no doubt. Unless Oscar actually puts her in Leading Actress.

Casey Affleck will and should win. He has been one of the most consistently underrated actors around for years (see: Gerry, Assassination of Jesse James, now Manchester by the Sea). He was right to play it "mopey" if that's what you want to call it. That's the role. The most tortured a man could possibly be. He nailed every single nuance of the malaise, the awkwardness, the pain that hangs over a grieving soul. So good.

    1. Affleck has given far better performances than Manchester though. Being mopey for 2+ hours isn't great compared to what he's capable of doing.

  8. I have not yet seen Moonlight or Hell or High Water, and those may still turn up to be major surprises. La La Land has a lock in score and best song category. I hope Winona Ryder wins for Stranger Things
