Review: Long Shot

Fred is a journalist who quits his job when a huge media conglomerate buys out the magazine he writes for. By change he ends up at a part with the Secretary of State, Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron) who used to be his few years older babysitter. She hires him to be her speech writer as she takes on a presidential run.

While pulling up IMDb to reference as I started writing this review, I just realized that the character of Parker Wembley, the sleazy dude that buys the magazine Fred worked for and routinely tries to corner Charlotte was played by Andy fucking Serkis. I had no idea. I could not figure out where I recognized the actor from while I was watching this and had no clue it was just Serkis under a bunch of makeup. Wow. 

Now that my mind is done being blown, Long Shot is a pretty solid comedy. Theron and Rogen are both good in their roles and have great chemistry together. This is being sold as sort of a reverse Pretty Woman scenario but when you meet the characters it's pretty easy to see why they'd end up together. 

Not every joke lands, but there's one that is easily one of the funniest things I've seen all year and it's probably the hardest I've laughed in a theater this year as well. There's a lot of points where cliches come into play, but the film never dwells on them long enough to get annoying. 

Recommended: Yes

Grade: B-

    No way was that Andy Serkis! He's such a chameleon. I really enjoyed Long Shot too, I wasn't expecting a lot from it but it was so much funnier than I thought it would be.

    Which thing made you laugh the most? I almost died when Rogen hit that car in the beginning

    I am not sure about this but, I think, that is because I am not much of a fan of Seth Rogan. I find him somewhat obnoxious and full of himself. I will see it but probably on DVD.

    I do want to see this but I'll wait for it on TV as I don't think I have time to go see a film in the theaters right now. I'm just getting tired a lot these days.

Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) has quietly been trying to make a difference as The Batman in Gotham. He can't be everywhere. He works closely with Lt Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and they face a puzzling crime by a masked murderer going by The Riddler. Thursday Movie Picks: Wedding Movies

How fitting that Wandering Through The Shelves has us start the month of June with movies about weddings. June brides are a thing, right? At least that's what people kept telling me when I got married in June. I just picked it because it was warm. To be honest, I don't like many wedding movies, so this was kind of tough, but here's a few I can tolerate. 1) Wedding Crashers This is one of my favorite comedies until the last 20 minutes or so when it falls flat on its face. But it's so hilarious and quotable before all of that, I can forgive it. Lock it up. 2) Rachel Getting Married I used this one for a pick last year but it's easily my favorite movie involving a wedding. The acting is fantastic. I 3) Corpse Bride Truth be told, I wasn't crazy about Corpse Bride, but like I said. Slim pickings in the wedding movie world for me. I'd watch this over a "classic" like My Best Friend's Wedding or Runaway Bride any day.  click th

Random Ramblings: The Radio Flyer Conundrum

Recently, I was talking to someone about who I thought were the best child actors when I was also a child.  Two that really stood out to me were Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello, and one film those two were in together was called Radio Flyer.  Then I was reminded about the uniqueness of this film. Instead of reviewing the film, I wanted to have an open discussion about the ending. It deals with a tough issue; child abuse. What I’ve noticed is the way that the film ends is interpreted many different ways, and the filmmakers never came forward to say what was right and wrong. I’m interested in hearing everyone’s opinions on it. How did you interpret the ending? Obviously spoiler alerts will follow..
