Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Secret Agents/Spies

It's another TV theme from Wandering Through The Shelves and this week we're talking about shows with spies/secret agents. That was an easy one for me, here's what I came up with. (And yes, one day I will watch The Americans)

1) Agent Carter

For me, this is the gold standard of spy shows and it was wrongly cancelled way too early. ABC didn't give this a chance. They pump money into Agents of SHIELD when this was far better. I'm forever bitter about it.

2) Agents of SHIELD

I have a love/hate relationship with this show. The fact that it now mostly revolves around Daisy has made it pretty unwatchable for me. She is a textbook Mary Sue. (and if you ever try to say Rey from Star Wars is one, watch Daisy then apologize for your mistake) This is a shame because it has some amazing characters aside from her, and did Ghost Rider super well. I wish they had focused more on just being SHIELD and left out the Inhuman bullshit.

3) Archer

I don't watch this consistently but whenever I turn it on it always makes me laugh.

  1. I have about 3 whole seasons of Archer to catch up with which is embarassing because it's one of my all time fav shows 😂

    1. It's so consistently funny, I'm not sure why I don't put more of an effort into it.

  2. Archer keeps popping up on my Netflix and I keep ignoring it. I think I’ll give it a chance now.

  3. I love that you picked Archer too, and it's so funny that you watch it sporadically like I do, too! Maybe that's just how everyone watches it?!
I never saw Agent Carter, but I need to.

    1. That's a good point, I think I know one person that watches it continuously. lol

  4. I need to watch Agent Carter because it looks intelligent and well acted with a woman in a great role...no wonder it was cancelled by ABC. I fell off Agents of Shield way back in the first season. My brother gave me the first season of Archer and I still have to watch it which I will this year.

    1. UGH I LOVE AGENT CARTER! AoS got off to a really bad start but once they caught up with the Hydra plot from The Winter Soldier they got better. Then they squandered all their goodwill with the Inhumans subplot.

  5. I'm terrible with current TV. I hardly watch a thing because it seems as soon as I take a shine to a show it gets cancelled. I consider it a small miracle that Nathan Fillion's The Rookie and Brooklyn Nine-9 have both been renewed for another season since they are the only two shows I watch!

That said I'm zero for three on your picks though I've heard of them all. Since it's ended I'm more likely to give Agent Carter a try plus its the one I've heard the most positive things about.

I am crazy for 60's spy shows, they usually have a sly knowing edge with minimal blood and guts and great guest stars so that's the well I went to for my choices this week. The first I thought of Mission: Impossible I'd used before but it wasn't hard to come up with another three.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964-1968)-Secret agents Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) and Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) work for secret international counterespionage and law-enforcement agency U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) under the direction of Alexander Waverly (Leo G. Carroll) to battle evil organizations such as THRUSH and other nefarious forces that threaten freedom with much gadgetry thrown in. A trendsetting hit in its day this received a decent big screen treatment in 2015.

It Takes a Thief (1968-1970)-Sleek international thief Alexander Mundy (Robert Wagner) temporarily incarcerated is offered a deal by Noah Bain (Malachi Thorne) head of the Secret Intelligence Agency (SIA) to be free if he steals important information or objects for the government. Breezy, stylish series globetrots around the world providing a time capsule of 60’s high fashion and high quality guest stars (among them Bette Davis, Teri Garr & Suzanne Pleshette) and in the later episodes Fred Astaire as Mundy’s master thief father Alistair.

Get Smart (1965-1970)- Maxwell Smart (Don Adams), a highly intelligent but bumbling spy works for CONTROL, battling the evil forces of rival spy agency KAOS with the help of his chic and competent partner Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon) while their often exasperated Chief (Edward Platt) looks on. Daffy fun with Adams’ deadpan delivery even under the most extreme conditions priceless. Tons of cool gadgets, gotta love the shoe phone!

    1. I'm familiar with The Man from U.N.C.L.E and Get Smart but not your second pick. I never did watch the movie remakes of either of these films though.

  6. Still wish there was a third season of Agent Carter. Fucking ABC. I'm guessing they wasted all of that money that could've gone to the show and instead used it on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Inhumans... ugh...

At least it was good to see Jarvis in Endgame. Jarvelous!!!!!!

    1. I loved seeing Jarvis in Endgame, that really is the only ABC Marvel show that deserved to be acknowledged in the movies.

  7. I love watching Archer too! It's such a hilarious show! Even though I only got through the 1st season so far.

  8. I watched the first season of SHIELD, but only a few episodes of the others. SHIELD lost my interest. The others I liked what I saw, but I wasn't pressed about seeing more.

  9. Nice picks! I'm rewatching Agent Carter right now, and it would've been amazing if it could more than two seasons. Hayley and Dominic are so underrated in the MCU. Archer always makes me laugh too.

  10. UGH STILL SO UPSET that Agent Carter only got two seasons. It's EASILY the best thing Marvel has done. Hayley Atwell was so great, and the villains, especially in the second season, were actually compelling. I miss that show so much.

  11. I didn't really care that much for her character in Captain America so never did check out the Agent Carter TV series after.

Wasn't it always revolved around Daisy? That was what made me stopped watching Agents of Shield after the first few episodes of Season One.

    1. Daisy was always a main character but they made her more important than Coulson, who the show was centered around.
