Thursday Movie Picks: Break ups

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is about break ups. There's no shortage of films dealing with that. The rule I gave myself was not to use (500) Days of Summer because as one of my favorite movies I tend to use it a lot in TMP and it fits here. So here are three other films where break ups play a huge part that I enjoy

1) The Incredible Jessica James

Unlike my next two picks, we only really see Jessica's side of her breakup. Which is fine, as the film is about her getting back into the dating field and also meeting someone else coming off of their own break up. I think this is one of the best films Netflix has ever made. It's so funny, I cannot recommend it enough.

2) Like Crazy

This film might be the only time I've actually looked at the leading couple and thought "You know, why don't you two split." Jacob and Anna are a great couple but when they are separated and both attempt to move on, I felt bad for the two honest people they leave behind in order to try their hardest to be together.

3) Celeste and Jesse Forever

These two are trying to have the most amicable divorce possible while trying to remain friends. Even if you can predict everything that happens with this film, I still think it's lovely and sweet.

  2. I haven't seen any of your picks this week. I might see the last one since my ex and I split amicably and are good friends. He is really helping my hubby I out right now taking our freak dog for a walk(He is phobic of the outside so he pulls with full force and has popped my arm shoulder out of its socket which is easy to do)

    1. That's really cool that you were able to stay friends with your ex. I'm not sure if I could do that.

  4. I've only seen Celeste and Jesse and while some of it was unrealistic I did enjoy the film overall.

I heard of Like Crazy but haven't gotten to it yet. The other is new to me.

My first two look at the breakup from the woman's perspective and the last was just such a perfect fit I couldn't not use it despite not being the biggest fan of the film.

An Unmarried Woman (1978)-Erica Benton (Jill Clayburgh) feels secure in her longtime marriage to husband Martin (Michael Murphy) and their comfortable life with their daughter in New York City. Then one day walking down the street Martin tells her that he’s leaving her for someone else. Blindsided we follow Erica as she grapples with the break-up, reassesses her opinion of herself and finds an identity that isn’t tied to being an extension of someone else’s self-worth. Jill Clayburgh was Oscar nominated for her work.

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)-After successful literary reviewer Frances Mayes (a luminous Diane Lane) is told her husband is cheating on her by a vengeful author she slides into a deep depression. In an effort to help her out of it her best friend, Patti (Sandra Oh), encourages Frances to take a tour of Italy. During the trip, Frances impulsively buys a rural, somewhat decrepit Tuscan villa and struggles to find her balance again. Surrounded by eccentric characters and the beauty of Tuscany (the cinematography is gorgeous) she discovers a new life and family.

The Break-Up (2006)-Art dealer Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) and tour bus driver Gary (Vince Vaughn) meet cute and despite being opposites soon find themselves deeply involved and sharing an apartment. When their myriad differences finally drive a wedge between them and they break-up neither wants to vacate their home. As each attempts to get the other out their bitterness towards the other grows. Not a great movie but it does have the courage of its convictions and doesn’t cheat the audience with an unrealistic ending.

    1. The Break Up is popular today. I didn't mind it. I've seen parts of Under The Tuscan Sun...I think. It sounds familiar. An Unmarried Woman is one I'd like to see.

I definitely recommend both Like Crazy and The Incredible Jessica James. They're very different from each other, but both wonderful.

  10. I've seen all of your picks. Yes the first one is funny, but probably not as well watched as your other picks.

I don't really like Like, Crazy. I much prefer the other Doremus film also starring Jones, Breathe In.
