Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Revivals and Reboots

There's no shortage of TV revivals and reboots lately, which is wonderful because that's what we're talking about this week at Wandering Through The Shelves. I feel like opinions over revivals are all over the place, at least that's how it is for me. Sometimes I'm deeply embarrassed, sometimes I'm surprised. Here's what I came up with.

1) The X-Files

This is the only TV revival that I was actually excited about and while some of the episodes were good it was mostly a disappointment. The weirdest part was me coming to terms with the fact that I may have had a crush on Walter Skinner this entire time. I swear it was that episode where he fucked that hooker and I had to ask someone what that was all about when it first aired because I didn't get it. You're welcome to leave me contact info for therapists in the comment section.

2) DuckTales

This is something I watch with my son, it was really hard to get into the voice actors, because old school Duck Tales they are so young, and here they talk like teenagers. I love Beck Bennett's Launchpad. This turned out a lot better than I thought.

3) The Clone Wars

So this one hasn't happened yet, we have to wait for Disney+, but I'm looking forward to it. I'm the first to admit that I shit all over The Clone Wars when it first aired, but it got so much better in the later seasons. I grew to appreciate it even more after watching Star Wars Rebels and seeing what Ahsoka, the character that drove me insane at first grew into.

  1. Yikes I've seen none of these! Not even X-Files, I think I saw two episodes but it just wasn't my thing. The other two are animated, need I say more.

I went with three where I loved the original show and liked two of the redos.

Hawaii Five-O (1968-1980/2010-?)-The elite branch of Hawaii’s police force…the Five-O…headed by Steve McGarret (Jack Lord), his faithful assistant Danny Williams (Dan-O) (James MacArthur) and their squad fought crime on the big island for 12 years kicked off by propulsive classic opening music. In 2010 the concept was updated but kept basically the same with Alex O’Loughlin & Scott Caan taking over for Lord and MacArthur and is still running today.

Dallas (1978-1991/2012-2014)-Life in the oil business and Southfork ranch specifically centered on the Ewing clan headed by Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes) & Jock (Jim Davis), their sons-the ruthless J.R. (Larry Hagman) and good guy Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and their wives Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) and Pamela (Victoria Principal) as their spar and manipulate everyone and each other for 13 incredibly successful years. In 2012 a new version premiered following J.R. & Bobby’s sons John Ross and Christopher (Josh Henderson & Jesse Metcalfe) as they wheedled and cajoled like their Pappies. Not nearly as successful it only lasted two years but was a decent redo.

The Odd Couple (1970-1975/2015-2017)-In 1970, two years after the successful Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau theatrical film, Tony Randall and Jack Klugman premiered as neat freak Felix Unger and major slob Oscar Madison who tried to live together without killing each other when they separate from their wives. They did so humorously for five years. In 2015 a new version premiered with Thomas Lennon as Felix and Matthew Perry as Oscar which limped along for two years. The difference was Lennon & Perry were talented actors playing parts whereas Randall & Klugman were ideal fits who were perfection in the roles, better even than Lemmon and Matthau in the original film.

    1. Your picks are all really popular and yet I've never seen them. I suppose I saw a few Odd Couple episodes. I'm surprised Hawaii 5-0 is still going.

  2. I love the X-Files and I also had a crush on Skinner but I don't remember him giving the hoo-ha to the hooker. Was that in the remake?? I hated the fact that they brought Cigarette smoking man back as I wanted him to finally die. I have never watched the animated shows so they are out for me

    1. No that was in the original series because I didn't understand at the time what was going on lol.

  3. I liked the reboot of DuckTales as I liked the changes they made in some of the characters. Including Webby as in the original, she was a girly-girl that wanted to hang with the boys and such. In the reboot, she is just wild and fun and I loved that. I also loved the fact that Mrs. Beakley is now a former spy. Even adding Donald and Della into the mix is fun.

    1. Yes! I really like Webby in this. She's very spunky whereas I felt like she was only like that before in the Lost Lamp movie.

  5. I still wanted to watch the Ducktales reboot, especially after hearing so many good things about it. But I never had the time to! I better start making some time soon!

  6. I have never watched any of these shows, even though I am sure I would love The X-Files. It looks like the kind of series that I enjoy. I also really want to check out ‘DuckTales’. It seems fun for kids.

    1. I definitely recommend starting the original X-Files and not the reboot. lol

  7. You're not alone about Skinner. I don't know what it was about him, probably the actor, but he was kinda hot. We can go to therapy together. lol The X-Files is one of the most disappointing revivals ever. I can't believe I binge-watched the whole series before S10. As usual Chris Carter refused to have an endgame for the characters/story, and that killed the momentum. Bless Gillian for clarifying that she didn't want to do it forever.

    1. Oh thank God it's not just me. lol. I should've pointed that out about Carter, he's an annoying showrunner in that regard. Everything needs to end, how hard is it to write an actual ending?

  8. I've watched the original X-Files but not the later seasons, where did I stop, I don't even know which is why I still haven't seen the revival.

I used to watch Duck Tales as a kid. Not much for cartoons anymore.

    1. X Files is one where you can at least pick up anywhere and not be lost. Unless you're looking for the Lone Gunmen, I guess.
