Thursday Movie Picks: Love Triangles

The final Valentine's Day theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is something I cannot stand: Love triangles. I fucking hate love triangles. Most of the time they're so unbelievable and plot driven. Then the person I want to be the winner usually loses. It was hard to find three movies with love triangles that didn't piss me off, but I think I found an eclectic trio.

1) There's Something About Mary

Okay, so there ends up being more people involved in this then just Healy and Ted. But I love this film, it's one of my favorite comedies. I remember video taping it on Starz when I was about 12 or 13 and labeling it something else so my parents didn't know I had it. There fault for letting me have a TV in my room.

2) Y Tu Mamá También

This is actually a very beautiful story and the three leads have an insane amount of chemistry.

3) The Dreamers

Okay, so two of these are brother and sister. They go half Lannister, I get it. But this movie is really worth seeing. I love watching movies about other film fans. It's fascinating. (Though I disagree with their statement that movie lovers like to sit in the front. Back row, aisle seat, please.)

  1. I think Mary is hilarious and there are so many triangles in this film. THANKFULLY I will never use her hair gel. I haven't seen the other two but I have been interested in seeing the second film

    1. There's practically a love hexagon in that movie. Yeah, I don't use hair gel either. After this film, I don't think I ever could. lol

  2. Great picks! I almost chose There's Something About Mary myself.

  3. Love these! The Dreamers is such an underrated movie, and Y Tu Mama Tambien is a masterpiece!

    1. I know I used Dreamers last year too, but I couldn't skip it. It's hard for me to find movies I actually enjoy with love triangles.

  4. Y tu Mama Tambien is perfect. Great pick there. Haven't seen the other two. That's really sad in the case of Mary because I own it on DVD and have for years. As for my seat preference, dead center.

  5. "They go half Lannister" LOL. I can't believe I forgot about The Dreamers. Y Tu Mama Tambien is SO great - so unique and special.

Something About Mary - I haven't seen it since it came out but.... GIGGLE. It's such "sophomoric" humor but even thinking about it makes me laugh.

    1. It still probably holds up pretty well to the raunchy comedies we're used to getting now. I'm laughing to myself over the "how did you get the zipper all the way to the top" line now.

  6. Mary is some wild ride but better as a community view. I remember seeing it in a packed theatre when it came out and it was uproarious but looked at it later along and not so much.

Y Tu Mamá También is an ideal choice for this, a very good film.

I didn't care much for The Dreamers but it fits well here.

I went with lighter fare for the week though my last one has its share of heartache.

This Means War (2012)-Two CIA secret agents (Chris Pine & Tom Hardy) best friends and roommates go all out in their competition when they discover they have fallen for the same woman (Reese Witherspoon). The three actors work hard to buoy this with their personality and charisma. One problem: Tom Hardy and Chris Pine’s chemistry with each other is much stronger than either share with Reese. The director's roots in music videos are painfully obvious and he does nothing to smooth out the many kinks in the borderline creepy plot.

Keeping the Faith (2000)-A triangle with a twist. Two men-a priest and a rabbi (Edward Norton & Ben Stiller), friends since childhood, fall for the same woman (Jenna Elfman). She is likewise a friend from their youth newly returned to town. The various conflicts the situation presents make up the bulk of the film.

Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)-Working class high schooler Keith (Eric Stoltz) longs to date the most popular girl in school Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson) and his best friend, the tomboyish Watts (Mary Stuart Masterton), tries to help at first. Once he makes the date though she realizes she’s jealous. Add in that Amanda’s ex-boyfriend, jackass rich boy Hardy (Craig Sheffer), resents being replaced by someone he sees as inferior and plots revenge. All the pieces are now in place for a big showdown. If the plot sounds somewhat familiar it’s because this was written by the prolific king of 80’s teen angst John Hughes. Good performances all around.

    1. I've only seen Keeping the Faith, which I remember enjoying in high school, but I haven't seen it since. I've seen Som eKind of Wonderful on another list, that one sounds interesting. This Means War didn't look good to me at all.

      Thanks for sharing!

  7. I dig your picks, though I've never seen Y Tu Mama...I'm sure I would like it.

I would die to know what you actually labeled TSAM. That's awesome.

(Dell...really? How have you never seen that movie)

Oh, and middle left for me, near the stairs (I use the light)

    1. I labeled it "WWF RAW" with some phony date. Who wants to watch wrestling tapes besides me? lol

  8. Not a fan of love triangles either, but it's fun to complain about 'em! :) And yeah, the back row is the best. No one kicking my seat. :)

  11. I have yet to watch The Dreamers, that should really be on top of my list, I've started watching some of Louis Garrel's movies since last year. I don't remember much from There's Something About Mary, must re-watch that too.

  13. Ahah, I agree that love triangles are irritating as it's hard to get right. I never would have thought of There's Something About Mary but come to think of it, it's one that actually works. Curious about the other two as they're practically cult favorites.

  14. Havent seen The Dreamers although I've heard a lot about it. Probably because its directed by Bertolucci.
But Y Tu Mama Tambien is really great and I think TSAM is actually one of the few Farrelley Brothers thats actually funny.

    1. It is. It's probably the best Farrelley bros movie, IMO.

  15. I couldn't get into The Dreamers even though the story is about film fans. I'm not sure I liked the characters and couldn't watch them. I think I need to go back and give it another try.

    1. I really enjoyed how different is was, but I can see how those characters could be seen as unlikable. They're very hard to watch at times.
