Series Review: Black Mirror Season 7

If you've been reading here for a while, you probably already know how highly I regard Black Mirror. It's one of my favorite shows ever, it showed up a LOT during my Thursday Movie Picks run and a few years ago I ranked all the Netflix shows I had seen, and it was the easy #1. It's not always a perfect show. Anthologies rarely are, but even when I dislike an episode, I'm always going to watch whatever comes next. With the 7th season currently available to stream, here are my quick thoughts on each episode in the order I watched them

U.S.S Callister - Into Infinity - I started out with the direct sequel to season 4's best episode The U.S.S Callister. I thought this was a solid start, it was definitely missing Michaela Coel big time, but Cristin Milioti is such a star. I think it took the logical next step for that story.

Common People - This episode was absolute nightmare fuel and that's honestly Black Mirror when its at its best. When they started explaining the premise, I joked to my husband about how she "will probably dream about ads" and the reality was so much worse. Honestly, my only gripe was that I wish it had been set in Britain, because Black Mirror to me is just so much better with a British cast.

BĂȘte Noire - This was another really strong episode and ends on a pretty humorous note, which I definitely needed after how bleak Common People was. I don't think everyone will vibe with the ending, my husband certainly didn't, but I laughed my ass off.

Plaything - This episode started off really strong. It was on its way to be my favorite of the season until the ending absolutely ruined it. This is a great example of having a great idea, but not a great plan and they threw it all away in the end. I'd be open to them making a sequel of this story, if only pick up that massive ball they dropped.

Hotel Reverie - This was interesting in theory but it was so miscast that it ended up kind of being a dud. I hate saying that about Issa Rae, who I LOVE, but this wasn't the role for her. She had zero chemistry with Emma Corrin, who was basically just playing her role from The Crown.. Awkwafina, was also not believable, but I did appreciate seeing her toned down again.

Eulogy - I thought this episode was beautiful, but very predictable. I felt like it took a lot of cues from season 3's San Junipero, but it was not nearly as strong.

Overall, season 7 actually FEELs like Black Mirror again, which is a huge improvement over season 6 where I only liked one episode.

Have you watched it? What are your thoughts?

  1. I still haven't watched the series as I've been slacking on a lot of things as I'm right now dealing with a terrible cold and lack of sleep right now.

  2. I knew this season was coming, but wasn't aware it was out.

Suddenly a lot of shows I have watched have new seasons out. I have a lot of catching up to do.

    1. I'm in the same boat. I'm so far behind on The Handmaid's Tale.

    2. I caught up on Reacher, but I haven't seen the new seasons of The Last of Us, The Righteous Gemstones, The Wheel of Time, Black Mirror, Doctor Who, the new Daredevil show...
