Thursday Movie Picks: Witnesses

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves saw something. Did you? I'm bringing it way back this week.

1) Rear Window

Okay, so I just saw this for the first time last year, but from what I've seen of Hitchcock so far, this is by far my favorite.

2) Sister Act

A singer who witnesses a crime gets sent to a convent to hide out. I've lost count of how many times my BFF and I would break out with "Oh Happy Day" because of this film. This and the sequel were a staple for young me.

3) Our Lips are Sealed

Remember when the Olsen Twins were in witness protection? Objectively, this movie is terrible but I was obsessed with the Olsens when I was a kid. My hair cut and style were always inspired by them. I'm kind of surprised this film popped into my mind when I saw this theme. I had to roll with it.

  3. Oh I love, love, LOVE Rear Window!! It's my second favorite Hitchcock right behind Saboteur (objectively Rear Window is the better of the two but we all have our favorites). Hitch was firing on all cylinders with this one and each of the principals were dead on perfect casting.

I also adore Sister Act, the second not nearly as much, it's light and unbelievable but played with such a sense of fun and verve it's irresistible. Whoopi and the others are great but its Mary Wickes forever!

Happy to say I've never seen a single Olsen twins movie!! I find them noxious in every way so the thought of voluntarily sitting and viewing one of their output is anathema to me....however I'm hardly their core audience.

So many choice for this one I had to do a slight theme within the theme and all mine factor a train into their plot somehow.

The Narrow Margin (1952)-Tough, grizzled cop Walter Brown (Charles McGraw) is attempting to transport the widow (Marie Windsor) of a mob boss from Chicago to L.A. via rail to serve as a witness at the trial of her husband’s cohorts. Once underway they discover there is a hit men on the train, who will stop at nothing to prevent her from testifying. Lean low budget noir is a classic of the genre.

Narrow Margin (1990)-Deputy District Attorney Robert Caulfield (Gene Hackman) is charged with returning reluctant murder witness Carol Hunnicutt (Anne Archer) back from Canada to L.A. by train to testify in the trial of a mob boss. As they hurtle through the Canadian wilderness they find themselves pursued by two hit men charged with eliminating Carol. Reworking of the ’52 film is plusher but doesn’t pack quite the same punch.

Murder, She Said (1961)-On her way home Miss Jane Marple (Margaret Rutherford) witnesses a murder through the window of her passing train car. She notifies the police but they are unable to find a body however Miss Marple knows what she saw and determines to get to the bottom of things her own way. Getting a job as a maid at the manor house she believes is the setting of the crime she hunts for clues while engaging in a battle of wits with the bombastic owner (James Robertson Justice). Delightful comic mystery is based on an Agatha Christie novel.

    1. Ha, I figured you probably wouldn't be able to relate to the Olsen Twins film. Those were pretty specific. I haven't heard of any of your picks this week. Though the last title reminds me of Murder, She Wrote.

  4. Slap my forehead! Rear Window is perfect and I love this film. It is one of Hitchcock's best-I love this one, Strangers on a Train, Shadow of a Doubt and North By Northwest. Sister Act is so much fun and love the whole nun thing going on. My mom loved this film. Thankfully I never saw the strange Olsen Twins in anything, not even Full House. They are just way too creepy

  6. Rear Window is a great choice as is Sister Act. Never saw that Olsen twins movie but let's be glad that they at least gave up acting and let their younger sister be the one that can act.

  9. Awesome picks! Sister Act is so underrated. All of the women were hysterical, and the soundtrack is fun to listen to.

  11. Love Rear Window. Sister Act was fun.
The Olsen twins were cute when they were kids but their movies were usually terrible.
