Thursday Movie Picks: Seven Deadly Sins - Envy

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is our jealous deadly sin - Envy. This was one of the easier ones for me with this Seven Deadly Sins theme. Here are three films I enjoy.

1) The Talented Mr. Ripley

I recently re-watched this again and if you can get past how awful Gwenyth Paltrow is in it, everything else is pretty damn good. Is there anyone more envious and smarmy than Tom Ripley?

2) In Her Skin

This little Australian film is about a teenager who is so obsessed with her "perfect" neighbor that she kidnaps and murders her. I thought this was a very powerful film (casting people who obviously aren't teenagers aside) and it's based on a true story that I wasn't familiar with until I watched it.

3) Black Swan

Nina envying Beth, then Lily is a big part of what torments her. Whenever I talk about this film I immediately want to go watch it again. It's just so wonderful.

  1. I was so close in choosing The Talented Mr. Ripley which is played so well by Matt Damon. He is just so, so icky. I don’t know your 2nd choice but it sounds good especially that it’s based on a true story. I despised Black Swan. Psycho Swan is just irritating

    1. It still blows my mind a bit that the murder in In Her Skin was so graphic when I assume her family knew this film was being made.

  2. Great choices here! Black Swan is still so damn good. I miss when Aronofsky made movies like this

  3. I agree about both Ripley and Paltrow in it. So glad she's more or less given up acting, though the horribly irresponsible GOOP path she's pushing makes my blood boil! Such a shame her mother is SO talented.

I've heard of In Her Skin but have put it off since it looks disturbing.

I appreciated Black Swan as a good film when I saw it and the performances knocked me out but I've felt no desire to watch it again since.

We match in a roundabout way on our first picks!

Purple Noon (1960)-Tom Ripley (Alain Delon) travels to Europe to visit his friend, wealthy layabout Phillipe Greenleaf (Maurice Ronet) and his fiancée Marge (Marie Lafort). What Phillipe doesn’t know is that Tom is being paid by Phillipe's father to persuade his son to return home. Arriving in Italy he insinuates himself into their lives but when he is unsuccessful in his mission the father cuts him off. Seeing the lifestyle the pair lead Tom becomes consumed with envy as well as lust for Phillipe which he’s willing to acquire by any means he deems necessary. The basis for Matt Damon’s The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Amadeus (1984)-Child prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) is a vastly talented composer with the ability to create masterworks with little to no effort but also an immature undisciplined hedonist. He incurs the enmity of Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) who though he is the Viennese court composer is a middling talent. Consumed with envy Salieri becomes obsessed with Mozart's downfall but his schemes lead to dire consequences for both men. Loaded with great music, set design and performances both men were Oscar nominated with Abraham winning the statue.

Single White Female (1992)-Having just broken her engagement from fiancé Sam (Steven Weber) Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) advertises for a new roommate when Sam moves out. Mousy Hedra “Hedy” Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh) answers the ad, moves in and the young women quickly form a bond. But Allison doesn’t realize that Hedy is unstable and envious of her life which she slowly starts to imitate. When Allison begins to reconsider her engagement Hedy’s grip on reality slips away and Allison has the fight of her life on her hands.

    1. Goop showing up in Endgame was so unfortunate. lol I hate that she plays Pepper, who is actually a good character otherwise.

I haven't seen any of your picks this week. I've seen parts of Single White Female and I keep telling myself I need to finish it one day. It'll happen eventually.

  4. I only watched Black Swan for the first time this year and I wish it hadn't taken me so long! It's the PERFECT choice for this theme <3

  5. I still haven't seen The Talented Mr. Ripley while I totally agree with you on Gwyneth and her disgusting goop though she has her moments as an actress.

I saw some of In Her Skin which was quite fucked up. Black Swan of course is fucking awesome.
