Thursday Movie Picks: Seven Deadly Sins - Gluttony

It's another Seven Deadly Sins edition at Wandering Through The Shelves and this week we're tackling Gluttony. This one was hard for me and one of my picks is SO obvious but I couldn't help it. Here are three films I enjoy that are on topic this week.

1) Se7en

Yes, I chose the film where some gluttonous dude is literally murdered and has GLUTTONY carved into his wall. But damn it, IT WORKS. This movie has slowly crept up my favorites list for years and has made its way into my top 5. I never get sick of watching it.

2) Spirited Away

Chihiro's parents fall into a very gluttonous trap in my favorite anime of all time. I love this movie and cannot recommend it enough. Even if you're not into anime or animation at all, this is worth the watch.

3) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Believe it or not, I actually like this one better than Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It's not great, but the acting from the children is leagues better and therefore makes it easier to watch even with the weird ass direction they took the Oompa Loompas and the lack of Gene Wilder. This film makes my list because of good ol' Augustus Gloop.

  1. I thought of Se7en but I haven't seen it since its theatrical run and while I admit it's a well made film it was too disturbing for me to ever feel the pull to watch again to refresh my memory of it.

I just can't with this version of Willie Wonka. My heart will always belong to the original and Gene Wilder. It was the very first thing that came to mind but I didn't use it since I have before.

Do I even have to say I've never seen Spirited Away? Didn't think so.

I struggled a bit with this week’s theme but then happened upon my first pick, which until now I hadn’t known existed. It’s a series of vignettes for each of the sins, most written by or with the involvement of some of the Monty Python troupe, and it’s provided me with at least one title for each transgression for the rest of the year!

The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins (1971)-Gluttony: The manufacturer of dietary biscuits Slimmo exhorts that you can exist on 8 of them a day while being a closet glutton with rich food hidden throughout his office. When he inevitably starts to gain weight the company doctor limits him to two biscuits a day but everywhere he looks he sees food! We follow his comic adventures as he tries to sneak whatever tidbits he can. But he pays for it in the end. Co-written by Monty Python’s Graham Chapman.

The Big Feast (aka La Grande Bouffe) (1973)-Four middle aged disenchanted French men of the bourgeoisie (including Marcello Mastroianni and Philippe Noiret) gather at the villa of one of their number with the express goal of eating themselves to death. Looking to indulge to the utmost they include three prostitutes in the party and from then on its food then sex, sex and food, sex while eating food and finally just food and more food. You might never want to eat again once it ends.

Cool Hand Luke (1967)-Non conformist Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) is behind bars on a Florida chain gang but his spirit isn’t imprisoned. While he is a thorn in the side of the guards he becomes a source of inspiration to the other inmates particularly after accepting a spur of the moment bet to eat 50 hard-boiled eggs in an hour. After he achieves the gluttonish goal he lays on a table splayed Christ like suffering but venerated.

    1. You should really give Spirited Away a chance. I know you don't like animation but it's really an extraordinary movie.

Cool Hand Luke is one of my husband's favorite movies, and I've only seen the egg scene, because that's always on when I see it on TV. For all I know that scene lasts an hour and a half. lol

  2. Se7en was such a riveting film! I considered using it as well, but went a different way. Haven't seen the other two, but they sound perfect for the theme.

  3. I went with Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory instead of the other film as I went more into the comedy route of the subject.

  4. Awesome list! I still need to watch Se7en, especially after I heard so many good things about that movie! Man, Spirited Away creeped me out so much when I was little, especially the scenes with No Face!

    1. I can see how Spirited Away could be scary. I'm surprised my son likes it so much, it never scared him. Se7en is AMAZING

  5. I have never seen Spirited away but I just thought of Winnie The Pooh. I don't care for this Willie Wonka version at all. Se7en is a very good film but so disturbing. I am going to try not to use this even though it is perfect for any of the sins

  6. I've not seen Spirited Away but the other picks are great. Se7en is also one of my favourites, I think I have a lot of Brad Pitt favourites to be honest.. like Snatch, Se7en and Fight Club... he has a great filmography.

Willy Wonka works great here, I . thought about this before I came up with the too much money theme.

  7. Se7en of course.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - I've seen this too but did not like it. Wasn't into the story and Depp once again is in one of those wacky roles where he is heavily made up.

  8. I'm not sure why I didn't go with these three. They fit perfectly!
