Thursday Movie Picks: Spoofs, Satires, and Mockumentaries

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves lets us choose between spoofs, satires, or mockumentaries. There was once a time where spoofs were everywhere but achieving greatness with either of these three topics is very hard to pull off. I decided to take one film from each category to talk about.

1) Scary Movie

For my spoof, I go with this. Granted, these movies got terrible after the first two but it will never take away how hysterical the first Scary Movie was. This is how you do a great spoof. You can tell once they hit the 3rd one and had to start pulling from non horror films that they were seriously running out of ideas.

2) Jojo Rabbit

For my satire one of the best movies from 2019 is an easy pick. Jojo Rabbit is my favorite satire of all time (It was Tropic Thunder before this) I love everything about this movie.

3) 7 Days in Hell

Mockumentaries aren't as popular as the other two but this short one that Andy Samberg and Kit Harington did for HBO about a tennis rivalry is amazingly absurd.

Comments

  1. 7 Days in Hell is freaking hilarious, probably because it's so short. I had little patience for Popstar and Hot Rod

    1. I think the run time played a huge part too, which was nice. I still laugh at "he's going down on her and now they're high fiving!" and Kit standing in the corner.

  2. 7 Days in Hell was awesome! I had mixed feelings about Jojo Rabbit, and haven't seen Scary Movie but might give it a try.

  3. 7 Days in Hell was funny and goofy. Scary Movie was just dumb. I haven't seen Jojo Rabbit.

I hadn't planned it but my three all turned out to be mockumentaries from the British Isles.

A Hard Day’s Night (1964)-John, Paul, George and Ringo portray themselves in this skewed view of “a day in the life” of The Beatles as they enjoy their first brush with fame and the craziness that went along with it. Just this side of reality the film takes you for a fun ride with the lads from Liverpool who sell this by being so effortlessly appealing.

The Big Tease (1999)-Scottish hairdresser Crawford Mackenzie (Craig Ferguson) dreams of leaving his small village to compete at the World Hairdresser International Federation annual contest and winning the coveted Platinum Scissors Award. It looks like his wish is about to become a reality when he receives an invitation. Determined to immortalize his shining moment for posterity he heads for the contest in LA with a documentary crew but comes crashing down to earth when he finds he was only invited as an observer. Unwilling to be cowed and with the help of PR agent Candy (Frances Fisher) he pursues his goal with relentless zeal all recorded by his tagalong crew.

Confetti (2006)-Faux documentary follows three couples as they battle for the coveted title of Confetti magazine’s “Most Original Wedding of the Year” along with a house and a cover shoot. Fitness enthusiasts Josef & Isabelle (Meredith MacNeill and Stephen Mangan) want a tennis-themed wedding. Romantic movie fans Matt & Sam's (Jessica Stevenson and Martin Freeman) are determined to have a ceremony inspired by Hollywood musicals. Finally naturalists Michael & Joanna (Robert Webb and recent Oscar winner Olivia Colman) want their big day to a celebration of the great outdoors with Michael adamantly insisting that he be nude during the ceremony. Hit and miss but funny overall.

    1. A Hard Day's Night is one I would like to see. I haven't seen your other picks but Confetti's cast is grabbing my attention. I'll have to look up both of them.

      Highly recommend Jojo Rabbit!

  4. Ah... three awesome films. Kudos to Jojo Rabbit as that is an amazing film. 7 Days in Hell... how can anyone not laugh at that? My dad thought it was hilarious as he admits to not being fond of tennis (he found it to be boring) but enjoyed the hell out of it to the point that he almost thought it was real.

    1. I don't care for Tennis either but that was so much fun. I'm sure it's not too far from home for a few players lol

  7. Hey I picked one film from each category too, and we share a movie with Taika in it. JoJo Rabbit is a brilliant satire. Now I'm curious about 7 Days in hell!

  8. I need to 7 Days in Hell in the worst way. It looked so f--king absurd, I'm pretty sure it will be my absolute jam.

The original Scary Movie is wild. Too bad they go so off the rails as they go.

  10. I tried watching Scary Movie, way back when it first went on DVD...I just found it dumb rather than funny. Maybe one of these days I'd try again.
