2015 Academy Award Winners + my thoughts

This felt like the longest Oscar cast ever. Neil Patrick Harris was a shit host, I'm sorry. He's a great singer and showman but when he's not singing he's awkward as hell. The strongest part of this telecast were the Best Original Song performances. "Everything is Awesome" was the highlight of the night. "Lost Stars" is always a beautiful song to hear. Rita Ora has one hell of a voice, and the performance of "Glory" was very moving. Another great part about tonight? BIRDMAN!! Oh that makes me happy. I'm totally fine with not winning that annual pass to my movie theater for correctly predicting the Oscar winners.

The winners are in blue, my thoughts follow in green.

Best Picture
American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash
Sean Penn took way to damn long to announce the winner, but it was perfect when he finally did.

Best Director
Alexandro G. Iñárritu - Birdman
Richard Linklater - Boyhood
Bennett Miller - Foxcatcher
Wes Anderson - The Grand Budapest Hotel
Morten Tyldum - The Imitation Game
This made me so happy. I was worried Linklater was going to be rewarded for being mediocre for 12 years in a row. I'm glad they gave it to the very deserving Iñárritu.

Best Actor
Steve Carell - Foxcatcher
Bradley Cooper - American Sniper
Benedict Cumberbatch - The Imitation Game
Michael Keaton - Birdman
Eddie Redmayne - The Theory of Everything
Redmayne fangirled so hard. Like, the hardest I have ever seen someone fangirl at an awards show. I know people are going to hate his speech. Even though I wanted Keaton to take this, I'm fine with Redmayne. I know that's unpopular.

Best Actress
Marion Cotillard - Two Days One Night
Felicity Jones - The Theory of Everything
Julianne Moore - Still Alice
Rosamund Pike - Gone Girl
Reese Witherspoon - Wild
Why can't Rosamund have nice things?!??! Also I can't believe they missed the opportunity to show Jones' "I have loved you. I tried my best" clip. That scene broke me.

Best Supporting Actor
Robert Duvall - The Judge
Ethan Hawke - Boyhood
Edward Norton - Birdman
Mark Ruffalo - Foxcatcher
J.K. Simmons - Whiplash
Predictable, but awesome. Call your parents.

Best Supporting Actress
Patricia Arquette - Boyhood
Laura Dern - Wild
Keira Knightley - The Imitation Game
Emma Stone - Birdman
Meryl Streep - Into the Woods
I really wanted to get on board with Arquette's girl power speech but the whole thing just felt so awkward. And she brought a list again!

Best Cinematography
Emmanuel Lubezki - Birdman
Robert Yeoman - The Grand Budapest Hotel
Lukasz Zal and Ryszard Lenczewski - Ida
Dick Pope - Mr. Turner
Roger Deakins - Unbroken
I loved this win too. Not surprising.

Best Foreign Language Film
Ida
Leviathan
Tangerines
Timbuktu
Wild Tales
I totally thought Leviathan had the momentum here, but Ida took it right back. good for Poland.

Best Adapted Screenplay
American Sniper
The Imitation Game
Inherent Vice
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash
I picked Theory to win here, and I was rooting for Whiplash, but I'm glad The Imitation Game won something and this acceptance speech was so beautiful. #stayweird

Best Original Screenplay
Birdman
Boyhood
Foxcatcher
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Nightcrawler

Best Make Up and Hair Styling
Foxcatcher
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Guardians of the Galaxy
I actually picked Foxcatcher here. I'm dumb.

Best Original Score
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
Mr. Turner
The Theory of Everything
Good for Alexandre Desplat. I think I actually preferred his score in IG, but Budapest was on fire tonight. I'm just glad he won.

Best Original Song
“Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie
“Glory” from Selma
“Grateful” from Beyond the Lights
“I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me
“Lost Stars” from Begin Again
The people that performed these songs were the stars of the night.

Best Animated Feature
Big Hero 6
The Boxtrolls
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Song of the Sea
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Are you fucking kidding me? Big Hero 6? Who saw that coming? Ugh, how does the HTTYD franchise keep getting robbed like this?

Best Documentary Short
Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1
Joanna
Our Curse
The Reaper
White Earth
I actually got this right!

Best Film Editing
American Sniper
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Whiplash
I may or may not have flailed when this happened. This film was editing gold. I wanted to throw an Oscar at the screen when I watched this film.

Best Production Design
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
Into the Woods
Mr. Turner
No one deserved this more, I'm glad Budapest won it.

Feast
Me and My Moulton
A Single Life
I guessed this right too! I never get the shorts right, you guys!

I got this right too, just in case you thought I was done bragging

The Grand Budapest Hotel

  1. My dad wanted Michael Keaton to win. Even though he hadn't seen anything that was nominated, except for The Grand Budapest Hotel which he and my mom liked as it's one of 3-4 Wes Anderson films they've seen so far as my mom loves The Darjeeling Limited.

    1. Moonrise Kingdom is my favorite of his. I'm sad it didn't get the love that Grand Budapest is getting, because I thought it was so much better.

    2. I'm with you Brittani. 100%. And with thevoid99's dad, too.

  2. I'm 'fine' with Redmayne winning too. But that's it - just 'fine'. Not particularly stoked, like I would be if Keaton had won.

Yeah, Big Hero 6 winning was a bit of a bolt from the blue. Poor Dreamworks!

All in all though, a pretty good list of winners!

    1. I know! I suppose HTTYD3 will get to try again, but it's disappointing.

  3. I had predicted Keaton to win so I was a little disappointed he lost. But Eddie redmayne was just fantastic so I'm really happy for hime. He deserved it so I don't even care if it's unpopular to think so. Also Desplat finally winning (and for GBH!!) And whiplash winning editing kind of made my night

    1. Everyone in the lead actor category (except Bradley Cooper) were really strong, so I would've been happy with Keaton, Cumberbatch, Redmayne or Carell winning.

  4. WE WON! BIRDMAN WON!!!

    1. Or is it, BOYHOOD LOST!!!? I am stoked about the Birdman win as well.

    2. Birdman deserved to win because it was better! But I'm not gonna lie, I'm happy Boyhood lost too. :)

  5. Redmayne....I haven't seen anyone being this awful on stage in ADD kind of way since Roberts went batshit when she won, what a fail that choice was. Years from now people who see Birdman will check imdb see Keaton didn't win and wonder how the hell did it happen because it's such a travesty

    1. lol I'm starting to think the Academy doesn't like Keaton for whatever reason.

Gwyneth Paltrow still has the most embarrassing stage acceptance though. Redmayne was overly excited.

  6. I am happy about the Birdman wins -- that film was quite innovative and unique. I don't have strong opinions about the rest of it, although I was hoping for a win for Rosamund. Great post!

    1. Thank you! Yeah, I was really hoping for Rosamund too, even though she had 0 chance against Moore. That's a shame.

  7. Hi Brittani, I think I like your predictions better than the actual winners!

    1. lol. I think I like the winners, with the exception of Big Hero Six

  8. "Redmayne fangirled so hard." That was definitely 100% my favorite part of the night. I also didn't enjoy NPH as a host; totally boring and flat. Ellen did a much better job last year :\ I'm also glad Birdman won...I wouldn't flipped with Boyhood had won. ..

    1. Franco and Hathaway did a better job then NPH did, honestly. He was the worst one I've seen in awhile.

      Delete
  9. NPH's hosting didn't work, but judging from his multiple Tony hosting performances I'd say it was definitely the material's fault - most of the jokes were just lame.

I liked Redmayne too, and Julianne Moore. Double the unpopular, but I thought they were both brilliant and perfectly deserving of wining those oscars.

    1. Moore was good, but I just think she's been nominated for better performances.

Apparently there were no comedy writers on the staff this year. lol

  10. I hated Sean Penn in dragging to reveal the winner and also that tasteless *joke* but YAY for Birdman!

Btw your image of waving Joaquin always makes me laugh! :D

    ReplyDelete

    1. Haha, I love waving Joaquin too. Yeah, Sean Penn needed to go, that douche.

  11. Moore, Arquette and Simmons were so locked in. That's kinda what made the ceremony a little bland for me. I had no idea which way Best Picture/Director or Actor would go though. All the results are pretty okay, even if I was really pulling for Dern and Witherspoon. Redmayne was so cute; he's young and why not be excited for winning? :)

    1. Oh for sure. It was nice not knowing who was going to take director/best picture. It hasn't been that way for awhile. I'm still not crazy about all of the acting prizes (aside from Simmons who was amazing) I wish he would've thrown a chair at the orchestra when they started to play people off.

  12. I haven't been able to participate in any Oscar conversation until now because the Big Hero 6 win caused a funk so deep I have been confined to my bed for two whole days.

That's not true (I've just been busy), but How to Train Your Dragon 2 losing REALLY pissed me off. I'm also doubly pissed at Disney because if it weren't for Feast I would have gotten ALL the shorts right, which NEVER happens.

WORD on the Felicity Jones thing. I thought the clips they chose for Best Actress were awful across the board.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They really were! They picked the shittest clips for each person.

I'm still pissed about HTTYD2. I'm going to bitch about that for awhile.

  13. I was bummed that The Imitation Game won screenplay over Whiplash, but yeah, you can't argue with that speech. Honest and perfect. #StayWeird, indeed.

    1. I've been telling myself the reason they didn't win was because they didn't belong in that category to begin with.

  14. Birdman won, so I'm good. Still bummed about Keaton losing though.

    1. Yeah, that did suck. I can't fault Redmayne because I thought he was really good and liked Theory, but I would've picked Keaton.
