Thursday Movie Picks: Romantic Comedies

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves in romantic comedies! I hate these, really I do, but these three are some of the bigger ones I actually enjoyed.

Mean Girls

Words cannot describe how much I love this movie. High school girls are awful, and this is pretty much spot on. Especially the comment about dressing like a slut on Halloween. I still laugh at that.

The Girl Next Door
This film is kind of a stupid comedy, but I think it works. I love Emile Hirsch, Paul Dano, and Chris Marquette. They're a good team.

10 Things I Hate About You
Heath Ledger AND Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the same movie? I love it. Here's the part where I admit I loved some rom coms as a teen, this is one of the few I can actually say I still love.

Comments

  1. Mean Girls is so fetch.
I don't care if it's a guilty pleasure, it's funny and twisted in equal measure and there are so many quotable lines. You could have a ten minute conversation just using lines from the film.

  2. LOVE 10 Things I Hate About You. Remember when Julia Stiles was the Next Big Thing?

I ADORE Mean Girls (and everything Amanda Seyfried does in it is GOLD), but that is really stretching the definition of "romantic comedy"! I actually love that in the end it is really about friend relationships as opposed to romantic relationships.

    1. It definitely doesn't end as a romantic comedy, but the fact that a good portion of the conflict was centered around a romance makes it work for me. Plus to be honest, I don't like very many rom coms. It was hard just finding these three.

    2. I was just about to say the same thing but both Daniel and Fisti beat me to it. Rom-com Genre does get a bad rap doesn't it...for a popular genre it produces a lot of crap and seem like quite a number of us had quite some difficulty coming up with three this week.

  4. Mean Girls is a great movie so I won't argue it at all. I really like The Girl Next Door, too. Just never had any inclination to watch 10 Things. Meh, maybe I'll give it a shot.

  5. Didn't much care for The Girl Next Door but the other two are really fun films. Just got around to Mean Girls this year, I'd been putting it off because it just didn't look like my thing but it was quite engaging.

    1. I think a lot of people, myself included wrote Mean Girls off right away. I saw it in theaters just for something to do and ended up loving it.

    1. Julia Stiles has an excellent resting bitch face. I used to see everything she was in when I was a teen. Her and Kirsten Dunst.

  7. All three great picks! I loved The Girl Next Door so much. Great update of Risky Business...sort of. Elisha Cuthbert is, well, words just can't describe. For some reason, I never considered Mean Girls a "romantic comedy" but I get it. It's probably the best teen movie ever written. Thanks, Tina Fey! 10 Things I Hate About You is probably my wife's favorite movie. I like it too

  8. I'm not a romcom fan I have a completely irrational hatred of The Back Plan, a film where Jennifer Lopez can't get a boyfriend (yeah...right) but I absolutely love 10 Things I hate About You.

  9. I almost picked 10 Things I Hate About You. I am not a huge fan of Mean Girls -- I think it comes down to our age difference. :-) The Breakfast Club was my generation's coming of age movie.

    1. Oh for sure. I definitely watched The Breakfast Club when I was younger. Mean Girls came out when I was a junior in high school, I believe.

  11. I got caught up watching Mean Girls last night; it's hard to pry your eyes away when it was that good. I think it's Rachel McAdam's best role to date. 10 Things I Hate About You is amazing, one of my favorites as well!

  13. I keep hoping someone gives Julia Stiles a good role, I do miss her
Great picks though, especially Mean Girls and 10 Things.

I might do something similar for a Valentines Day feature.
