Review: Spider-Man: Homecoming

When you're tired of waiting..

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) isn't exactly adjusting back to his high school life very well after being called upon by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) in Civil War. Parker attempts to prove he's ready to fight alongside the Avengers by trying to help people around New York. He ends up encountering a man named Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) who makes a living selling alien weapons to criminals and this provides Peter with his biggest solo threat since.

It feels good to have Spider-Man back in the MCU. His cameo was perfect in Civil War and his first solo outing was good as well. While Tobey will always hold a dear spot in my heart, I think Holland is the best Spiderman we've had. He captures that naivety and humor Peter has perfectly.

Homecoming finds a good balance between Peter's school life and his new life of fighting crime. Vulture was a good villain. He felt fleshed out and the film even took the time to give us a quick look at the next film's villain in the from of Scorpion (Michael Mando) They also were careful not to overuse Tony. Like I figured, nearly all of his scenes in the film were in the trailers so he probably had less than 10 minutes of screen time total. The only time it felt forced was when Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) came in. I don't know if it's because Paltrow is so insufferable or if it was because Tony was so much more interesting when they were on their "break" but that was the only time I didn't like the Iron Man cameo.

I liked the cast of teenagers they had here. Jacob Batalon as Peter's BFF Ned was the standout. My man Abraham Attah was even there for a bit (Still annoyed about his lack of Oscar nom for Beasts of No Nation) I liked Zendaya's new character of Michelle, but I think calling her "MJ" at the end was the wrong move.  Let her be Peter Parker's "Rachel Dawes" so to speak. MJ is supposed to be this beautiful, popular party girl. Zendaya being a beautiful, popular party girl herself would've been great at that too, but nothing about Michelle is very MJ like. I'm sure they thought it would be a nice nod for comic fans, but it came off more eye-rolling than anything. Especially when Michelle was cool on her own.

Aside from that, the only issue with the film I really had was how long it felt. It's very rare that I feel that way during Marvel movies, but it's a fun time at the movies and I look forward to more Spidey in the MCU.

Memorable Quote: "I was....looking at porn." - Ned (Jacob Batalon)

  1. I'm glad I didn't have to answer a follow-up question to that Ned quote. I could imagine myself like UHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh til my face froze permanently. Phew.

Glad you liked it, and agree with you on all fronts. I wasn't so stoked on MJ either, but what the Hell. I thought the other girl was some alternate MJ-type, but I guess they've got some curveballs for us slower types.

Did you see the one thing coming? That was the first thing my son said to my wife when we got out (she took my daughter to Despicable Me 3 - haha!) and I was like, Dude....shhhhhh.

(sorry, and you know this...I tend to ramble)

    Great post!

    1. It's funny, I read spoilers beforehand so I knew about that one thing, but I had forgotten about it by the time I watched so it did sneak up on me, even though I had read about it. That was smooth of them.

You're on a blog called "Rambling Film" ramble all you want. :D

  2. I'm hopefully seeing this tomorrow! I'm trying to tame my expectations...we've been shown so many trailers now I'm not even sure there's going to be anything new to see!

    1. There's quite a bit that wasn't in the trailers, don't worry!

  3. I am hearing nothing but good things about this film. Everyone loves this Spider-Man even though I do like Tobey Maguire. His Best Friend sounds like he steals the picture...almost. I agree with you about Paltrow....does she not have super powers herself..turning into lava woman or something..?.

    1. Nope. She's just super annoying. I still like Maguire too, he was a much better Spider-man than Garfield was, but Holland has them both beat.

  4. This was just okay for me. Sean loved it of course.

  5. I really hope to see this film this coming weekend as I really liked Tom Holland as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Plus, I just hope it's better than the last 2 Spider-Man movies. Ugh.....

    1. Oh it is, by far. It helps that Holland actually looks like a teenager where as Garfield looked like he should've been teaching at that school.

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I really felt those two+ hours. I usually don't in Marvel films.

  7. I will catch it on DVD it is just too much of Spiderman already and 3 different ones that essentially all feel the same in 20 years time is too much. I see there is some drama with clickbait 'articles' wondering if Tony is a vilain here? Man they just write about anything these days

    1. Tony a villain? lol that doesn't even make sense. I will say this one does feel a lot different than the other Spider-man films as they actually focus on Peter's school life.

  8. Spidey can't fight 6 bad guys in the MCU all at once
