Review: The Suicide Squad

Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) once again uses her team of super villains to neutralize a threat. Led once again by a more chill Rick Flag (Joel Kimmaman) we see some familiar faces like the newly jailed again Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and some new ones in the form of Bloodsport (Idris Elba) a marksmen who is being blackmailed into the squad. 

Five years after David Ayers released his embarrassment of a movie, James Gunn gives us The Suicide Squad we should've had all along. He dials up the gore, the ridiculous characters (Hello King Shark and Weasel) and there's plenty of one liners to make us laugh throughout. 

Margot Robbie continues to be the star of the DCEU, but it's Idris Elba who I loved watching the most. He's not simply a Will Smith replacement from the first go around, his character was just fun to watch and I loved his report with Ratcatcher II (Daniela Melchior) her sweetness was much needed in a film full of characters who are unapologetic assholes. Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) was the biggest surprise. I could not believe how much I was invested in him. Viola Davis might not have a ton of screen time but she makes the most of every scenes she's in. She's absolutely ruthless.

As much as there is to praise, I can acknowledge that the film isn't perfect. It's a tad overlong and loses steam a bit in the middle, which causes the ending to feel rushed and wrapped up far too quickly for how big of a threat it ended up being. But I'm glad this movie exists. It was the perfect fun for a Friday night.

    I'm going to wait for it when it's on HBO as I'm aware that it's flawed but still fun. Plus, I'm sure it's way more fun than what David Ayer has created and I have no interest in his director's cut since I don't think he's worthy to have a director's cut.

      Considering one of Ayer's problems was that he didn't reign in Jared Leto at all, I can't see how a Director's Cut would fix anything. It would just be an overlong mess like Snyder's.

    I think Amanda is the greatest DCEU villain. She's SO cold. Loved Margot and Idris too.

    Yes!! This was so much better than the last Suicide Squad movie. James Gunn unleashed is such a treat and exactly what these characters needed.

    I preferred Idris! (Possibly an unfair comparison since I think this was the better movie by far.) But I thought he anchored it better and had a nice grumpy sweetness about him that shone through. It was such a fun movie!

Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) has quietly been trying to make a difference as The Batman in Gotham. He can't be everywhere. He works closely with Lt Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and they face a puzzling crime by a masked murderer going by The Riddler. Thursday Movie Picks: Wedding Movies

How fitting that Wandering Through The Shelves has us start the month of June with movies about weddings. June brides are a thing, right? At least that's what people kept telling me when I got married in June. I just picked it because it was warm. To be honest, I don't like many wedding movies, so this was kind of tough, but here's a few I can tolerate. 1) Wedding Crashers This is one of my favorite comedies until the last 20 minutes or so when it falls flat on its face. But it's so hilarious and quotable before all of that, I can forgive it. Lock it up. 2) Rachel Getting Married I used this one for a pick last year but it's easily my favorite movie involving a wedding. The acting is fantastic. I 3) Corpse Bride Truth be told, I wasn't crazy about Corpse Bride, but like I said. Slim pickings in the wedding movie world for me. I'd watch this over a "classic" like My Best Friend's Wedding or Runaway Bride any day.  click th

Random Ramblings: The Radio Flyer Conundrum

Recently, I was talking to someone about who I thought were the best child actors when I was also a child.  Two that really stood out to me were Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello, and one film those two were in together was called Radio Flyer.  Then I was reminded about the uniqueness of this film. Instead of reviewing the film, I wanted to have an open discussion about the ending. It deals with a tough issue; child abuse. What I’ve noticed is the way that the film ends is interpreted many different ways, and the filmmakers never came forward to say what was right and wrong.
