My Top 10 Films of 2016 and 10 Worst

I'm always running late with these yearly Top 10 lists because I'm always trying to play catch up with some of the big awards contenders. Before this list is published, I didn't get to see Lion, a film I've had on my Must See list for a while. But it was hard enough choosing just 10 to begin with. I ended up with a "just missed" category because I kept rotating films.  Here are my Top 10 films of 2016, and the 10 worst.

Top 10 Films of 2016
This was everything I wanted from I wanted from the MCU.

The ending of this elevates it from a great movie to a phenomenal one.

I can't remember the last time I was so angry at a film ending. I wasn't ready to leave Chiron.

This severely underrated comedy had so much heart.

I love this thriller and I think it will go down as one of Anton Yelchin's best films.

An amazing performance by the criminally underrated Rebecca Hall, and a very good piece on mental illness.

This movie has so many twists and turns but it never once becomes "too much"

Beautifully scored. What Natalie Portman does in this movie is nothing short of incredible.

Inspiring and superbly acted, the cinematic version of "yaass queens."

Stunning to look at with beautiful songs.

Just missed

Jeff Nichols can do no wrong. Everything he directs is wonderful, and I especially like his report with Michael Shannon.

Can a film be beautiful, yet ugly? That's what this is. Gorgeous to look at when it wasn't one of the most uncomfortable scenes I've seen in a long time.

Allison Janney, Ellen Page, and Tammy Blanchard are wonderful in this little Netflix indie.

Honorable Mention: Fences, Loving, Swiss Army Man, Hell or High Water, The Lobster, Star Trek Beyond, Snowden, Don't Breathe, Hush, Zootopia, Rogue One, A Man Called Ove

And now for the 10 Worst Films of 2016. Mind you, if a movie looks bad, I skip it. These are films that I actually thought had promise when I went to watch them, and they turned out to be terrible...except for Gods of Egypt, I knew that was going to be bad before watching it on HBO. I normally only do a "bottom 5" list, but I saw enough this year to make 10 out of them.

1) Suicide Squad - This had the most potential and they wasted it with a terrible Joker and so many incoherent story choices.
2) Hail, Caesar - Why did everyone but me like this movie? It was so boring.
3) Into The Forest - A movie so bad that they managed to make two of my favorite actresses, Evan Rachel Wood and Ellen Page bad performances.
4) Regression - Emma Watson CAN'T ACT. Why do I keep giving her chances?
5) Sausage Party - Zero laughs.
6) The Bronze - Another film with zero laughs and a terrible lead.
7) Sing - The worst animated film I saw this year.
8) Hello My Name Is Doris - Predictable, and not the good kind.
9) Gods of Egypt - LOL
10) Batman v Superman - Holy shit, DCEU, if you want to compete with Marvel, you need to be better. I give credit for Wonder Woman though. She was awesome. And that Flash cameo.

  1. Love your gifs! There are too many in that best of list that I haven't seen yet, but I'm getting there slowly :)
I forgot all about Hello My Name Is Doris! I did a lot of cringing whilst watching that movie...

    1. I feel like Doris was supposed to be empowering but the whole thing just came off as extremely ageist.

  2. I was going to see Haindmaiden but it's 10 pm, and it's time to see Ed Harris movie and go to bed so hopefully I'll see it tomorrow, looks good!

    2. I think you should be careful what you wish for with me and 2016 movies lol

    3. I think there's a lot you would appreciate in The Handmaiden though! lol

  3. No, not "Hail, Caesar!"!!!! AAArggghhhh!

Ahem, okay...I LOVE what you said about "Arrival". That comment is spot-on. Same with "Christine". Criminal indeed. And I'm really glad to see "Wilderpeople" get some appreciation. Easily one of the best comedies of the year.

    1. lol Sorry, I know disliking hail, Caesar isn't popular. I'm glad you like Christine as much as I do.

  4. I really liked Hail Caesar but I think, unless you know all the detailed history about movies back in the day, you would find it boring. I found it great with all the in jokes but you need to know all the history. I usually catch up on all the great movies after the Oscars which is a bummer. I did enjoy the Civil war film-not the actual civil war but the marvel one:) It was very well done. I don't care a hoot about Doris and may catch one day on TV. The batman vs superman flick was pretty bad-I felt like they needed to a time out and in the corner. the one bright spot was Wonder woman with that great music behind her

    1. Even knowing the history of studio lots couldn't save Hail, Caesar from being a boring piece of shit. lol

Yes, Wonder Woman's music is awesome!

  5. What a beautiful post! So great. I'll put mine together soon enough.

I love to see Jackie on your list. It will make mine as well. My biggest regret here is The Handmaiden. It ran for like a month at the indie place here, and I never got to it.

Not a fan of Civil War, but I just don't do superhero movies very well. Never been a fan. Glad it worked for so many people.

As for your worst, Hail Caesar! was hilarious. I think about it every single day still and it's been almost a year. "Would that it were so simple" to describe why... And, I agree, Hello, My Name is Doris is garbage.

    1. "What that it were so simple" was legit the only time I laughed in Hail, Caesar. I wanted to nod off every time Josh Brolin was on screen.

The Handmaiden played at my indie theater for a week. I was lucky to see it. I'm guessing the NC-17 rating didn't win over many in my town lol.

  6. I have a lot of movies in your top 10 and just missed to catch up on! I can't stop thinking about the ending of Arrival, it really elevated the film.

  8. I've seen 4 of your top 10 and 6 of your Honorable Mentions. I love them all, except Star Trek Beyond, which I thought was meh.

I getting desperate to see The Handmaiden. Must see that very soon.

I have to cop to actually liking...and laughing at...Sausage Party. I'm sorry, couldn't help myself.

  9. Solid list. Thrilled to see Green Room on there as it will also be on my list! I still need to see Hidden Figures and Christine!!

Your worst list needs to include Birth of a Nation, the movie I was called a racist for bc of my negative opinion of it ;)

    1. I actually had The Birth of a Nation on there until I saw Sausage Party, then I had to boot it. lol In retrospect, I probably should've kept it on there and removed BvS.

  10. Can't disagree with any of the films you selected for the top 10, like all of the films you selected. Though I haven't seen Hidden Figures becauase it has yet to be released in the UK.

Gods of Eygpt is in my worst list as well...such a crap film

    1. I clearly wasn't paying enough attention in the first 5 or so minutes because I was like "why the fuck is so much taller than everyone else?!" Whoops. lol

  11. LOVE this Top Ten. The only one I haven't seen is Green Room. I think Christine is uneven outside of Rebecca Hall's performance, but WOW what a performance. The fact that she got no awards love for it is CRIMINAL. I felt so let down by Civil War. I went in wanting to love it and it was all mopey and serious - Marvel's most DC film yet lol. BRING BACK JOSS! (but also don't so he can work on other better original stuff! LOL)

I'm holding out on posting mine at least until I see Lion, the only BP nominee I haven't seen, which will happen within a week. There are a couple others I want to see too, but I don't want to post it too late lol. I will say though, that 4 of your Top 10 are also in mine, and they ain't going anywhere!

    1. I really like the Russo brothers and you could tell Joss was 100% done during the Age of Ultron press tour, I'm okay with the Russos doing it now lol.

I really want to see Lion but my theater hasn't gotten it yet. I actually made a plea to my local indie theater's website to get it and they said they're trying to. lol

  12. Great list! I still have to see a few on the top ten but they all sound amazing (Moonlight, Green Room, The Hand Maiden). Hope you enjoy Lion! :)

  13. Awesome list. Moonlight, Arrival and Green Room would make my final 10 too. But a little disappointed to see Hail, Caesar! on the other end of the spectrum. I thought it was a real delight.

  14. Your worst list is pretty spot-on, save Hail, Caesar, which I quite enjoyed. However, I have sold my soul to the Coen Brothers!

Excited to see Talulah mentioned, here, as it has been sitting in my Netflix queue. I haven't heard much about it, but I love me some Allison Janney. Overall, great list! At least 3 of your 10 will pop up in my list.

    1. Oh man, Tallulah is great! I really hope you like it. It was in my Top 10 until I saw Christine. lol
