Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Fish Out of Water

This week's TV theme from Wandering Through The Shelves are for those who just don't quite fit in. I've been pretty excited for this week because I was saving one of my favorite new shows for it. Here's what I came up with.

1) Ted Lasso -
I cannot describe how much I love Ted Lasso. This show is so wholesome, sweet, and absolutely hysterical at the same time. I'm so glad I started watching it. I just hate that it's on Apple TV and I'll have to pay to watch the second season after my free trial runs out. Football coach Ted moving to England and coaching soccer, a sport he knows nothing about is very out of his element.

2) The Great -
I was somewhat interested in this Hulu show where Elle Fanning takes on the role of Catherine The Great, but when I finally started watching I was faced with something so unexpectedly funny. I was not prepared for the tone this has. It's wonderful and Catherine is so adaptable to her new surroundings. Huzzah!

3) The Fresh Prince of Bel Air -
Since I went with two new shows I had to finish it off with a classic move from West Philadelphia to California. This was the first thing that came to mind.

  1. I have heard so many great things about Ted Lasso. I plan on watching it when I finish with Workaholics.

  2. The only one I've seen is Fresh Prince and I'm not a big fan. I liked Will Smith more once he moved into features.

The other two sound worth checking out if I had access to them but I don't think I do.

I also went with my first thought, a show that is the very definition of fish out of water shows and two from my childhood.

Northern Exposure (1990-1995)-Fresh from his residency at a big city hospital native New Yorker Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) discovers he is contractually obligated due to a student loan agreement to practice in Alaska for the next four years. Expecting to be on staff in Anchorage he is livid when he discovers that instead he is assigned to the remote village of Cicely. Once he arrives, he finds the residents a unique idiosyncratic lot totally foreign to Joel’s New York sensibilities.

My Favorite Martian (1963-1966)-During a ride around the universe a Martian’s (Ray Walston) spaceship nearly collides with a NASA rocket causing it to crash land in the hills near L.A. where he is discovered by young reporter Tim O’Hara (Bill Bixby). At first eager for a story Tim gives the Martian shelter while he works to repair his ship and passes him off as his Uncle Martin. They become buddies as Martin tries to both adapt to earthly norms and avoid the sweet but ditzy landlady Mrs. Lorelei Brown (Pamela Britton) from finding out the truth.

Green Acres (1965-1971)-Successful New York attorney Oliver Douglas (Eddie Albert) decides to chuck big city life and move to a broken-down farm in Hooterville along with his extremely glamorous but very reluctant Hungarian wife Lisa (Eva Gabor). Silly bit of ridiculousness (they lived in a penthouse apartment in New York but can’t afford to fix up the shack of a house in the country? He farms in a three-piece suit while she wanders around the dilapidated hovel in satin and feathers) is put over by the talent of its stars and a willful suspension of belief.

    1. I haven't seen any of your picks this week, but I'm at least familiar with all of them.

Ted Lasso is definitely worth paying the $4.99 for Apple TV for a month to binge it. I cannot say enough great things about that show. The Great is on Hulu, which I usually pick up and drop quite often to watch other things, but I prefer Ted Lasso of the two.

  3. The Fresh Prince is a great show to match on. Haven't seen either of your other picks. Haven't even heard of The Great, and I have Hulu. Hmph.

  5. I haven't seen Ted Lassor nor The Great but I do hope to real soon as I think the former is something my dad would've liked since he is a futbol fan. Of course, who hasn't seen The Carlton Show.

After yesterday, I now truly believe that I have a shot with Loki. :) Plus, I love Frigga even more. BEST MCU MOM EVER!!!!!

    1. Oh I know, I loved hearing Loki talk about her. It makes me appreciate when they brought her back in Endgame even more. "Eat a salad"

I think you'd love Ted Lasso, it's so funny.

    2. Part of me hopes that Rene Russo makes an appearance as Frigga in Love & Thunder telling young Thor and Loki a story that would play into events that would be crucial to the plot. Maybe in season 2 of Loki, they could find a variant of Frigga and Odin and maybe have Odin become the father he should've been and Frigga be more of the ultimate badass. I would've loved for both Thor and Loki go... "Yes mommy".

  6. I feel the same about Ted Lasso. I absolutely love the show but I hate that I'll have to pay to see season 2 as my trial expires mid July. I'll probably wait a bit and watch both season 2 of Ted Lasso and The Morning Show in the same month.

    1. Mine expires at the beginning of August, so I'll probably get like 3 episodes then have to wait. I really liked The Morning Show as well. I'll definitely wait until that's all aired to buy it again and binge.

  7. The Fresh Prince is a brilliant pick!

  8. Nice picks! Ted Lasso is the only reason I've kept Apple+. I can't wait for the second season. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a great choice too. Will should've been nominated for more Emmys.

  9. I want to watch The Great. Since we don't get Hulu, hopefully it gets added to DisneyPlus.
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was also one that came immediately to mind, but I had decided to go for more recent watches.
