Thursday Movie Picks: Kids Movies Adults Would Enjoy

This week Wander asks us to pick non animated children movies that adults would enjoy. When I first saw that theme, I thought it was going to be so hard. Then I realized it was actually harder to narrow it down to three. The only rule I made for myself was that I couldn't use Shirley Temple movies, because then I would just use all Shirley Temple movies. Here are my favorites:

1) The Santa Claus
The sequels were all terrible, but I have very fond memories of watching this film as a kid. I watched it again this Christmas and it still holds up. Plus I could watch that scene where the step dad gets the weenie whistle over and over and over again.

2) Hocus Pocus

I think I've watched movie once a year ever since it was made, so I know for sure that adults can enjoy this one too. It's ridiculous fun, and it's also the only Sarah Jessica Parker performance I've ever liked.

3) The Secret Garden
This last one was hard, I almost went with A Little Princess, but I figured I'd see that one pop up in other places more than Secret Garden, so I went with this one. It's still very enjoyable for an adult. Beautiful scenery, and a very sweet story.

  1. I haven't seen your first two...but I love The Secret Garden (and A Little Princess!) I recently read The Secret Garden (the original novel) to my daughter...it's so beautiful. Great pick(s)!

    1. Wow, really? The first two seem like such holiday staples. I'd like to read The Secret Garden. That would be a beautiful novel.

  2. Wow, three movies I haven't seen in twenty years. I was wondering how Hocus Pocus would hold up. Good job.

  3. Dang, girl! You straight up reached into the vault. I don't know why neither The Santa Claus nor Hocus Pocus dawned on me. Both great, great picks! And movies I still love.

  4. I LOVE The Santa Clause (one of my favorite Christmas movies, along with one of my picks) and The Secret Garden is just perfection. Hocus Pocus is just pure silliness. In a good way.

    1. Hocus Pocus used to make me jealous that my parents never left me home alone to go to parties that went on late into the night. lol

  5. I saw the Santa Clause in the theatre on its initial release with my sister's kids specifically because it looked like something that I could tolerate and that they would still enjoy and I was right I did really enjoy it. You're also right about the sequels being bad.

Hocus Pocus is cute but even with my love of Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy , I share your aversion for SJP, it isn't something I watch very often.

This version of The Secret Garden is beautiful, I picked it for the YA week theme, and terrific pick, have you ever seen the earlier version with Margaret O'Brien? It's a very good rendering of the story as well.

I have a soft spot for Shirley Temple too. I don't love all of her films but The Little Princess, Heidi, Stowaway and Poor Little Rich Girl are still favorites also I can't pass by Bright Eyes without stopping and watching to the end no matter where it is in the film! I love The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer as well but that's really a whole different Shirl all grown up plus that one has Cary Grant and Myrna Loy to add to its appeal.

    1. I haven't seen the earlier version of The Secret Garden, only this one. Yeah, I have a major soft spot for Shirley. I love the ones you mentioned. Captain January, Susannah and the Mounties, and Just Around The Corner are ones I'm a sucker for as well.

  7. Showing my age, this week. A lot of picks this week are early/mid 90s flicks. That's just before I had kids. Just wasn't watching most G or PG rated stuff at the time. Obviously, I missed a lot, including all three of these.

    1. All three of these came out in 93-94, when I was 6-7, so I definitely took from ones I remember watching young. It's probably when I started watching movies that weren't cartoons.

  8. I'm definitely with you on the first especially - it is kind of special. Maybe Christmas movies just fall into another category altogether because we all want the magic now matter how old we are.

  10. Oh, those are amazing films. I agree with you on The Santa Clause as the first film was fun but its sequels were just fucking horrendous. Starz actually at one point, did a 24-hour marathon of the one w/ Martin Short on Xmas. What the fuck?
