Review: Sinners
Official synopsis: Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.
I've been slacking at going to the theater and blogging about what I watch from home lately. Thankfully Sinners was so good it gave me that kick I needed to get online and write about it.
I don't use the word "genius" lightly but what director Ryan Coogler and composer Ludwig Göransson do with music in this film is genius. I'm always a fan of Göransson's scores. He's ended up as a top artist on my Spotify multiple times, and I loved the bluesy guitar music he wrote here. There's a scene that I don't want to spoil that's truly an all-timer with what Coogler adds into the music.
The film takes its time building up to the eventual confrontation our main characters will have with the vampires. We learn plenty about the twins, their lovers Annie and Mary (Wunme Musako and Hailee Steinfeld) their little cousin with the gift of music, Sammie, (Miles Caton) and many friends, including what I feel like is the first time I've seen Asian characters in a Southern period piece actually speak in southern accents, Bo and Lisa. (Yao and Helena Hu) It's easy to care about them when the vampire Remmeck (Jack O'Connell) shows up to tear it all down. Again, what they do with music with the vampires feels fresh and really fit well with the film.
Sinners is definitely going to have you thinking about it long after the credits role. It features great performances from all involved, stunning visuals and infectious music. If I had one complaint, it's that some of the dialogue felt a bit off, but this is a film where the music speaks much louder.
Grade: B+
the music is definitely very good!

DeleteRight now, this is the best film of 2025 so far and it is likely going to be hard to top. Plus, I think this is Ryan Coogler's best film as I decided to work on my Auteurs piece on him right now as the one on David Lean is postponed for the time being.
ReplyDeleteI will RAGE if this doesn't get an Oscar nomination for the score. It will be Challengers all over again.
DeleteI read about Ryan Coogler and composer Ludwig Göransson's longtime collaboration, and they're definitely one of the best creative duos in Hollywood!! I was sick when the screening happened but will definitely catch this once it's available on VOD.
ReplyDeleteI hope you catch it asap! So worth it.
