Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Friends To Lovers

It's another TV week at Wandering Through The Shelves and I don't know about you, but I love a good "friends to lovers" plot on my TV shows. This week I'm choosing shows that aren't necessarily my favorite, but ones where I shipped certain pairs very hard.

1) Agents of SHIELD -
Fitz and Simmons were clearly written to always be a "will they/won't they" couple and the actors' chemistry together really sent it over the edge. The show had a very annoying habit of throwing obstacles their way, but every time they reunited, it was a high point of the show.

2) The Walking Dead -
The way TWD handled couples is puzzling at best. The fact that Carol and Daryl never got together is preposterous. (but that's ageism for you)  However the one couple they absolutely did get right was Rick and Michonne. The actors sexual chemistry was off the charts and frankly, their upcoming spin off is the only thing that can get me interested in TWD again.

3) That 70's Show -
Eric and Donna were so cute! This show has been on my mind since Netflix is forcing so many ads for That 90's Show on me. I will not watch it, but I'll just think fondly of this couple.

  1. I haven't watched the 1st 2 but loved Thay 70s Show. Good Choice!

  2. I've heard of all three of these but the only one I watched sporadically was That 70's Show and not often enough to really know the characters.

The friend to lover thing isn't uncommon in shows but it stinks when they use it to prop up sagging viewing numbers rather than as an organic part of the story. I think these three did it the right way.

Castle (2009-2016) Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) is a best-selling novelist who convinces the mayor of New York to let him tag along on an investigation with homicide detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) who is unhappy about the situation. Eventually Castle become a sort of consultant and partner to Beckett and they progress from flinty friends to romantic partners.

Friends (1994-2004)-Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and Monica Geller (Courtney Cox) are two within a group of six long time friends with more quirks than you can shake a stick at who over the ten years of the series grow in ways that make their ultimate pairing believable.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-2021) -Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) started as police partners who had a jokey camaraderie that hinted at attraction and slowly grew to love (and eventual marriage and parenthood).

    1. I didn't watch any of these. I remember when Castle was very popular. I thought Brooklyn Nine-Nine looked awful when it first came out, but I heard so many wonderful things about it. Then I just never started it.

    2. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an absolute delight. All of the characters are great, and it's genuinely funny.

  3. I'm currently finishing up Elementary, which is kind of the opposite of this. Sherlock and Joan are completely dedicated to each other and are entirely platonic, and it's delightul.

  4. I need to watch the entirety of Agents of SHIELD as I've just been re-watching Ted Lasso all week as I've been ill for nearly a month now from that cold as I've been coughing badly for a week. I have seen That 90's Show and I think it's pretty good in its first season. I love Eric and Donna though we all know the endgame of That 70's Show is Jackie and Hyde but never happened because Danny Masterson is a douche.

  5. I’ve seen some episodes of all the shows.
I gave up on AoS after like 2 or 3 episodes but it was clear they were throwing Fitz and Simmons together from the beginning.
TWD, I actually do not sense the chemistry between Rick and Michonne at all, I was so surprised when they ended up together. Carol and Daryl yeah there is chemistry…but when nothing happened, I just thought maybe I was seeing it wrong…that Daryl might be gay and Carol I get the sense that she is just not interested in getting into any relationship, despite chemistry, after her daughter died and I think her dead husband was abusive wasn’t he. Anyway, I stopped watching like a season after Glenn died so no idea what happens after that.
I have yet to see 90s Show too because I just didn’t like the trailer I saw.

    1. Carol and Daryl not getting together was 100% ageism, IMO. If Melissa McBride had covered her grey hairs before filming, it would've happened. I guarantee it.

  6. I gotta watch Agents of SHIELD sometime - I think it's a show that I'd really enjoy

    1. It's all over the place. There are some things they do really well, like Ghost Rider and Hyrda, but other things they just absolutely flop on. I didn't even watch the last season.
