2020 Golden Globe Predictions: Who Will Win, Who Should Win

So the Globes snuck up on me this year. I normally try to get my list out a week in advance but the Globes are this Sunday and HOW?! Anywho, here are my predictions for who will win, and in some cases who should win.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
1917
THE IRISHMAN
JOKER
MARRIAGE STORY
THE TWO POPES
Who will win: The Irishman
Who should win: Marriage Story
I see the HFPA awarding Scorcese's effort even though Marriage Story is a better film. I hope I'm wrong here because I'd love to see Marriage Story emerge as a front runner.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
CYNTHIA ERIVO  -  HARRIET
SCARLETT JOHANSSON  -  MARRIAGE STORY
SAOIRSE RONAN  -  LITTLE WOMEN
CHARLIZE THERON  -  BOMBSHELL
RENÉE ZELLWEGER -  JUDY
Who will win: Renee Zellweger
Who should win: Cynthia Erivo
This feels like Zellweger's year so far but since Lupita isn't here, I think Erivo gave the strongest performance out of these actresses.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
CHRISTIAN BALE  -  FORD V FERRARI
ANTONIO BANDERAS  -  PAIN AND GLORY
ADAM DRIVER  -  MARRIAGE STORY
JOAQUIN PHOENIX  -  JOKER
JONATHAN PRYCE  -  THE TWO POPES
Who will and should win: Adam Driver
Anything else is just incorrect.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
DOLEMITE IS MY NAME
JOJO RABBIT
KNIVES OUT
ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD
ROCKETMAN
Who will win: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Who should win: Jojo Rabbit, Knives out or Dolemite is my Name
OUATIH feels like a front runner when it really shouldn't be. I think Jojo Rabbit could realistically win too, but I have a feeling they'll go with OUATIH. I'd love it if Knives Out or Dolemite won as well.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
ANA DE ARMAS  -  KNIVES OUT
AWKWAFINA  -  THE FAREWELL
CATE BLANCHETT  -  WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE
BEANIE FELDSTEIN  -  BOOKSMART
EMMA THOMPSON  -  LATE NIGHT
Who will win: Awkwafina
Who should win: Her or Ana
This is actually a really hard category to guess because none of the Oscar front runners are in it. I think Knives Out is the best movie here, but Awkwafina was wonderful in The Farewell. Or the Globes could go with Emma for Star Power. It's hard to say.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
DANIEL CRAIG  -  KNIVES OUT
ROMAN GRIFFIN DAVIS -   JOJO RABBIT
LEONARDO DICAPRIO  -  ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD
TARON EGERTON  -  ROCKETMAN
EDDIE MURPHY  -  DOLEMITE IS MY NAME
Who will and should win: Eddie Murphy
Again, I logically should go with Leo but Eddie is on fire lately and rightfully show. I wouldn't be mad if Roman won either. He was amazing.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – ANIMATED
FROZEN 2
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD
THE LION KING
MISSING LINK
TOY STORY 4
Who will win: Frozen 2
Who should win: HTTYD: The Hidden World
HTTYD never wins anything and it's one of the best animated franchises of all time. It's sad.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – FOREIGN LANGUAGE
THE FAREWELL    (USA)
LES MISÉRABLES    (FRANCE)
PAIN AND GLORY    (SPAIN)
PARASITE    (SOUTH KOREA)
PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE    (FRANCE)
Who will and should win: Parasite
Is anything stopping this? I doubt it. It's too good.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE
KATHY BATES  -  RICHARD JEWELL
ANNETTE BENING  -  THE REPORT
LAURA DERN  -  MARRIAGE STORY
JENNIFER LOPEZ -   HUSTLERS
MARGOT ROBBIE  -  BOMBSHELL
Who will win: Laura Dern
Who should win: Margot Robbie
Dern is the only actor that feels like a lock in the big 4 categories this year, but I preferred Robbie in Bombshell. I thought she was tremendous.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE
TOM HANKS  -  A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
ANTHONY HOPKINS  -  THE TWO POPES
AL PACINO  -  THE IRISHMAN
JOE PESCI  -  THE IRISHMAN
BRAD PITT -  ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD
Who will and should win: Tom Hanks
This is tough because aside from Hopkins I think any of these guys could win. Pesci would be my second child but I'm sticking with Hanks.

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE
BONG JOON HO  -  PARASITE
SAM MENDES  -  1917
TODD PHILLIPS  -  JOKER
MARTIN SCORSESE  -  THE IRISHMAN
QUENTIN TARANTINO  -  ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD
Who will win: Quentin Tarantino
Who should win: Bong Joon Ho
I haven't seen 1917 so I can't speak on that yet, but out of the rest of this, Bong Joon's movie was so much better. I still can't believe Phillips is here for his trash. Anyways, I think Quentin feels like he'll win. .

BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE
MARRIAGE STORY
PARASITE
THE TWO POPES
ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD
THE IRISHMAN
Who will and should win: Parasite
Go big or go home bet. Realistically OUATIH or Irishman will probably win, best Parasite is by far the most original movie here and this or Marriage Story truly deserve to win above the rest.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE
LITTLE WOMEN
JOKER
MARRIAGE STORY
1917
MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN
Who will win: 1917
Who should win: Little Women
I've heard the score for 1917 is amazing so I'm going to go with that here, even though I haven't seen it myself. I have seen the rest and Little Women is the best.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE
BEAUTIFUL GHOSTS” — CATS
“(I’M) GONNA LOVE ME AGAIN - ROCKETMAN
INTO THE UNKNOWN” — FROZEN 2
“SPIRIT” — THE LION KING
“STAND UP” — HARRIET
Who will and should win: Stand Up
This is another tough one. I think Stand Up is the best song. Into the Unknown wasn't even the best song in Frozen 2 so it's a shame that's what they're pushing instead of Show Yourself.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
BIG LITTLE LIES
THE CROWN
KILLING EVE
THE MORNING SHOW
SUCCESSION
Who will win: Morning Show
Who should win; Sucession
I'm evoking the "freshman drama" rule here because the HFPA love that so much. Sucession was really wonderful but I'd be shocked if the Globes didn't pick Morning Show.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
JENNIFER ANISTON  -  THE MORNING SHOW
OLIVIA COLMAN  -  THE CROWN
JODIE COMER -   KILLING EVE
NICOLE KIDMAN  -  BIG LITTLE LIES
REESE WITHERSPOON  -  THE MORNING SHOW
Who will win: Jennifer Aniston
Who should win: Kidman or Witherspoon, or Comer*
*Comer is the reigning Emmy winner but I haven't seen Killing Eve. I really enjoyed the actresses in Big Little Lies. As much as I love Colman, I did not enjoy her in The Crown.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
BRIAN COX  -  SUCCESSION
KIT HARINGTON  -  GAME OF THRONES
RAMI MALEK  -  MR. ROBOT
TOBIAS MENZIES   - THE CROWN
BILLY PORTER  -  POSE
Who will and should win: Billy Porter
This is an Emmy winner I think could repeat. Kit and Rami's shows are done but I don't see them getting Globes here. Brian Cox would also be a fine winner. Bonus points if he tells everyone to fuck off at the end of his speech.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
BARRY
FLEABAG
THE KOMINSKY METHOD
THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
THE POLITICIAN
Who will and should win: Fleabag
This is still coming strong from the Emmys, I think they continue here.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
CHRISTINA APPLEGATE  -  DEAD TO ME
RACHEL BROSNAHAN  -  THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
KIRSTEN DUNST  -  ON BECOMING A GOD IN CENTRAL FLORIDA
NATASHA LYONNE  -  RUSSIAN DOLL
PHOEBE WALLER-BRIDGE  -  FLEABAG
Who will and should win: Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Again, Fleabag was so great I see her continuing her hot streak. There's a lot of wonderful people in this category. I still wish I could watch Dunst's show. Come one Showtime, do a free preview.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
MICHAEL DOUGLAS  -  THE KOMINSKY METHOD
BILL HADER  -  BARRY
BEN PLATT  -  THE POLITICIAN
PAUL RUDD  -  LIVING WITH YOURSELF
RAMY YOUSSEF  -  RAMY
Who will win: Paul Rudd
Who should win: Bill Hader
I'm torn here, I invoked Freshman Series but Hader I think has a good chance of winning too.

BEST TELEVISION LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
CATCH-22
CHERNOBYL
FOSSE/VERDON
THE LOUDEST VOICE
UNBELIEVABLE
Who will win: Chernobyl
Who should win: That or Unbelievable
Chernobyl was wonderful but so was Unbelievable, I think the first has the slight edge because its technical specs were more striking on top of the writers and actors being good.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
KAITLYN DEVER  -  UNBELIEVABLE
JOEY KING  -  THE ACT
HELEN MIRREN  -  CATHERINE THE GREAT
MERRITT WEVER  -  UNBELIEVABLE
MICHELLE WILLIAMS  -  FOSSE/VERDON
Who will win: Michelle Williams
Who should win: King, Dever or Wever
I think Williams will repeat her Emmy win but I really love the other three. Joey King especially, she was so great in The Act.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
CHRISTOPHER ABBOTT  -  CATCH-22
SACHA BARON COHEN  -  THE SPY
RUSSELL CROWE   - THE LOUDEST VOICE
JARED HARRIS -   CHERNOBYL
SAM ROCKWELL  -  FOSSE/VERDON
Who will and should win: Jared Harris
I wouldn't mind Rockwell winning, even though I didn't care for Fosse/Verdon but I think Chernobyl is the stronger contender.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
PATRICIA ARQUETTE  - THE ACT
HELENA BONHAM CARTER  -  THE CROWN
TONI COLLETTE  -  UNBELIEVABLE
MERYL STREEP  -  BIG LITTLE LIES
EMILY WATSON  -  CHERNOBYL
Who will win: Meryl Streep
Who should win: Any, really.
Streep was great in BLL and I don't think the HFPA can resist giving her the win here. I think all of these actresses were really great in their shows. Yes, even Arquette who I normally don't care for. Loved her in The Act.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
ALAN ARKIN  -  THE KOMINSKY METHOD
KIERAN CULKIN  -  SUCCESSION
ANDREW SCOTT  -  FLEABAG
STELLAN SKARSGÃ…RD  -  CHERNOBYL
HENRY WINKLER -  BARRY
Who will and should win: Andrew Scott
I'd love if Culkin or Skarsgard won too but I'm going to guess Fleabag wins big and Scott along with it. Hot Priest is love, Hot Priest is life.

  1. I haven’t seen any of the tv shows and feel bad for the original tv studios because they don’t stand a chance against all these pay tv spots. Anyhoo, I haven’t seen most of the films either which suck but typical. For some reason I hope Phoenix does not win for Joker. I don’t want Streep to win either. Bad of me, I know

    1. I hope Phoenix not only loses but also doesn't get an Oscar nom. Fuck that performance lol

  2. I am almost certain Pitt has Supporting Actor locked up. And I am so cool with that. Still haven't seen A Beautiful Day or Two Popes. I would die happy if Ana de Armas won anything. She is...the best!

    1. I just don't know yet for Supporting Actor, I'd say Pitt does have a good shot. Hanks was wonderful but he's also the only one getting nominated for that movie whereas OUATIH is getting multiple ones. You're probably right.

  3. Oh you know Aniston wins just so these starfuckers can cut to Pitt's reaction lol

  4. I'm not a fan of the Golden Globes considering how fucked up they are and that the HFPA are a bunch of creeps. Snubbing Greta Gerwig for Best Director is bullshit.

    1. Snubbing Marielle Heller is fucking egregious. I'm still not over it.

  5. I'm not big on award show season lately, but I love reading your thoughts. Even though Dern wasn't in Little Women a lot, I thought her performance was great. Marriage Story felt like a repeat of Renata from BLL.

    1. I liked her in Little Women too. I agree about Marriage Story feeling slightly Renata. It's like Renata but nice lol
