Review: The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) take on one of the most difficult cases yet after a routine exorcism ends up being something deeper.

I was late to the Conjuring trilogy, but I can still safely say the first film is one of the best horror films in recent memory. The second film was very strong too. It was just unsettling. There is that constant feeling of dread and not knowing what's going to happen next. The 3rd installment starts out that way, but then quickly turns into something generic that lacks the magic of the previous films.

What made the first two films so scary were the things we couldn't see. I still think that scene in the first film with Joey King and Mackenzie Foy in their bedroom, staring into the dark corner is one of the scariest things in the entire franchise. This film doesn't have that. It's assigned an actual speaking villain, and it lifts so many shots from other iconic horror films that it becomes distracting.

James Wan not coming back to this was a mistake. Director Michael Chaves just isn't able to capture the feeling that made these films so popular. There are so many illogical choices going on, the only thing that really keeps the film going are the actors.

I don't think this film is terrible, it's just very clearly not as good as the ones that came before it.

  1. Exactly. I couldn't say it any better. It's not terrible, just clearly inferior to the first 2.

    1. Oh yes, and nothing is ever going to unseat that first one. That was remarkable.

  2. I haven't seen any of the Conjuring movies, can't even get past the trailer, too scary! I didn't know James Wan didn't do this one, I guess he's gone to much bigger movies/franchises now.
