Books I read in 2020

Why yes, this is a post I normally write in January, but I had told myself I hadn't read enough books last year to justify it. Then when I started counting up what I've gotten through this year, I realized I didn't do as badly as I thought. So here's my belated quick reviews.

Selznick's Folly - This is technically a script, but it fits in here. I read this because of Be Kind Rewind's wonderful youtube channel on actresses in Classic film. Unlike the books, I'm not going to give this a grade because it's not exactly complete, but it was an interesting read.

Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama - You may or may not remember me raving about this manga in the past, then it decided to end on the worst note possible. One of my biggest annoyances was how Mikasa, the strongest female character in the entire series simped over Eren the entire series. It was an annoying unrequited love that had purpose and potential for Mikasa to overcome, but then she never does. The ending the manga got is what I would've expected the anime to do, but never the story itself. Honestly, I owe Game of Thrones an apology. F (Yes, I'm that petty)

So You Want To Talk About Race by Ljeoma Oluo - I think every person wanting to be an anti racist should read this book. I hope one day this book is taught in schools. I've leant it to family members to better explain situations than I can do myself. Normally I get books from the library, but I bought this since the waitlist was insane, and I'm glad I have it forever now. A+

Axiom's End by Lindsay Ellis - Lindsay is one of my favorite youtubers and her sci fi book was right up my alley. The sequel is already coming out in a few weeks, and I look forward to reading that. Someone online joked about it being "The Three Body Problem for ~her~" and it's sort of true...and hilarious - B+

The Sundown Motel by Simone St. James - I love murder mysteries. It's easily my most read genre and this is a mystery AND a ghost story. I'm so happy my friend leant this to me. It's wonderful. A-

A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf - I tried to purchase more books from local book stores during lockdown and this is one I picked up. A Room of One's One is technically an article Woolf wrote, that was put together in a short story, but it's fun to think about how mad some men probably got reading this way back when. B

Tracks by Louise Erdrich - I'm trying SO hard to get into her books. She writes about Native life in my home state, and I recognize so many things she talks about, but her style of writing and lack of punctuation is just so hard for me. I almost wonder if I'd do better with her on audio book, even though that's a format I never use. C-

Wow, No Thank You by Samantha Irby - The third collection of essays from the incredibly funny Sam Irby. I adore her, I'll read every single thing she writes. I hope she never stops. I find what she writes about very relatable even though we are from very different walks of life. If only I could be as effortless as she is. A-
