Thursday Movie Picks: Summer Camp

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is something every kid either treasures or despises: going to a summer camp. I fucking hate camping. I did church camp once and girl scout camp another time and I hated every minute of it. I love being outdoors, but I also love coming home to warm shower and a nice clean bed...inside. Not getting rained on in tents. These three films are camping movies I preferred watching as a kid instead of doing the real thing.

1) Camp Nowhere

These kids are total shits, right? They don't want to go to real camp so they black mail their teacher into starting a fake camp with no adult supervision. Actually, I thought that was kind of awesome and Christopher Lloyd was sort of the man when I was a child. He was Emmett Brown AND the Pagemaster.

2) Heavy Weights

AKA that movie with all the fat camp jokes. You know that big trampoline into the lake looked awesome.

3) Bushwhacked

This movie is inherently creepy when you think about it. An escaped convict posing as a scout leader while on the run? A training bra gets used as a slingshot at one point. I watched this movie so much.

BONUS: Moonrise Kingdom - I love this movie, and I had to throw one serious pick in there.

  1. The pagemaster!!

I haven't seen any one these, apart from your bonus pick of which I love terribly.

  2. OMG Camp Nowhere! I haven't thought of that movie in YEARS. I'm also gushing a bit over the mention of The Pagemaster, one of my favorites from when I was a kid.

I can't believe I didn't think of Moonrise Kingdom this week, since I love it so. It's pretty much perfect.

  4. Great topic for Thursday Movie Picks and great timing, too. I definitely thought of Moonrise Kingdom too, and The Kings of Summer came to mind as well.

  5. I've only seen two of these, Heavyweights and Moonrise Kingdom both of which I liked but didn't love. They are perfect fits though.

Camp Nowhere sounds fun so I'll be checking that out but I'll have to think a bit on Bushwhacked.

I tried to do different aspects of camp, one strictly set at a kids camp, one about returning to one as adults and one where camp factored into the story but was the genesis of the plot.

Camp (2003)-At Camp Ovation, a summer theatre camp for young performers, a diverse group of kids come together and though at first there are tensions they eventually form close friendships. During their time there they also influence one of the counselors who has grown bitter with regret to move forward with his life. Because the film is just a little rough around the edges it makes the story and the kids much more real.

Indian Summer (1993)-A group of young adults (including Diane Lane, Bill Paxton and Elizabeth Perkins) gather at Camp Tamakwa outside Ontario where they spent their summers as kids for a 20th reunion. While they spend time reminiscing they also deal with problems of their present lives and try and find a way to keep the camp from closing down permanently.

Marjorie Morningstar (1958)-Beautiful college student Marjorie Morgenstern (Natalie Wood) spends her summer as a camp counselor at a Catskills resort. While there she becomes enamored with a performer at the camp, Noel Airman (Gene Kelly) a caddish older man who doesn’t take the romance seriously. Returning home Marjorie is pressured by her parents to marry and settle down. Still carrying a torch for Noel she pursues an acting career as Marjorie Morningstar while trying to make a relationship with the older man work. Various complications ensue including her Jewish parents objections to the Gentile Noel. Adaptation of a Herman Wouk novel has a rich studio look and a great cast, aside from Natalie and Gene there’s Claire Trevor, Carolyn Jones, Martin Balsam and a host of recognizable character actors.

    1. Probably Ben Stiller's character. I would have hated to go to that camp as a child.

    2. True, those counselors were the worst.

  8. Camp Nowhere, that was terrible. Plus, I really wanted to kick the shit out of Andrew Keegan at that time. Heavyweights was alright while Bushwhacked, not so much.

    1. lol I have no idea how most of these hold up now, the only one I've seen as an adult again was Heavy Weights, which I thought was still pretty amusing.

  11. I never saw your third pick, but the others were childhood staples for me as well. And Moonrise Kingdom is the best! Good picks!

  12. Haven't watched any of your picks except for your bonus. Like you I definitely love my bed and showers way too much to go camping, so I skipped on the "summer" camp experience as a kid.
