Thursday Movie Picks: Bad Boys

Ah, those irresistible men that we're not supposed to be attracted to, but are. This week Wanderer wants us to take a look at films where bad boys play a big role. Here's what I came up with

1) 10 Things I Hate About You

Patrick Verona is THE bad boy, at least for someone my age. Heath Ledger played him perfectly in what is still one of my favorite rom coms of all times.

2) The Last Jedi

Ahh Kylo Ren. This second film in the new trilogy is really what gave this bad boy all the layers we needed to see that made him one of the most interesting characters in all of Star Wars canon. I'm still upset about how TROS ruined everything, but at least I'll always have TLJ.

3) A Streetcare Named Desire

Stanley Kowalski is a "bad boy" but as much as I like this movie, I have no idea why Stella is with him. He was a raging douchebag.

  1. I really liked 10 Things I Hate About You which is really quite good which was surprising to me. I hang my head low because I saw the first of this last trilogy or was it 4 films..I’m losing count. I know this character really irritated me in the first film. Oh how I agree with you about Streetcar. This is a great film/play but Stanley is an asshole and his wife needs to leave him. How often do we see this in real life.

    1. Exactly! 5 minutes with that dude would've been enough for me to be like nooooooooooooope.

  2. 10 Things I Hate About You is such a pleasing little film, even with the completely resistible Julia Stiles. The work of Ledger and JGL and the tweaking of the basic idea outweigh her blandness.

Great catch with Streetcar! Stella's tie to Stanley is a sort of sexual enslavement, he's always referring to getting those colored lights going, that she apparently can't break. The audience is left wondering at the end but I think she took him back eventually because she couldn't muster the courage to sever that connection.

Never saw Last Jedi and more than likely never will. I barely made it through the first three!

I went literal this week with a small theme.

Bad Boy (1935)-Pool shark Eddie Nolan (James Dunn) would like nothing better than to spend his time shaking down suckers and shooting the breeze with the other sharks. But he loves Sally Larkin (Dorothy Wilson) whose parents think him a bad boy wastrel and refuse until he has a reputable job. Eddie tries the straight and narrow but is unable to find a place. Driven to despair he contemplates whether he has anything to live for. Fast paced programmer, under an hour, definitely foreshadows Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

Bad Boy (1949)-Bad boy delinquent Danny (Audie Murphy) has a raft of charges against him but the judge decides to give him one more chance and sends to the reform school Variety Ranch run by caring Marshall & Maud Brown (Lloyd Nolan & Jane Wyatt) to see if he is capable of redemption. With an enormous chip on his shoulder tough nut Danny may prove to be more than even the Browns can handle.

Bad Boys (1983)-Bad boy delinquent Mick O'Brien (Sean Penn) is sent to juvenile hall after accidentally killing rival gang leader, Paco Moreno’s (Esai Morales) young brother when a con he’s running goes wrong. In the brutal prison Mick finds himself instant adversaries with the vicious Viking (Clancy Brown) and Tweety (Robert Lee Rush). While Mick fights for survival inside Paco plans to take revenge on those close to Mick, including his girlfriend J.C. (Ally Sheedy).

    1. All those Bad Boys and you didn't even pick the Will Smith one lol. I like your theme, though I haven't seen any.

Stella probably did take him back which is a damn shame. She should've ran.

  3. I have seen the first and third movies - good ones for the theme! Never got into Star Wars, but the character sounds intriguing.

My entry @ The Doglady's Den

  4. Kylo deserved better than what he got in TROS. Thank goodness for The Last Jedi and Rian Johnson and yes, Patrick Verona is awesome and we all miss Heath Ledger.

  5. Ah, of course Ren is here :)

  6. I've seen all.
    10 Things is such a 90s classic.
Have yet to see TROS, but I think I prefer Kylo Ren in the first one.
Streetcar, I suppose she is just stuck with him. Divorce is probably not much of an option in the 50s.

  7. 10 Things I Hate About You is my favourite.. and it's the saddest thing I can't watch it because I haven't seen a Ledger movie since.. like.. haven't rewatched them since you know. It's the worst feeling ever. I have thought about making a challenge for myself to watch all Ledger's movies but like, do I want to cry for a month!?
Kylo Ren is only good because Adam Driver is good. Haven't seen the last one......

    1. I've been thinking about that a lot with Anton Yelchin recently because I realized there's still a lot of films of his I haven't seen. I think I've seen most of Ledgers.
