Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Home and Lifestyle Shows
It's another TV theme over at Wandering Through The Shelves and this week we're talking about home/lifestyle shows! When I moved to my current city 10 years ago, I didn't know many people. I moved in the dead of winter, I worked from home and had a new baby so I ended up spending a lot of time with HGTV. Today is a good week to revisit the shows I constantly consumed back then.
1) House Hunters - Yes, I know this show is staged, but I don't care. I love looking at houses. I also love the memes that come from this show and some of the crazy budgets. One of my favorite Youtube channels, Quality Culture just did a video on House Hunters and I agree with her 100%.
2) The Property Brothers - Ahh, those twins. They're charismatic and now have about 10 other shows besides this one. I liked this one because they actually talked about contingencies which is something my 3rd pick NEVER did. I always wonder about what the rest of the house looked liked though. They redid three rooms and just left the rest looking all raggedy?
3) Love It or List It - I don't know why I was so into this show because I cannot fucking stand it now. Hilary never seems to plan for the problems that happen to her EVERY time and no one ever gets what they want. The housing market in Canada is also crazy depressing. How do people afford these places?
Much to my wife's chagrin, I call shows like House Hunters "Assholes Buying Houses." Seriously, to afford these places, are these people arms dealers?
ReplyDeleteOh I know! Like, what line of work should I have chosen?
DeleteYou are so right about Love It or List It. The couple are always shown one under budget, one at budget and one over which is what they choose if they don't stay where they are I also wonder what the rest of the house looks like.
ReplyDeleteThe market is crazy here. A small war time home that went for $150,000 8 yrs ago now goes for $480,000. It's ridiculous and it will bottom out no one can truly afford these places. I have clients o homes with mortgage payments of $1,500/mth hydro gas, cable, water run over $500/mth and they all want the big ass vehicles so they pay between $500 to $750+ per month and now our gas is $1.95 A litter which, I think, is over $8.00 a gallon.
I just don't understand why Hilary doesn't budget for wiring! Knob and tube wiring fucks her so much she should automatically dedicate 20k of every budget to it.
DeleteI'll watch these type of shows on occasion but never week to week my brother-in-law however is crazy for them. I've seen a few episodes of both of the first two and I like the Property Brothers.
ReplyDeleteYears ago now I did watch This Old House with some frequency and it was the only thing other than the PB's that occurred to me.
My problem with the shows now is that they all feel very, very staged. There's also the fact that a lot of the time when the redecorators are rhapsodizing over the marvelous job they've done I can't help thinking that they've taken a comfortable home and turned it into a sterile showroom that looks like a hospital reception area!
I remember This Old House! I always wonder how much of the stuff they take away after they stage it? It probably looks like a baron wasteland when they're done.
DeleteI have never seen any of these shows and I don't want to. They all look like shit. This is why I skipped this category as I'm not into these shows.
ReplyDeleteHGTV is certainly an acquired taste lol
DeleteI saw quite a lot of these several years back too but don't really like them now.
ReplyDeleteWhen I used to watch House Hunters it was most interesting to see how relatively okay the prices were in terms of how much space there was. I live in a land scarce place so property prices are expensive. A public housing (subsidized) apartment of about 1000 square feet would cost at least 200 000 USD while a private condo of the same size would cost 580 000 USD. Meanwhile houses that are the typical houses you'd see on House Hunter with a driveway, garage, front and backyard would cost millions...basically anything landed will be in the millions.
It's crazy to see how different housing markets can be. It's depressing.
DeleteMy mum absolutely loves shows like this, so the only episodes I've ever seen were with her.. I'm trying to remember if any of your particular picks were among that. 😅
ReplyDeleteThey're on ALLLLL the time. lol
