Thursday Movie Picks: Winter Horror

This week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is winter horror. Maybe you're one of those lucky ones like me who occasionally has to deal with snow in October. I hate it, but I don't hate scary movies in the snow. Here are a few horror films that take place during the winter.

1) Jack Frost

This one is honestly so dumb and I've only seen it once, but it immediately came to mind when I saw the theme. I had to use it.

2) 30 Days of Night

This film's Alaskan setting fits perfectly with the theme this week. I liked this movie a lot, and also enjoyed the graphic novel it was based on.

3) Frozen

This one is actually quite terrible. After a serious of unfortunate events that require a lot of disbelief to be suspended, three friends get stranded on a ski lift over the weekend in the frigid cold. Wolves show up. On paper, it is very tense but the film overall is poorly executed.

  1. I haven’t seen any of these and, yeah, the first one looks dumb. I will pass on the second because...too scary for me. The 3rd sounds good but what a shame it was not done properly.

    2. To be fair, Disney Princesses are terrible.

[/ducking; I have three nieces and had to put up with that stuff when they were young]

    3. This Frozen could've used a Disney princess.

  2. In my recurring theme this month I haven't seen any of these though at least I've heard of them this time out! The one I've heard the most positive things about is the second but I still don't think it's for me.

I managed to come up with three but only by using one (the second pick) that I thought was dumb as dirt but hey it's a narrow field of choices! :-)

Dead of Winter (1987)-When struggling actress Katie McGovern (Mary Steenburgen) answers a vague casting call for a leading role she is approached by the mysterious Mr. Murray (Roddy McDowall) and invited to a snowy upstate New York mansion to film a screen test. Upon arrival she meets Dr. Lewis (Jan Rubes) who eagerly hires her to replace an actress she is told suffered a nervous breakdown. However Katie shortly begins to realize dark forces are at work and trapped by both the men and the snow she soon fears for her life.

The Abominable Snowman (1957)-British scientist John Rollason (Peter Cushing) and his wife Helen (Maureen Connell) wile away their days studying plants at a monastery in the Himalayas. When his American associate Tom Friend (Forrest Tucker) arrives he proposes an expedition to find the mysterious creature Yeti aka The Abominable Snowman. Despite warnings the pair set out along with Friend's partner (Robert Brown) and a guide (Michael Brill) who claims he can find the beast. However the trip quickly becomes more dangerous than they had anticipated.

The Thing from Another World (1951)-The Air Force sends in Captain Hendry (Kenneth Tobey) and his team to the remote North Pole research base headed by scientist Dr. Arthur Carrington (Robert Cornthwaite) when he reports a crashed UFO nearby. Upon investigation they discover a strange frozen creature (James Arness). Bringing it back to the base the men quibble over how to proceed, meanwhile the creature is mistakenly defrosted and watch out!!

    1. Has there ever been a good movie about a yeti? lol I haven't seen any of your choices this week but Thing From Another World sounds like something I should watch.

    2. The Thing is very 50's sci-fi but it was VERY popular when it came out and has been influential on the genre ever since so for a historical aspect if nothing else it's sort of an essential.

Dead of Winter is better than it should be thanks to Mary Steenburgen and Roddy McDowell. It's a remake of a neat and tidy B movie from the 40's with a deserved good reputation of being able to do a lot with a small budget named "My Name is Julia Ross". I would have used that but it didn't have a winter setting, that was one of the changes in the newer adaptation.

    3. 50's Sci-fi I can handle, I'll get to it eventually. I really like Mary Steenburgen, I should check that out too.

  3. We'll disagree on 30 Days of Night. That's my go-to example of a movie with a fantastic premise, great monsters (I love that feral version of vampires) and terrible execution. I've got a lot of willingness to suspend my disbelief, but there's a lot of ridiculousness in that movie I just can't get beyond.

    1. That movie was pretty mixed, so I get it. Truthfully the actors weren't very strong in it, but visually I really enjoy it.

  4. I'm not sure I've seen any of them but Frozen sounds like an interesting idea. Too bad it wasn't well executed!

    1. It was but the way they end up stuck on the ski lift irks me to no end. I just don't believe a mistake like that would be made lol

  5. I've seen both Frozen and Jack Frost and I have to admit that both of these movies were ridiculous! I also have Jack Frost on my list too!

  6. Frozen is the one film I hadn't seen on that list. Jack Frost is fucking hilarious. I laughed my ass off during that whole film. 30 Days of Night I thought was alright.

  7. 30 Days of Night is a blast. I've been meaning to watch Jack Frost for the train wreck factor. Haven't seen Frozen. At least not this one.

  8. Jack Frost is a fun campy bad movie. I agree that you haver to suspend belief quite a bit with Frozen but it does have some good tense filled moments

    1. It does, but I could not let go of the fact that they got stuck there in the first place. Where's the quality control? lol

  9. I really like 30 Days of Night as well.
I've seen Frozen too, but don't remember as much.

  10. I haven't seen any of these but your last two picks are on my watchlist. I had no idea Jack Frost was a horror by the way.

    1. There's another movie with that same title that's a family film. I think they came out a few years apart.
