The Worst Films of 2019

I went back and forth on whether or not I was going to make a post on the worst movies I saw last year. I normally include them as an aside in my Top 10 posts, but at the time, I knew I was missing a handful of films that were way more worthy of the title "worst" than the ones I had saved.  Seeing as we're now in the midst of a global pandemic, what better time than to get rid of the trash?

Now remember, my worsts are always films I went into expecting to at least like a little bit. Cats isn't here for that very reason.

10)Yesterday - I was really looking forward to this and I still can't believe a Danny Boyle movie could be this bad. What was this supporting cast? Stop putting Ed Sheran in things..

9) Glass - Why do we keep giving M. Night Shaymalan chances? Why did I give him another chance? What a waste.

8) The Lion King - Animated Lion King all day every day. This was souless garbage.

7) Last Christmas - I underestimate just how bad this movie was going to be. Sure, the trailer gave it ALL away but I was not prepared for just how much they wink wink nudged nudged the "twist" throughout. The actors in this film deserve better because this could've been a cute holiday movie.

6) The Laundromat - If there was an award for "worst narrators" this film would win it.

5) Brightburn - A cool concept that went completely wasted and ended atrociously.

4) Light of my Life - I technically didn't mean to get this DVD from Netflix, but I did and I watched and a survival movie in a world where women are dying lead by Casey Affleck is not for me.

3) High Life - I thought this was going to be an interesting sci fi movie, but it was really a study on sex and a dumb exercise in misery. I know the internet loves Robert Pattinson right now, but he just does not do it for me. He's not bad, he's just dull.

2) Joker - I know you're not shocked at Joker's inclusion but you probably are shocked that it isn't my number one.

1) Under the Silver Lake - What the fuck was this movie about?!

  1. I want to see the Christmas one even though I know the whole thing. It probably is good to turn off your brain. I am with you about Joker..hate that manipulative movie.

    1. Sorry, I got to ask but how is Joker manipulative? Everything negative I read about that movie, for the most part - The Scorsese rip offs can't be denied for one, and I guess I can see how some could perceive it as glorifying... well, I'm not sure.. what am I missing on that one? Honestly, I want to know what logic people see behind that thought cos I really don't get it) - but manipulative? Is that a part of the glorifying aspect of it all?

Don't take this the wrong way, I enjoyed the film as holding a mirror to today's society, which surely is just a valid way to view it. I just enjoy good discussion about movies :)

    2. Last Christmas isn't a terrible watch, it's just very poorly written. At least the actors were good.

    3. As for Joker being manipulative, I can't speak for Birgit but it is a film that certainly wants you to think it's smarter than it really is. lol

  2. Wow, High Life?? I had to watch that over and over, I love a good mindfuck movie and sci-fi mixed in with that, all the better for me! I thought the concept of sending prisoners into space was pretty interesting at least.

    And I love Binoche :D

The Laundromat was my guilty pleasure of last year. I can understand Oldman's narration being irritating for suuuure, but Banderas?? Cmoooon you know you love his smooooth accent/voice :P

Joker - well, see my other comment. I'm trying to get my head around the exact reasons for people to hate that movie so much.

Under The Silver Lake - I thought the same thing after one viewing, but give it another shot! Its really one of those flicks you see in a totally different light on subsequent viewings. The posters on the main guy's wall for example are a hint as to what the rest of it means, IMO at least.

As for Brightburn, Light of my Life and Yesterday, god yes they were terrible. I never walk out on movies, but jeez Brightburn had me as close as I've ever felt!

And god its good to read someone who sees Glass (and Split too maybe) as horrid. Probably for different reasons tho, it was just stupid and laughable but I know a couple of people with DOD and both those movies just took the concept and borderline made fun of it. Thats me though given how I have seen that disorder myself.

Overall, interesting list. Apart from those you listed I can't think of anything I really disliked off the top of my head. I even liked the Pikachu movie.

Ah! Captain Marvel, that'd be right up there for me. From my viewpoint it seemed somehow lazier than the rest of the Marvel movies, with an awfully predictable ending too.

As I said before though I like discussion, direct opposing viewpoints can make for interesting movie talk I reckon

    1. Split was massively overrated, IMO. I thought the actors were good but I didn't find it as amazing as all the reviews lead me to believe. With Glass, I walked away actually rooting for Glass which I know wasn't the desired intent, but the group of people running this hospital were so lame how could you not.

  3. Do you have any from this year that has irked ya? So far I haven't but I tend to avoid movies I kinda know I'm not going to like a lot.

    1. I haven't seen enough 2020 releases yet, so far only The Last Thing He Wanted was a new watch I didn't like.

  4. I thought Glass was alright. It wasn't perfect but it had its moments. I definitely will not watch The Lion King remake. I have no interest in it. Yes, Ed Sheeran sucks. His music is rubbish and he's a no-talent ginger. And people bitched about Mick Hucknall of Simply Red. I'm so glad my dad wasn't alive to see Yesterday, he probably would hate it as he loves the Beatles but would find the song choices to be uninspiring. I'm so dreading to see that film in its entirety due to my love for Danny Boyle.

    1. I liked how they handled the Beatles music in Yesterday for the most part but I was just blown away at how bad everyone side from the two lead actors were in it.

  5. Cats is one of The Worst Films of 2019 too

    1. It probably is. I haven't seen it yet.

    2. See it, review it and don't recommend it

  6. Joker is way worse than that incomprehensible Garfield wanders around movie, for one it's just infuriating such a piece of shit has a cult built around that the Academy is a part of lol

    1. The Academy love for that film is definitely reprehensible but the deciding factor to me was a coherent plot. Phillips might be a bad director but his film was easy to follow. Silver Lake was....a choice.

  7. The Lion King was such a disappointment. Not every movie should have a remake.

    1. I agree, especially when the cartoon still holds up. I get Dumbo...but Lion King? Nope.

  8. I actually liked six of your picks (to varying degrees) . LOL! :)

    1. I knew you'd like one but SIX?! lmao

To be fair, there probably is far worse films out there than what I chose, but this is what I landed on.

  9. Hi, Britt! I agree with you on a lot, but yeah, I'm one of the mouth-breathers who loves Joker. And I liked Brightburn. Sigh.

    1. I wouldn't call everyone who likes Joker a mouth breather because that would include a decent amount of my online film friends lol

  10. Under the Lake was so ... what was that indeed?
