Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Space/Aliens

Well folks, 2020 is finally almost over and we're now at the final theme of Wandering Through The Shelves' TMP. This week we're talking about aliens and space on the small screen. Here's what I came up with.

1) The X-Files

My go to aliens. This is a show that will always have a special place in my heart.

2) Space Force

This on the other hand, was terrible. I really hope they completely revamp the show for the second season because the first one just did not work.

3) The Mandalorian

My current favorite space fix. After what The Rise of Skywalker did last year, it just feels nice to be excited about Star Wars again. Bless this show.

  1. I love the X-Files and found it to be so eerie at times..love Skinner. I have not seen the other 2 but the last one seems to be It show for the year.

    1. X-Files was pretty scary, especially "Home." It's my favorite episode because it was so disturbing at the time. It stuck with me.

  2. I've seen a show or two of the X Files but sci-fi on a weekly basis really isn't my bag so it never did much for me since I never was interested enough to follow the skein of the story. I do like David Duchovny though.

I've never heard of the other two. Since you're very unenthusiastic about the first and I'm very unenthusiastic about most things Star Wars I doubt I'll ever bother with either.

This was a tough week for me since as I said sci-fi as a weekly diet isn't for me, I do enjoy a good sci-fi film but those are one and dones. So I had to reach way back to my childhood for two (and was as surprised as anybody that one of them turned out to be animated!) and a more recent one that only lasted a year.

The Jetsons (1962-1963)-Meet George Jetson…his boy Elroy…daughter Judy….Jane, his wife….they’re the modern space age fam-i-ly. Fun animated series is a sort of futuristic spin on The Flintstones.

Lost in Space (1965-1968)-The five members of the Robinson family-Professor John Robinson (Guy Williams), wife Maureen (June Lockhart), and their three children: Judy (Marta Kristen); Penny (Angela Cartwright); and Will (Billy Mumy) set off on a mission to an Earth-like planet in another galaxy accompanied by U.S. Space Corps Major Donald West (Mark Goddard) as co-pilot. Once cryogenically frozen the controls of the ship are sabotaged by foreign agent Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) who becomes trapped on the ship and the next thing you know they are all “Lost in Space”!

Life on Mars (2008)-New York City police detective Sam Tyler (Jason O'Mara) is struck by a car in 2008 and regains consciousness in 1973. As he struggles to adapt to his new circumstances without tipping his hand he butts heads with Gene Hunt (Harvey Keitel) his chief of detectives and a determined policewoman Annie Norris (Gretchen Mol) who is fighting the inherent sexism of the era. As time passes Sam begins to suspect that not only may he be in another time but another dimension as well.

Happy New Year! It's gotta be better than this one!

    1. I'm kicking myself for not thinking of The Jetsons. I would've used them instead of Space Force. I watched that all the time when I was a kid, especially the movie. I had that on VHS.

  3. Nice picks! Yes and Yes to The X-Files and Space Force. How Space Force was even renewed while so many other better shows was canceled is mind-boggling.

    1. It really is. The only way S2 will work is if they completely retool everything. I think it's impossible.

  4. Good picks! I adored The Mandalorian but gave up on Space Force after a few eps. As a child even the sound of the opening theme to The X Files freaked me out. Maybe I should give it a go now I'm in my 30s!

  5. I need to binge-watch The Mandalorian as I did see the clips of Luke Skywalker. Oh man... that was cool. Anyone who disses Rian Johnson shall be given the force choke from Baby Yoda.

  6. I missed this week's TMP, but I'd definitely put The Mandalorian on my list as well. Man that finale is amazing. I still need to see Space Force.

I LOVE Battlestar Galactica of the mid 2000s and The Expanse, so those three would be my picks of great sci-fi series.

    1. Skip Space Force lol. It's so dumb. My husband recently started the Expanse and he loves it! He loved Battlestar too.

  8. Still haven't Space Force because I heard the reviews were just so-so.
Disney+ is finally going to be available in Feb so I'll finally get to see The Mandalorian.
