Thursday Movie Picks: Break Into Song (non musicals)
Would the world be a better place if we all spontaneously broke into song? Maybe. This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is all about that, but with a twist - they can't be from musicals. Here's what I came up with.
1) (500) Days of Summer
Okay, they technically break into dance in this film as the lead isn't singing, but I absolutely loved the little number they did to "You Make My Dreams" in this movie.
2) 10 Things I Hate About You
Heath Ledger singing "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" will never not be sexy.
3) Step Brothers
I almost went with another one of my favorite comedies - Anchorman when they sang "Afternoon Delight", but then I remembered how hard I laughed in the theater when Derek's family sings "Sweet Child O' Mine" in the car. The kids are hamming it up, the wife is phoning it in, and the husband is annoyed.

Great moments for sure. I love Hall and Oats in 500 days..One of my faves is in Magnolia when the cast sings Wise Up by Amiee Mann
ReplyDeleteI didn't even think of Magnolia until I saw it on another list.
DeleteOh my God Kathryn Hahn in Step Brothers and that entire subplot with her music-crazy husband :D Funniest thing in the movie
ReplyDelete"I just want to roll you into a little ball and shove you in my vagina." looool
DeleteAwesome picks! Heath singing is possibly my favorite part of the movie.
ReplyDeleteHe was so incredibly sexy.
DeleteWe match (500) Days of Summer! Ledger singing was nice.
ReplyDeleteYay! I love that movie.
DeleteGood choices though I haven't seen Step Brothers yet. I didn't love 500 Days but JGL was very good in it. I did like 10 Things very much though and Ledger singing that song was a very nice touch.
ReplyDeleteI thought this would be a tough week since the scope is so narrow but my three came to me quickly.
Adventures in Babysitting (1987)-When Chris Parker (a phenomenal Elisabeth Shue) agrees to babysit the Anderson kids after her date cancels at the last minute she has no idea that she is embarking on the rollercoaster ride of her life thanks to her friend Brenda (a hilarious Penelope Ann Miller) being stuck at the bus station in the city. Going to help against her better judgement she and the kids have one harrowing madcap adventure after another including an unexpected but spirited impromptu performance in a jazz club. Disarming and just plain fun.
The First Wives Club (1996)- At the funeral of one of their college roommates who committed suicide when her ex-husband married a younger woman three women (Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton) reunite for the first time in nearly 30 years. When they realize the reason for their friend's suicide, they discover a common bond-all of their ex-husbands have taken them for granted as well-they decide it's time for revenge and unite to get back at their exes. Scheming and chicanery topped by a musical number follow.
My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)-Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) panics when her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) calls out of the blue and tells her he is getting married the next weekend to pert, ultra-wealthy Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Once upon a time Julianne and Michael had made a pact to marry each other if they hadn’t found someone by their 28th birthday, with this news she decides Michael is the man for her and sets out to stop the wedding against the advice of her other best friend George (a scene stealing Rupert Everett). Hilarity and an unexpected musical number ensue. Disarming romantic comedy with Roberts’s superstar charisma totally responsible for making her rather contemptible character someone you almost root for.
Step Brothers is one of my all time favorite comedies. The only one of your picks I've seen is My Best Friend's Wedding and it's been years. I forgot there was a song involved. lol
DeleteHad I not already picked 500 Days of Summer for another week, I totally would have picked it for this week. LOVE that scene. Love that scene in 10 Things I Hate About You, too.
ReplyDeleteThey're both excellent. 500 Days has been on TV a lot lately and I've sat down to watch it every time.
DeleteOMG Stepbrothers! A+++ choice!!!!! lol!
ReplyDeleteThank you! lol
DeleteHaven't seen Step Brothers, but we match on the other two! Love them :D
ReplyDeleteStep Brothers is hysterical you have to see it!
DeleteHey! We share a pick. BTW, did you ever get the feeling of seeing that kid sing and wanting to punch the little shit for being smug?
ReplyDeleteThat kid was suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper smug. I wonder if they told him to play it like that or if he's just naturally smug. lol
DeleteGreat picks. I totally applaud the 500 Days choice. Maybe not strictly by the rules, but such a great moment of joy.
ReplyDeleteThere was music, it counts lol.
DeleteI haven't seen 10 Things but the other two are great picks, for sure.
ReplyDelete10 Things is amazing! I can't believe you haven't seen it. lol
DeleteAwesome picks! Heath's singing in 10 Things I Hate About You is always a scene that pops into my head. He was so gorgeous and irresistible. lol
ReplyDeleteYes he was. I miss him.
DeleteAll 3 are popular picks this week. I love Heath who was great in this movie and would have been the choice for the lead in La La Land if he was here. I haven’t seen the other 2 but from all the love for these 2 this week, makes me want to see them.
ReplyDeleteOh man Heath in La La Land would've been incredible.
DeleteI was just thinking now, because of your Step Brothers pick, any movie about road trips will surely have one singing scene.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point lol
DeleteI can sing anything in opera in form of Elvis Presley's Now or Never.
ReplyDeleteOh God, my sister absolutely loves ‘10 Things I Hate About You’. She watches it all the time with my mother. I don’t deny that it’s a nice movie. However, the ‘cringe’ element is a bit too much for me :s
ReplyDeleteIt's not for everyone. I get it lol
