Fuck ups: The Movie

A team of scientists are on board the International Space Station. There's David Jordan, (Jake Gyllenhaal) Sho Murakami,(Hiroyuki Sanada) Rory Adams, (Ryan Reynolds) Miranda North, (Rebecca Ferguson) Hugh Derry, (Ariyon Bakare) and their commander Ekaterina Golovkina. (Olga Dihovichnaya) They're studying a life form that they've pulled off Mars in a controlled environment. But of course, mistakes are made and the life form evolves too rapidly and begins to cause problems to say the least.

I wasn't planning on seeing this film. I lost the "what movie should we see?" debate but I have to admit it ended up being better than I thought it would. It was never boring, but it doesn't really add anything new to the sci fi horror genre. This movie could've practically been connected to the Alien trilogy. It didn't have many original thoughts.

The acting was good. I cared about all of the characters even though they get put in some fairly ridiculous situations. But they're a nice diverse group. I rooted for them all. The thing that stands out the most about this film is the ending, it's pretty ballsy. It deserves credit for that.

Recommended: Rental.

Grade: C+

Memorable Quote: "Come on, Calvin..." - Hugh Derry (Ariyon Bakare)

  1. I managed to convinve my husband this was scary enough that he wouldn't want to see it in the cinema, but I'll definitely see it eventually. I expected it to be awful, so the lukewarm reviews have actually got me excited, lol.
Plus, I've been waiting YEARS for Reynolds and Gyllenhaal to be on once screen together. Swoon!

    1. They're barely on screen together, unfortunately. :(

  2. Once I heard the rumor about this being a prequel to a Venom movie, my pants definitely got a little tighter. I believe that's entirely fake, but combine that BS with your lovely post and I'm at the very least, intrigued.

But the cinema is crowded these days, as f--king March is basically what May used to be for Summer movie season. So...most likely a pass for me.

    1. I'm guessing that stems from the fact that the trailer used footage from Spiderman 3 of people looking to the sky, but if I recall that shot wasn't in the movie at all. Being a prequel to Venom would be interesting but it doesn't really make sense lol.

  3. I'll wait to see it on DVD, I'm sure Reynolds is not very good and dies horribly and hilariously :P

    1. Reynolds was good for what he needed to be. He's not in it very much.

  4. I didn't mind it, but it's pretty forgettable.

  5. Not much interest in this film. I saw the trailers for it so, knowing Ryan Reynolds-he likes some icky death. I hear it compared to Alien so I instantly go to that thing that comes out of John Hurt's chest. I bet that thing somehow devours Reynolds from the inside out. I also have this funny suspicion that Gyllenhaal is the hero but either takes the ting out to deep space and dies with it or he dies but some passersby find the alien and look closer at it and then the film ends. Ughhhh

  6. I'm still not sure if I'm going to watch this at all, but maybe it would interest me some day. Great review.

    1. It's definitely a rental. Maybe a weekend afternoon movie one day.

  7. The thing about the ending is that when the pod thing parachuted down to Earth I was thinking 'it's either Jake's pod... or it's Rebecca's pod'. If it's 50/50 it is hardly surprising either way.

I did enjoy the film, however, some pretty gory deaths.

    Good review.

    1. I didn't really consider it to be his pod until the door didn't open right away. Then I was like 'ohhh..." lol

  8. Surprisingly I enjoyed all of these madness despite its lack of originality. What always occurred on my mind is: Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant has a contender to prove to people.

    1. That's true, though Covenant will probably win out on reputation alone.
