Final 2014 Oscar predictions: Who will win, who should win.

Alright, alright, alright. Let's get this guessing game going!

Best Picture

"American Hustle"
"Captain Phillips"
"Dallas Buyers Club"
"Gravity"
"Her"
"Nebraska"
"Philomena"
"12 Years A Slave"
"The Wolf of Wall Street"

Who will win and should win: 12 Years A Slave.

Sure, I technically liked Her, Wolf, and Hustle better than 12 years, but I can appreciate a well made film with an all around incredible cast that brought a lot to the table. I see it winning here.

Best Actor in a Leading Role

Christian Bale, "American Hustle"
Bruce Dern, "Nebraska"
Leonardo DiCaprio, "The Wolf of Wall Street"
Chiwetel Ejiofor, "12 Years A Slave"
Matthew McConaughey, "Dallas Buyers Club"

Who will win: Matthew McConaughey

Who should win: Leonardo DiCaprio

I'm not going to be mad when Matthew wins, but I really think Leo deserves this one. It's easily one of his best performances to date, plus McConaughey is going to get a ton of love at the Emmys next year for True Detective. Let Leo have this one.

Best Actress in a Leading Role

Amy Adams, "American Hustle"
Cate Blanchett, "Blue Jasmine"
Sandra Bullock, "Gravity"
Judi Dench, "Philomena"
Meryl Streep, "August: Osage County"

Who will win: Cate Blanchett

Who should win: Amy Adams

Cate was great in a rather lack-luster film, and Amy was great in a great film. Sure Cate's character had more to her, but I still love Adams the most.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Barkhad Abdi, "Captain Phillips"
Bradley Cooper, "American Hustle"
Michael Fassbender, "12 Years A Slave"
Jonah Hill, "The Wolf of Wall Street"
Jared Leto, "Dallas Buyers Club"

Who will and should win: Jared Leto has this in the bag, but I would not be upset if any of these men took home the big award. Not at all.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

Sally Hawkins, "Blue Jasmine"
Jennifer Lawrence, "American Hustle"
Lupita Nyong'o, "12 Years A Slave"
Julia Roberts, "August: Osage County"
June Squibb, "Nebraska

Who will and should win: Lupita Nyong'o. Part of me is still afraid that they will give this to Jennifer Lawrence, but I'm going to take the big leap to say that the Academy will get it right.

Best Director

David O. Russell, "American Hustle"
Alfonso Cuaron, "Gravity"
Alexander Payne, "Nebraska"
Steve McQueen, "12 Years A Slave"
Martin Scorsese, "The Wolf Of Wall Street"
Who will win: Alfonso Cuaron
Who should win: Steve McQueen
I know, Gravity was beatiful and all, but it was mostly due to the visuals. 12 Years A Slave had a lot of heart, which is why I want Steve to win here.
Best Animated Feature
"The Croods"
"Despicable Me 2"
"Ernest & Celestine"
"Frozen"
"The Wind Rises"
Who will win: Frozen. This isn't even a competition. Does it deserve to win? Who knows. I haven't seen any of these.
Best Foreign Language Film
"The Broken Circle Breakdown"
"The Great Beauty"
"The Hunt"
"The Missing Picture"
"Omar"
Who will and should win: The Hunt. Fantastic film that cannot be ignored.
Best Documentary
"The Act of Killing"
"Cutie & The Boxer"
"Dirty Wars"
"The Square"
"Twenty Feet From Stardom"
Who will win: The Act of Killing. I haven't seen any of these, so I don't know which one "should" win. *cough* Blackfish *cough*
Best Original Screenplay
"American Hustle"
"Blue Jasmine"
"Dallas Buyers Club"
"Her"
"Nebraska"
Who will win: American Hustle
Who should win: Her
The Hustle bandwagon is in full force, and while I loved it, Her was far more original.
Best Adapted Screenplay
"Before Midnight"
"Captain Phillips"
"Philomena"
"12 Years A Slave"
"The Wolf of Wall Street"
Who will and should win: 12 Years A Slave
Best Original Score
"The Book Thief"
"Gravity"
"Her"
"Philomena"
"Saving Mr. Banks"
Who will win: Gravity
Who should win: Her.
The music in Her was just perfect.
Best Original Song
"All Yet Not Alone" - Alone Yet Not Alone
"Happy" - Despicable Me 2
"Let It Go" - Frozen
"The Moon Song" - Her
"Ordinary Love" - Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Who will win: Frozen
Who should win: Her
Best Editing
"American Hustle"
"Captain Phillips"
"Dallas Buyers Club"
"Gravity"
"12 Years A Slave"
Who will and should win: Gravity
Best Cinematography
"The Grandmaster"
"Gravity"
"Inside Llewyn Davis"
"Nebraska"
"Prisoners"
Who will win: Gravity
Who should win: Prisoners.
Hear me out. Gravity was visually stunning, but it was digital. Gravity is beautiful because of a computer, where as Prisoners was beautiful because the cinematographer made it so. He made Atlanta, GA look exactly like Pennsylvania. I go back and forth on the cinematography award all of the time. As beautiful as Gravity was, I can't get behind it fully on a cinematography stand point..
Best Production Design
"American Hustle"
"Gravity"
"The Great Gatsby"
"Her"
"12 Years A Slave"
Who will win: American Hustle
Who should win: Her
Best Costume Design
"American Hustle"
"The Grandmaster"
"The Great Gatsby"
"The Invisible Woman"
"12 Years A Slave"
Who will and should win: American Hustle
Best Makeup
"Dallas Buyers Club"
"Jackass: Bad Grandpa"
"The Lone Ranger"
Who will and should win: Dallas Buyers Club
Best Sound Editing
"All Is Lost"
"Captain Phillips"
"Gravity"
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug"
"Lone Survivor"
Who will win: Captain Phillips
Who should win: Gravity
Best Sound Mixing
"Captain Phillips"
"Gravity"
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug"
"Inside Llewyn Davis"
"Lone Survivor"
Who will and should win Gravity. (I'm obviously torn on who's going to take sound and sound mixing between Gravity and Captain Phillips)
Best Visual Effects
"Gravity"
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug"
"Iron Man 3"
"The Lone Ranger"
"Star Trek Into Darkness"
Who will win: Gravity
Who should win: Star Trek Into Darkness. Because I'm a nerd.
The next three categories I will not be predicting because I have no fucking clue and I haven't seen any.
Best Live-Action Short
"Aquel No Era Yo (That Wasn't Me)"
"Avant Que De Tout Perdre (Just Before Losing Everything)"
"Helium"
"Pitääkö Mun Kaikki Hoitaa? (Do I Have to Take Care of Everything?)"
"The Voorman Problem"
Best Animated Short
"Feral"
"Get a Horse!"
"Mr. Hublot"
"Possessions"
"Room on the Broom"
Best Documentary Short
"CaveDigger"
"Facing Fear"
"Karama Has No Walls"
"The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life"
"Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall"

  1. I'm still holding out that somehow, some way, Tom Hanks will win Best Actor. Fingers crossed.

Seriously, though. I'm fully down with most of your picks. I enjoyed your explanation of Best cinematography. Clearly, you know that's an uphill battle, turning that tide.

    1. I always have such a dilemma with cinematography. I wanted to kill my TV when Avatar actually won it.

  2. I still can't believe that 'Blackfish' wasn't nominated in the documentary category. Whatever side people come down on, that was a well done documentary. For best picture, I'm still rooting for 'Gravity.' I just loved that film, but I know it won't win. I'm also rooting for Sandra, but I know she won't win again, at least not for this film.

I'm also rooting AGAINST Jennifer Lawrence winning again. She certainly wasn't good enough in American Hustle for a double win. I still don't think she should have won for 'Silver Linings Playbook.'

    1. I love Jennifer Lawrence, but I hate to say I'm kind of rooting against her too. Her performance in Hustle is overrated. At the time, I thought she deserved the Oscar for SLP last year, but then I saw The Impossible, and that really should've been Naomi Watts'.

  3. No shorts predictions? ;) I REALLY hope The Hunt wins, but I couldn't bring myself to predict it.

    1. I haven't seen any of them! I rarely do in the Short category. I really hope The Hunt wins too!

  4. i really really liked blue jasmine and the entire cast, far more than anything in american hustle. The Wind Rises is a better film to be than frozen (by a long shot), but obviously frozen is more popular. i love lupita and jared too (tho both their categories are generally pretty good). I do like the idea of Cuaron winning :)

    1. I just can't do Woody Allen movies. I try so hard! I'm actually kind of sick of seeing Frozen everywhere, despite not having actually seen it.

  5. Most things are locked up, apart from supporting actress. I'm predicting Lupita Nyong'o.

    We'll see though.
