Thursday Movie Picks: Villainous Children

This week's Halloween theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is villainous children. There's so many great horror films to choose from with bad kids. I'm just bummed I already used The Ring.

1) Village of the Damned

What would you do if you lived in a town where 9 women mysterious got knocked up and gave birth to creepy peroxide blonde babies? Fucking move, that's what.

2) Wicked Little Things

This little indie had some very unsettling imagery. It might not be the strongest horror film out there, but it nails the creep factor for sure.

3) Pet Sematary

Funny story, I know two people personally that named their sons "Gage" because of this movie. Because nothing says "story of your birth name" better than "Oh, I named you after this dead kid in this horror movie." Hopefully one of them has another son they can name Malachai to even it out. Kidding aside, I love this movie. Always have.

    1. It's very creepy. Kind of campy, but I like that sort of thing. :)

  4. LOL at people naming their kids Gage because of Pet Sematary. It's like naming your kid Damien after the kid in The Omen.

    1. Exactly! Yeah, Gage is an interesting name, but come on. Everyone will think of Pet Sematary.

    2. I was going to say the same thing, lol. That's the only o.e of these I've seen. Love the gif of Gage, btw. Been meaning to see Village of the Damned forever. Need to get to it.

    3. I've never actually seen the original, just the remake. But I liked it quite a bit, and didn't even realize it was a remake for the longest time.

  6. I thought Village of the Damned would be showing up a great deal today along with The Bad Seed and The Omen, haven't seen those last two yet but Village is making its presence known. Wonderful eerie chiller and the English film making reserve serves the story perfectly.

I've never heard of Wicked Little Things and it seems as though I'm in the minority but I hated Pet Sematary. I'll join in with the others though that it should hardly be an inspiration to name your kid after that awful child.

I'm not much of a horror fan so I went the suspense route for two of mine. My other has something even more frightening, a kid who is rotten not because of possession but just plain malevolence.

The Other (1972)-Eerie chiller about identical twins Niles and Holland Perry and a string of "accidents" that befall their family tied to a game they play. Can the game be stopped? Filled with moody dread and excellent acting from the entire cast.

The Children's Hour (1961)-Two young women friends, Karen and Martha (Audrey Hepburn & Shirley MacLaine), run an elite girl’s school with the assistance of Martha’s aunt. One of the girls is a vicious, cruel bully who when she is disciplined for tormenting the other children spreads a lie that ultimately devastates the lives of all involved. Based on a Lillian Hellman play that was considered scandalous in its day. Miriam Hopkins who plays the selfish aunt in this starred in the original watered down, but still good, film version in the 30’s called These Three in the role Shirley MacLaine plays here.

The Innocents (1961)-Deborah Kerr stars as a governess in Victorian England who becomes convinced that the unnerving children in her charge are possessed by evil spirits and sets out to help them. Superb rendition of Henry James's novella The Turn of the Screw with a brilliant, award worthy performance by Kerr.

    1. I haven't seen your picks, but I've heard of the Innocents before and that sounds pretty interesting. They all do, really.

  7. I picked Village of the Dammed as well. I don't know the 2nd one but have heard of the last one and scared to watch it. I have to say that is a bit creepy to name your kid after a dead evil one

    1. Right? Seems kind of popular. I went to school with a Regan who was named after the character from the Exorcist.

    2. OK that's weird but we are human beings and we are all a bit strange in one way or another:)

  8. Talking of questionable names, my friend of my cousin is called Hannah Bell...she was born in 1992 when Silence of the Lambs was still very popular.

Nice choices, I certainly need to check out Pet Sematary.

  11. Village of the Damned has been quite popular in this week's topic and it's a great pick! Haven't seen the other two, though I've seen clips of Pet Sematary, definitely way too scary for my feeble nerves.
