Thursday Movie Picks: Movies with Memorable Declarations of Love

This week's Valentine's Day theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is movies with memorable declarations of love. Scenes like these are tricky, they can feel very corny or overly dramatic, but here are three of my favorites that I think work perfectly.

1) American Pie 2
This might seem like a weird one, but I love this scene in American Pie 2. It's so fitting with "Be Like That" by 3 Doors Down playing. (The American Pie movies always had the best soundtracks) It was a touching moment in a very raunchy film. How's that for a band camp story?

2) Slumdog Millionaire

I'm not sure if I've wanted two people to kiss more than I did while watching Slumdog Millionaire. Jamal says "this is our destiny" and Latika simply replies "kiss me" and followed by the words "it is written" on the screen. I love it. Even if they don't say "I love you" they might as well have.

3) The Empire Strikes Back

The only time "I know" is an acceptable response to "I love you."

Bonus: Never Been Kissed - completely corny and over the top, but I love that baseball scene.

  3. I ALMOST went with Empire Strikes Back - so simple but so perfect. Also LOVE Slumdog Millionaire - that ending is so perfect, and then, just in case you weren't convinced... BOLLYWOOD DANCE NUMBER. Perfection.

That Never Been Kissed moment is great, too.

    1. Yes Bollywood dance! I remember my husband was like "wtf is this?" when we were in the theater and I was just kind of like "SHUT UP THIS IS AWESOME!"

  4. Interesting choices, none of which occurred to me. Love when that happens. I'm surprised how often Empire Strikes Back is showing up today. It has been YEARS since I've seen Amer. Pie 2 and only have vague memories of it but that scene does work.

Good point about these scenes being tricky, it stinks when they're cheesy but can be fun when they're overly dramatic. The very idea of them lends itself to the over the top moment. I suspect my first two choices fall somewhat into that land but my last is more subdued even if it's contained in a wildly improbable situation.

Pride & Prejudice (2005)-Lovely adaptation of the Austen classic with Keira Knightley & Matthew MacFayden well matched as the headstrong Elizabeth Bennett and the reserved Mr. Darcy who secretly loves her. They are surrounded by a perfect supporting cast.

*Memorable Declaration-During a sweeping rainstorm in an isolated pavilion the drenched Darcy declares that he loves Lizzie most ardently!

Last of the Mohicans (1992)-Exciting, intense beautifully filmed reading of James Fenimore Cooper’s novel. Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe bring an electric chemistry to their characters which enhances all their scenes but particularly their romantic ones. Pitch perfect music score adds an extra dimension to the effectiveness of the film.

*Memorable Declaration-Under a waterfall fleeing from attacking Indians Nathaniel tells Cora when he must leave her “You be strong, you survive... You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you.”

Somewhere in Time (1980)-At the premier of his first play writer Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) is approached by a mysterious old woman who presses a locket into his hand with the words “Come back to me!” Years later Collier now a successful but blocked playwright impulsively takes a trip to an old resort where he spies a picture of once famous actress Elise McKenna (a breathtakingly beautiful Jane Seymour) from 70 years hence and becomes obsessed with her. Believing she is his destiny he searches for a way to travel back to her time. Preposterous but uber romantic time travel fantasy with the well matched leads and the gorgeous Mackinac Island selling the plot’s various implausibility’s for those able to suspend belief. Very involving if you like romantic movies.

*Memorable Declaration-In the guise of the character she is portraying on stage Elise goes off script and staring straight at Richard says: “The man of my dreams has almost faded now. The one I have created in my mind. The sort of man each woman dreams of, in the deepest and most secret reaches of her heart. I can almost see him now before me. What would I say to him if he were really here? "Forgive me. I have never known this feeling. I have lived without it all my life. Is it any wonder, then, I failed to recognize you? You, who brought it to me for the first time. Is there any way I can tell you how my life has changed? Any way at all to let you know what sweetness you have given me? There is so much to say... I cannot find the words. Except for these: I love you."

    1. I've only seen Pride and Prejudice. I thought about using it but I only saw that film once and I wasn't sure if I was remembering it right, so I went with films I've seen multiple times. Thanks for sharing your picks!

  5. Love that Han Solo moment. I guess "Suck me, beautiful" from the first AP movie doesn't work, huh.

  6. American Pie 2 is actually a good choice! It was really sweet despite the raunch. Slumdog is another film that has a great confession of love because I thought they did say "I Love You" and now realize they didn't! I picked The Empire Strikes Back also because everyone went to that movie so wanting Han and Leia to get together. I remember all the hoopla over this and everyone was wondering how it would play out which it did perfectly

    1. I remember thinking Empire was a perfect "I love you" at a really young age. They did it right. Most action/sci fi movies don't.

  7. Well right now the only one I can't think of is the Mr Darcy proposal in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies that ended up in a pretty intense fight, what a way to release sexual tension, woo wee!

"The only time "I know" is an acceptable response to 'I love you.'" Ahah, very true!!

  10. "I know". How can anyone top that? That is the best declaration of love. Whoa, I was about to say something that would spoil those who haven't seen the new film.
