2012 Emmy Nominations

The 2012 Emmy nominations are in! As always, my thoughts will follow each category in green.

Best Drama Series

Boardwalk Empire
Breaking Bad
Downton Abbey
Game of Thrones
Homeland
Mad Men
No surprises here, though I thought Downton Abbey was considered a miniseries. I could be wrong. Either way, I'm thrilled for Breaking Bad and I truly hope it knocks off Mad Men as the Best Drama winner. *EDIT* I was right about Downton Abby being a miniseries last year, and I think it's bullshit they are allowed to switch like that. True Blood could've went there, in my opinion. It is a former Best Drama nominee.
Best Comedy Series
The Big Bang Theory
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Girls
Modern Family
30 Rock
Veep
Happy for The Big Bang Theory. I'm surprised that Girls made it in here, that show is TERRIBLE.

Best Leading Actor in a Drama Series
Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Damian Lewis, Homeland
BRYAN FUCKING CRANSTON!!! That's all I have to say. Emmy #4 will look nice next to Emmys 1-3.

Best Leading Actor in a Comedy Series
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Don Cheadle, House of Lies
Louis C.K., Louie
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
I think it's awesome Don Cheadle got in there. I don't get Showtime, but I'm waiting for that show to be available on Netflix so I can watch it. Cheadle is the only surprise, the rest are the usual suspects.

Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series
Kathy Bates, Harry's Law
Glenn Close, Damages
Claire Danes, Homeland
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men

Best Leading Actress in a Comedy SeriesZooey Deschanel, New Girl
Lena Dunham, Girls
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Melissa McCarthy,
Mike & MollyAmy Poehler, Parks & Recreation
A tie! I'm always happy when Zooey D gets some love. Again, I'm surprised with the Girls nomination. I know that show has it's fans, and I tried to watch it. I really did, but it was painful.

Best Miniseries or Movie
American Horror Story
Game Change
Hatfields & McCoys
Hemingway & Gellhorn
Luther
Sherlock

Best Leading Actor in a Miniseries or Movie
Woody Harrelson, Game Change
Clive Owen, Hemingway & Gellhorn
Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia (Masterpiece)
Idris Elba, Luther
Kevin Costner, Hatfields & McCoys
Bill Paxton, Hatfields & McCoys
Benedict Cumberbatch, Yay! Kevin Costner, No!
Best Leading Actress in a Miniseries or Movie
Julianne Moore, Game Change
Connie Britton, American Horror Story
Nicole Kidman, Hemingway & Gellhorn
Emma Thompson, The Song of Lunch (Masterpiece)
Ashley Judd, Missing
I could've sworn Missing was a TV show that was just cancelled after one season, not a miniseries. Can someone explain this to me? Anywho, the only miniseries I actually saw this year was Game Change, and all the actors did a very good job.

Best Reality Competition
The Amazing Race
Dancing With The Stars
Project Runway
So You Think You Can Dance
Top Chef
The Voice

Best Reality Host
Tom Bergeron, Dancing With The Stars
Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance
Phil Keoghan, The Amazing Race
Ryan Seacrest, American Idol
Betty White, Betty White's Off Their Rockers
Of course Betty White would get in there somehow.
Best Variety Program

The Colbert Report
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Jimmy Kimmel Live
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Real Time with Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
Giancarlo Esposito, Breaking Bad
Brendan Coyle, Downton Abbey
Jim Carter, Downton Abbey
Jared Harris, Mad Men
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
I briefly freaked this morning because I didn't think Paul and Esposito were nominated, thankfully I was wrong. I couldn't be happier for the Breaking Bad crew. They're the best show in television. I'm bummed not to see Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire) or Nelsan Ellis (True Blood) in here. I'm glad Dinklage made the cut.

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife
Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad
Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey
Joanna Froggatt, Downton Abbey
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
As much as I hate Skylar on Breaking Bad, I'm glad Anna Gunn finally got a nomination. The fact that I hate her character means she's going a fantastic job.
Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Ed O'Neill, Modern Family
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live
Max Greenfield, New Girl

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory
Merritt Wever, Nurse Jackie
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Kathryn Joosten, Desperate Housewives
I like Mayim Bialik on TBBT, but after reading the umpteenth  pretentious interview she gave about attachment parenting, it's actually made me like her less (not because I disagree with her methods, but because I think she came off as a total bully). I hope this doesn't ruin the next season of TBBT for me. I realize it's stupid to not like an actor for their outside persona, but sometimes you can't get past it on screen.
Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie
Sarah Paulson, Game Change
Frances Conroy, American Horror Story
Jessica Lange, American Horror Story
Judy Davis, Page Eight (Masterpiece)
Mare Winningham, Hatfields & McCoys
Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie
Ed Harris, Game Change
Denis O'Hare, American Horror Story
David Strathairn,
Hemingway & GellhornMartin Freeman, Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia (Masterpiece)
Tom Berenger, Hatfields & McCoys
Denis O'Hare!! I was really hoping he would've gotten nominated last year for his work in True Blood, but this is good enough. (come one, that news cast scene was hilarious)

Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
Dot-Marie Jones, Glee
Maya Rudolph, Saturday Night Live
Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live
Elizabeth Banks, 30 Rock
Margaret Cho, 30 Rock
Kathy Bates, Two and a Half Men
Maya Rudolph was my favorite SNL host this year. That Beyonce and Jay-Z skit was hilarious.

Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
Michael J. Fox, Curb Your Enthusiasm
Greg Kinnear, Modern Family
Bobby Cannavale, Nurse Jackie
Jimmy Fallon, Saturday Night Live
Will Arnett, 30 Rock
Jon Hamm, 30 Rock
They should make Will Arnett a regular on 30 Rock. This is like his 3rd nomination.

Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series
Martha Plimpton, The Good Wife
Loretta Devine, Grey's Anatomy
Jean Smart, Harry's Law
Julia Ormond, Mad Men
Joan Cusack, Shameless
Uma Thurman, Smash

Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Mark Margolis, Breaking Bad
Dylan Baker, The Good Wife
Michael J. Fox, The Good Wife
Jeremy Davies, Justified
Ben Feldman, Mad Men
Jason Ritter, Parenthood
Mark Margolis being in here is AWESOME. His character in Breaking Bad didn't speak, so he only had his facial expressions. They were fantastic.

Comments

  1. Makes sense that Hendricks got in when the series played the cheapest of tricks with her character this season. So happy for Elba and Luther and GoT best drama nod. Will Arnett should definetly be a regular on 30 rock! He is hilarious.

  2. I'm not a fan of Girls either, but after the first episode or two it did get a lot better.

It's definitely not for everyone, but I don't think it deserves all the hate it gets on the internet. Characters don't have to be likable to be complex and well-written.
