Review: The Lodge

Quit screwing around.

Richard (Richard Armitage) is a divorcee who is trying to integrate his new fiancee, Grace (Riley Keough) into his life. She has a very tragic past, and his two children, Aiden (Jaeden Martell - formerly Lieberher, I have no idea when he changed this) and Mia (Lia McHugh) are not keen on entertaining the thought of her being in their lives. Richard decides to drive them up to a secluded cabin on a mountain for Christmas in hopes this will all bring them together.

The Lodge sets us up with the hefty task of suspending our disbelief that Richard is in fact, not a moron. Even though leaving his kids with his fiancee, that they hate, stranded in the middle of nowhere without a car on top of a bunch of other factors that I will not spoil is completely moronic. Fine. What's next?

Well, quite the slow burn. The Lodge does a really good job of building tension. While it's slow, it's not slow enough to be boring and even though it heavily foreshadows the conclusion, it does keep you guessing whether or not you have put together all the pieces. It's frequent use of doll houses gives me major Hereditary vibes, even though this screenplay was technically around first. I think that works in this film's favor though, because we all know how that movie ended. Maybe this will be similar.

I'm torn on this film. Keough is fantastic and her backstory had potential to be an entire movie itself, but they never go into it. The overall feel of is tense and perfect, but it is just so implausibly stupid. The ending isn't a huge surprise, it's practically spelled out for you, but the film does keep you guessing on whether or not there's more to it...but there isn't. You'll leave the movie thinking (highlight for spoiler)

    I do like Riley Keough but I'm not sure about this as I heard it's about a bunch of kids just screwing around and pissing off the adult.

    I thought it was creepy enough, which is what I was looking for...but the setup really undercuts the flicks overall effectiveness.

    That said, I was on edge. Really couldn't trust anyone (except the dog), and I was cool with that (except Dad).

      It was definitely creepy and I enjoyed that it legitimately kept me guessing throughout, it's just when you get there and the most obvious thing IS the answer, the stupidity of it kind of ruins it.

Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) has quietly been trying to make a difference as The Batman in Gotham. He can't be everywhere. He works closely with Lt Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and they face a puzzling crime by a masked murderer going by The Riddler. Thursday Movie Picks: Wedding Movies

How fitting that Wandering Through The Shelves has us start the month of June with movies about weddings. June brides are a thing, right? At least that's what people kept telling me when I got married in June. I just picked it because it was warm. To be honest, I don't like many wedding movies, so this was kind of tough, but here's a few I can tolerate. 1) Wedding Crashers This is one of my favorite comedies until the last 20 minutes or so when it falls flat on its face. But it's so hilarious and quotable before all of that, I can forgive it. Lock it up. 2) Rachel Getting Married I used this one for a pick last year but it's easily my favorite movie involving a wedding. The acting is fantastic. I 3) Corpse Bride Truth be told, I wasn't crazy about Corpse Bride, but like I said. Slim pickings in the wedding movie world for me. I'd watch this over a "classic" like My Best Friend's Wedding or Runaway Bride any day.  click th

Random Ramblings: The Radio Flyer Conundrum

Recently, I was talking to someone about who I thought were the best child actors when I was also a child.  Two that really stood out to me were Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello, and one film those two were in together was called Radio Flyer.  Then I was reminded about the uniqueness of this film. Instead of reviewing the film, I wanted to have an open discussion about the ending. It deals with a tough issue; child abuse. What I’ve noticed is the way that the film ends is interpreted many different ways, and the filmmakers never came forward to say what was right and wrong. I’m interested in hearing everyone’s opinions on it. How did you interpret the ending? Obviously spoiler alerts will follow..
