2020 Golden Globe Winners

Thanks to Tom Hanks, we have a new reaction meme and honestly the perfect representation of how I felt during this ceremony. Picks wise, I went 8/25 which is hysterically bad. I had the most fun during the TV awards because things I liked were actually winning. Gervais was an awful host but I've never been a huge fan. Will Ferrell's one joke landed better than all of his. Below are the list of winners plus my thoughts.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
1917
THE IRISHMAN
JOKER
MARRIAGE STORY
THE TWO POPES
The Irishman getting completely shut out was a surprise to me. 1917 is the only film I haven't seen here because IT'S NOT IN THEATERS YET. Seriously, who has seen this movie? I'm excited for it, but I feel like only 10 people have actually watched it.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
CYNTHIA ERIVO  -  HARRIET
SCARLETT JOHANSSON  -  MARRIAGE STORY
SAOIRSE RONAN  -  LITTLE WOMEN
CHARLIZE THERON  -  BOMBSHELL
RENÉE ZELLWEGER -  JUDY
Zellweger winning wasn't a surprise. I would've rather Erivo or Saoirse.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
CHRISTIAN BALE  -  FORD V FERRARI
ANTONIO BANDERAS  -  PAIN AND GLORY
ADAM DRIVER  -  MARRIAGE STORY
JOAQUIN PHOENIX  -  JOKER
JONATHAN PRYCE  -  THE TWO POPES
This is the most egregious win of the night. I'm sorry, I know some of you like Joker but I just can't imagine thinking Phoenix is better than Adam Driver. (or any of these men really, but especially Driver) I cannot relate with that at all, and Phoenix's speech was a jumbled mess where he basically apologized for being an asshole after all those stories about him being a horror on set came out. Is that going to be his campaign pitch? "I acted like a dick but METHOD!" Jesus. SAG Voters, make this right.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
DOLEMITE IS MY NAME
JOJO RABBIT
KNIVES OUT
ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD
ROCKETMAN
I'm not surprised with this win, but Dolemite, Jojo and Knives Out are all on my Top 10 list of the year so I was rooting for them.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
ANA DE ARMAS  -  KNIVES OUT
AWKWAFINA  -  THE FAREWELL
CATE BLANCHETT  -  WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE
BEANIE FELDSTEIN  -  BOOKSMART
EMMA THOMPSON  -  LATE NIGHT
I'm so happy for Awkwafina, she was wonderful in The Farewell (though this being a comedy is........iffy) but she seemed so shocked she won.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
DANIEL CRAIG  -  KNIVES OUT
ROMAN GRIFFIN DAVIS -   JOJO RABBIT
LEONARDO DICAPRIO  -  ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD
TARON EGERTON  -  ROCKETMAN
EDDIE MURPHY  -  DOLEMITE IS MY NAME
Taron was great in Rocketman but I thought Eddie had this in the bag. This win makes Taran a bigger lock for an Oscar nomination now, I think.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – ANIMATED
FROZEN 2
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD
THE LION KING
MISSING LINK
TOY STORY 4
MISSING LINK?! Who the fuck saw this coming?! 😂

BEST MOTION PICTURE – FOREIGN LANGUAGE
THE FAREWELL    (USA)
LES MISÉRABLES    (FRANCE)
PAIN AND GLORY    (SPAIN)
PARASITE    (SOUTH KOREA)
PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE    (FRANCE)
We all knew Parasite was going to win but I loved Bong Joon-ho's speech. "Once you overcome the one inch barrier that is subtitles you will be introduced to so many amazing films." Indeed. So happy about this win.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE
KATHY BATES  -  RICHARD JEWELL
ANNETTE BENING  -  THE REPORT
LAURA DERN  -  MARRIAGE STORY
JENNIFER LOPEZ -   HUSTLERS
MARGOT ROBBIE  -  BOMBSHELL
Lauren Dern is winning and Oscar and nothing is going to stop her.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE
TOM HANKS  -  A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
ANTHONY HOPKINS  -  THE TWO POPES
AL PACINO  -  THE IRISHMAN
JOE PESCI  -  THE IRISHMAN
BRAD PITT -  ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD
I thought Hanks would win, but since he had the Cecille award I should've went with Pitt. He's a co-lead, but was the best part of OUATIH. And of course the camera cut to Aniston at one point during it. How could they resist?

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE
BONG JOON HO  -  PARASITE
SAM MENDES  -  1917
TODD PHILLIPS  -  JOKER
MARTIN SCORSESE  -  THE IRISHMAN
QUENTIN TARANTINO  -  ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD
Mendes winning here surprised me. Not that I didn't think he had a chance, but just that I expected OUATIH and Irishman to get showered with so much love. I wanted Bong Joon Ho, but I'm just happy it wasn't Phillips.

BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE
MARRIAGE STORY
PARASITE
THE TWO POPES
ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD
THE IRISHMAN
I was really hoping for Parasite or Marriage story here. Hopefully they fair better with Oscar

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE
LITTLE WOMEN
JOKER
MARRIAGE STORY
1917
MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN
The score is the only thing I liked about Joker. I wish this had been the only thing this movie won tonight.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE
BEAUTIFUL GHOSTS” — CATS
“(I’M) GONNA LOVE ME AGAIN - ROCKETMAN
INTO THE UNKNOWN” — FROZEN 2
“SPIRIT” — THE LION KING
“STAND UP” — HARRIET
I had no idea where this category was going to go. Does this make Rocketman the front runner?

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
BIG LITTLE LIES
THE CROWN
KILLING EVE
THE MORNING SHOW
SUCCESSION
Succession actually won! I'm shocked. I really thought they'd go with Morning Show but I'm so happy with this win. I'm glad I finally started watching this.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
JENNIFER ANISTON  -  THE MORNING SHOW
OLIVIA COLMAN  -  THE CROWN
JODIE COMER -   KILLING EVE
NICOLE KIDMAN  -  BIG LITTLE LIES
REESE WITHERSPOON  -  THE MORNING SHOW
I did not care for S3 of The Crown, but I can't be mad about surprise Colman wins. She's so lovely and I always like her speeches.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
BRIAN COX  -  SUCCESSION
KIT HARINGTON  -  GAME OF THRONES
RAMI MALEK  -  MR. ROBOT
TOBIAS MENZIES   - THE CROWN
BILLY PORTER  -  POSE
I didn't think Cox would win but I'm happy he did. He's a legend and so good in Succession. Plus he did this on his way up to the stage

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
BARRY
FLEABAG
THE KOMINSKY METHOD
THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
THE POLITICIAN
This was an easy prediction and I'm happy with it. I just wish there was more Fleabag.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
CHRISTINA APPLEGATE  -  DEAD TO ME
RACHEL BROSNAHAN  -  THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
KIRSTEN DUNST  -  ON BECOMING A GOD IN CENTRAL FLORIDA
NATASHA LYONNE  -  RUSSIAN DOLL
PHOEBE WALLER-BRIDGE  -  FLEABAG
I'm so happy Phoebe won and Olivia Colman looked so proud in the audience. She thanked Andrew Scott for one of the reasons the show caught on so much because we all know how strong that horn storm was.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
MICHAEL DOUGLAS  -  THE KOMINSKY METHOD
BILL HADER  -  BARRY
BEN PLATT  -  THE POLITICIAN
PAUL RUDD  -  LIVING WITH YOURSELF
RAMY YOUSSEF  -  RAMY
I knew a freshman series lead would win but I picked the wrong one. I thought they'd go for Rudd. Ramy seems like a cool enough dude, but I don't have Hulu anymore so I haven't seen his show.

BEST TELEVISION LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
CATCH-22
CHERNOBYL
FOSSE/VERDON
THE LOUDEST VOICE
UNBELIEVABLE
Another one I actually got right. I would've been happy with Chernobyl or Unbelievable winning. They were both so well done.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
KAITLYN DEVER  -  UNBELIEVABLE
JOEY KING  -  THE ACT
HELEN MIRREN  -  CATHERINE THE GREAT
MERRITT WEVER  -  UNBELIEVABLE
MICHELLE WILLIAMS  -  FOSSE/VERDON
Williams once again gave another magnificent speech like she did at the Emmys. A nice subtle fuck you to Ricky Gervais who told everyone not to talk about politics because "they don't matter."

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
CHRISTOPHER ABBOTT  -  CATCH-22
SACHA BARON COHEN  -  THE SPY
RUSSELL CROWE   - THE LOUDEST VOICE
JARED HARRIS -   CHERNOBYL
SAM ROCKWELL  -  FOSSE/VERDON
I didn't expect Crowe to win this. He wasn't there but he sent a message about climate change and fighting the bush fires in Australia. A nice and important touch.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
PATRICIA ARQUETTE  - THE ACT
HELENA BONHAM CARTER  -  THE CROWN
TONI COLLETTE  -  UNBELIEVABLE
MERYL STREEP  -  BIG LITTLE LIES
EMILY WATSON  -  CHERNOBYL
I'm really shocked Streep didn't win, but Arquette got up and got political as well and I love her for it. I'm not the biggest fan of her work, but The Act is my favorite performance of hers.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
ALAN ARKIN  -  THE KOMINSKY METHOD
KIERAN CULKIN  -  SUCCESSION
ANDREW SCOTT  -  FLEABAG
STELLAN SKARSGÃ…RD  -  CHERNOBYL
HENRY WINKLER -  BARRY
I really thought Scott would win but I'm happy for Skarsgard because he's a wonderful actor who's very underrated. Plus his speech about not having any eyebrows so no one recognizes him and how someone gave him eyebrows for this role and now he has a Globe was hysterical.

  1. I didn't watch the thing at all. I was busy cleaning up the house as it was a mess filled with dust and such. My mom's cousin left this morning as me and my mom spent all afternoon and tonight cleaning.

A lot of the things Ricky Gervais says is actually true. As much as we have celebrities to try and tell us to do this and that, at the end of the day. We're still fucking peasants. Not all of the people who are at the Globes are disconnected from reality. Michelle Williams' speech was damn good.

Yes, I shared your pain when Adam Driver didn't win but this is the Golden Globes. No one takes them seriously. Hello, remember The Tourist?

    1. Cleaning sounds like more fun than watching Phoenix win a Globe over Driver.

I guess I disagree with the statement of actors not having a say since they're so much richer than all of us. At the end of the day, they're still voters and we shouldn't lose sight of that. Sure they don't face the every day grind the majority of us who don't make bank do, but they're still voters and they have a bigger platform to speak on it.

  3. MISSING LINK?! I mean...wow!
I'm so, so gutted. I did really like Joker and at the time said Phoenix should win but...ugh!

  5. Succession, Missed Link and the love for 1917 were the surprises for me, but I'm happy it (1917) it's getting rave reviews, I don't know why.
Also happy for the Cernobyl success.
My two controversial opinions: 1) I loved Gervais' speech (he was ruthless and I agree with the "let's skip politics" part) and 2) I wish someone else other than Laura Dern won for Supporting Actress. She was fine, but nothing outstanding for me. Still, I'm sure she will clean out all Supporting awards of this season

    1. For your opinions 1) Like I said to my reply to Steven, I think every voter needs a voice, no matter the amount of money they make. 2) I loved Dern in this role but I kind of agree. She's not the most exciting winner.

  6. I really want to see 1917 and will see it when it comes here. I a, one who liked Ricky Gervais who relished stepping on their toes even though the stars can make a difference although Patricia and her Golden Globes made me yawn. Michelle Williams was very eloquent and I am glad she won. Ellen was hilarious! Tom was sweet and people laugh at The Love Boat but I love that corny show which had many major stars from the big screen on like Don Ameche, Ray Bolger, Ginger Rogers and Greer Garson! They were also the first show allowed to film in Mainland China. On a totally superficial note, so glad necklaces are being worn and Helen Mirren was beautiful while Gweneth was wearing a shitty brown nightie showcasing her ass and she had way too much bronzer on. J-Lo looked like she was attacked by a Christmas bow..ridiculous. I have a feeling Taron will win the Oscar. I liked that Renée won but I have not seen the others and I loved her dress but that slit was way too high. I will have to say, Ellen needs to come back to host because she can give it but in such a way that she doesn’t step on people’s toes..or feet.

    1. I want Driver to win the Oscar but I'd take Taron over Phoenix any day lol

  7. I'm not passionate about award show season, but it feels like a dream that Joaquin is picking up anything for Joker. Not only was his speech a mess, but then he gets in the press room and basically mocks the journalists' questions? So disappointing. I'd hope the Oscar would go to anyone else, but it's not likely.

    1. I know. I do not understand the hype around this performance. Are voters so upset with super hero movies that they are throwing their love behind this because it's "different?" And why this over Logan which was so much better.
