Thursday Movie Picks - Seven Deadly Sins: Sloth

I've been finding it hard to talk about movies this week with everything going on, but I've had this post written up for over a month now and I'm going to try to get back on track. Movies are my happy place, after all.

It's another Seven Deadly Sins edition at Wandering Through The Shelves and this week we're talking about Sloth. I love how challenging this series has been, and I know I say this every time..but this one was really tough! I know "Sloth" is more than just laziness but here's what I could come up with in a category that was stumping me.

1) Avengers: Endgame

How does this action packed film end up in the sloth category? Well, for good ol' Thor. I'll admit, when I read the spoilers prior to seeing the film about Fat Thor I was terrified because how dare you do that to beautiful Chris Hemsworth, but Thor completely letting himself go to video game and beer is pretty slothy.

2) The Big Lebowski

The film where Thor probably got his inspiration from, The Dude is the epitome of Sloth. It took someone ruining his rug of all things to get motivated

3) Shaun of the Dead

Nick Frost's Ed is a master slacker, though he does sort of step it up once the zombie apocalypse hits.

  1. I feel bad for Thor for getting fat and it's all because he killed Thanos and it was for nothing. He lost big time and felt that it was his fault for what happened. So he sank into severe depression, became a fat alcoholic with serious issues. It was Rocket and Hulk that got him out and a pep talk from his mom to get him back. Hopefully in the next film, we see him get back in shape but also do some crying as I'm sure he's got a lot of things he need to get out and needs to cry about.

The Dude... all he ever wanted was his rug back.

Ed is a slacker but a cool one.

    1. I have a feeling the next time we see him he'll be in crazy good shape just to rub it into Star Lord. How can you not write that?

    2. In Thor: Love and Thunder, it's likely that when he gets back in shape. Everyone in the Guardians will like him and make Quail jealous to the point that Thor leaves the Guardians to do his own thing and in the end of the film via post-credit sequence. Thor returns to the annoyance of Quill and says, "oh, by the way. I'm bringing someone else along for the ride" Quill is upset and it's Jane aka Lady Thor as she is immediately liked by Nebula and Mantis and messes up Quill's mixtape as she puts in some hip-hop because she's Jane. Everyone in the Guardians like her while Quill is upset that he still can't find Gamora and Thor says "there there Quail, we'll find Gamora and we can all have a good time"

  2. Ah, such good picks! What does it say about me that these are three of my favorite characters of all time? Nothing good, I suppose.

Your first two are so iconic, but you can't sleep on Ed either, you know?

    1. Definitely not, although I'm still somewhat offended that they took Chris Hemsworth's beautiful body and stuck it under a fat suit. The nerve.

  3. I've certainly heard of the other two but the only one I've seen is The Big Lebowski. I thought of it too but even though Jeff Bridges did a great job with the Dude I wasn't crazy about the film.

I'm suffering from Avengers burnout and Shaun of the Dead just doesn't look like my deal.

I'm glad to hear I wasn't alone in finding this week a really tough one!! I almost gave up but then I thought of one of the ultimate slothful people-Rip Van Winkle-and with a little research was able to build a theme within a theme by going wwwaaayyy back.

Rip Van Winkle (1896)-A series of shorts pieced together that tell the Washington Irving tale of layabout Rip Van Winkle (Joseph Jefferson-a star of the stage before during and after the Civil War who spent his later career touring endlessly in this play) who ambles into the Catskills and wakes up 20 years later having slept through the American Revolution! The narrative is choppy but how many films survive from before the turn of the last century?

The Legend of Rip Van Winkle (1905)-Another short-14 minutes. Probably the most innovative version of the Irving classic taking into account the age of the film and what it sets out to do. French film pioneer Georges Méliès (who also plays the lead) uses movable sets and color to set the scene though without title cards it's hard to follow if you're not familiar with the story.

Rip Van Winkle (1914)-This version at 58 minutes follows the story after Rip (played by Thomas Jefferson-son of Joseph Jefferson) awakens from his slumber and reacquaints himself with the world that passed him by include getting to know his daughter Meenie (played by Jefferson’s wife Daisy Jefferson) as well.

    1. I don't think I've watched a movie as old as your first pick. I like the direction you took this theme. I'll have to look into these.

    2. I found the father/son Jefferson ones on YouTube and the French on Daily Motion. I just watched all three within the last few days! They were a lifesaver though I was really stuck.

  4. Great picks! I'm hating myself so much right now for not thinking about Thor in Endgame.

  7. Another blogger mentioned Thor in my comments and that is a brilliant choice. I have only a part of the Big Lebowski and I have not see Sean of t(e Dead yet but I want to

  8. Still haven't seen Endgame. But I guess it's sort of funny since Ragnarok pretty much had the look of a retro video game and now he's the dude playing video games.
