Mount Rushmore of Movies vol 2

If you're not familiar with m.brown's blog, Two Dollar Cinema you need to be, because whether you know it or not, something is missing from your life.

He's brought back his Mr. Rushmore of movies blogathon, which I'm thankful he still talks to me after I submitted this last time around.

The rules are simple:

1) I'd like to have all posts done by Friday, March 3rd (where I'll create a master list, linking back to all of your, er, both of your sites), but it's cool if you finish way before that. Or later. I'll update as they come in.
2) Send me a heads up on twitter @twodollarcinema , reply in the comments below, text me, e-mail me (twodollarcinema@gmail.com), smoke signals, Bat-signals, non-verbal cues, Beastmaster handshakes - whatever! when you've finished, okay? Cool.
3) In your post, please use the rad banner my wife designed after forcing me to do the Truffle Shuffle. Okay, she would never do that...but still.
4) Share the announcement with the good people you know. Hell, the bad ones, too. Anyone can (and should) participate.

5) Be awesome.

I'll admit, I had something very, very juvenile in mind at first. But I'm short on time this week, so while I really wanted to poorly photoshop my favorite movie butt scenes onto Mount Rushmore, I had to go the serious route instead. Since the beautiful La La Land is still all the buzz, I thought I would point out some other great "modern musicals" that are out there that didn't get anywhere near the attention La La Land did. So I bring you:

"The Mount Rushmore of "Modern" Musicals That Are Not La La Land"

1) God Help The Girl
This adorable little musical is about a girl who is in a mental hospital who writes songs as a way of coping, and meets two other muscians along the way At first glance, the costumes might scream 60's at you, but it was shot in present day. (in this case, 2014)

2) The Last Five Years
While popular on Broadway, the film itself didn't get a wide release. It's about a five year relationship between a couple. When we meet Cathy, we see her at the end of it. Jaime starts at the beginning, they eventually meet in the middle.

3) Camp
Yes, another Anna Kendrick movie, but she makes good musicals. This little scene indie is about a theater camp for young performers. It features just about every theatre stereotype there is but it's an amusing film.

4) Sing Street
Okay so this film was set in 1985, but you know what? Modern enough. I'm still annoyed this it didn't get a Best Original Song Oscar nomination this year. It's about a boy who starts a band at his new school to win over a girl, and it's a touching little film.

Thanks for hosting, m.brown!

  2. At first I was gutted that I wasn't going to witness a Mt Rushmore of butts (there's always next time?) but you just highlighted 2 Anna Kendrick movies I haven't seen yet so I'm happy!

    1. Her character in Camp is such a little weirdo but she's lovely in The Last Five Years. lol

  3. This rules!

Dammit, Brittani. I'm 0/4 on these, and honestly, I love a good modern musical (the old ones can be a bit...rough sometimes). Uh, and Anna Kendrick. So, I think I have failed at life.

Now, I don't know if I'm breaking your rules...'cause these are all little under-seen, but I would have to put Moulin Rouge onto any list that had the word musical in it. I f--king love that movie. Maybe it's not modern enough??

Thank you so much for that super-thoughtful opening, so far all of you ladies (and Dell!) have said really nice things about my silly site, and I really, really appreciate it.

Oh, and as for butts? I was going to go serious...but I have now opted against that line of thinking. Butts are fine. But I'm aiming...higher? with my upcoming monument.

    1. I even had the butt photos I wanted to use saved, but this week has been rough and I didn't want to miss.

I love Moulin Rouge, but I figured everyone has seen that. Now I want to watch it again though.

  4. I haven't seen any of these the reason being musicals aren't my thing. But I've been meaning to watch Sing Street because everyone's saying it's great.

    1. It is good! I didn't like it as much as Begin Again or Once, but it's still a great watch.

  5. You promised people butts and then give a post where I haven't seen anything, woman :)

God Help the Girl....that's the Emily Browning one? How was she in this? I fear she will ruin American Gods

    1. I know but it's been seriously a rough week and this took two minutes to write. lol

I loved her in this. I think she's a very strong actress most of the time.

  6. I've seen one of these... how depressing is that, plus, I'm with Sati on this one, I would have loved to see the butts... imagine, our posts comvined, butts and beards.. add m.browns boobs into the mix and we would have made history :D

I'm curious about Camp.. that's the one that screams at me. But Sing Street WAS AMAZING! It felt very modern, you're right, the songs and everything were 80's but they carried so well into the present day. And yes, shame it didn't get an Oscar for that song, I listen to that song every time I see Sing Street mentioned somewhere (listening to it now).

    1. So do I! It would've been great to see it performed too. :'(

  7. I really enjoyed Sing Street. And since I was old enough to vote in 1985, I definitely count it as modern. LOL.

  8. Sing Street and God Help the Girl have been recommended to me a few times. I know one of the characters in God Help the Girl has his own band, Years and Years, who are rad but I've not actually seen the film. Both Sing Street and God Help the Girl are on my Netflix watchlist, though. And I'd probably watch just about anything with Anna Kendrick in it, although I've never seen either of those films I like Anna as a performer, she's reallyyyy talented. Great picks! :-)
