Thursday Movie Picks: Movies That Confused You

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is one that I suggested - movies that confuse you. If I don't "get" a movie, I'll admit that. It happens, and that's okay. Here are three movies that come to mind immediately that left me flabbergasted at the end.

1) The Fountain -
Admittedly, I keep a list of movies I'm going to give a second chance to, and this is on that list, but I was so confused when leaving this movie. It's one of my husband's favorites, but I left it just thinking it was dumb. I don't remember much about the plot now other than I kept asking myself "Why?" throughout, but this one was a no for me.

2) Madeline's Madeline -
This film got a lot of indie buzz and when I watched it I thought it was an absolute mess. It was so disjointed and I just didn't get it. I was incredibly disappointed with this.

3) Tenet -
I love Christopher Nolan, I'll admit it, but I still don't understand what he was doing with this. There was a point during this film that I turned to my husband and asked "who are they even fighting?" and neither of us had any idea. This is one I'll try to revisit again in a few years, and hopefully I'll be able to appreciate it more then.

  1. Ahh yes, I heard of these films and have no desire to see them because f the confusion. I don’t know but I always feel. Like the filmmaker is trying to make me feel stupid for not understanding their pretentious snotty movies.

    1. I like to take my movies home with me, but if I'm still trying to figure it out days later, then they can just keep their drivel. lol

  2. I'm probably in the minority here but I loved Tenet and understood what was going on the whole time.

  3. I've only seen The Fountain and my reaction was much like yours. I was even forewarned that it was confusing so I thought maybe that might help me be more aware and therefore less at a loss while watching but nope.

Your second is new to me but I've heard Tenet is a mess. A shame since I usually like Christopher Nolan films too.

I came up with three but their inclusion should in no way suggest a recommendation!!

Brazil (1985)-Some low-level flunky (Jonathan Pryce) in a world dominated by machines and technology spends his time daydreaming to escape his mundane existence leading to a muddled mess of confusion and ennui for the audience.

Eraserhead (1977)-In the gloomy city Henry (John Nance) lives in a bleak apartment with his wife Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) a one night stand he knocked up. When the baby comes it’s a bizarre lizard-like creature that won't stop wailing. Henry tries to find the reasoning behind this from the other tenants, including a disfigured lady who lives inside a radiator, but answers aren’t easy to come by. In my case they were impossible.

Liquid Sky (1982)- An alien creature invades New York's punk subculture in its search for an opiate released by the brain during orgasm or something like that, I’ll be damned if I could figure out what the point was or if this thing even had one!

  4. The Fountain! I completely forgot about that movie. I watched it because of the wild spectrum of reviews and was just left not even knowing how to feel.

  5. Great list! I still need to watch Tenet. I've been hearing lots of good things about that movie and I'm a fan of Christopher Nolan's works too!

    1. I really like Nolan's movies which was why I was gutted that I was so underwhelmed by it.

  6. The Fountain remains my least favorite film by Darren Aronofsky as it was confusing. I haven't seen Madeline's Madeline while I have Tenet in my new DVR list as I'm trying to find the right time to watch it and maybe try and make sense of it. If not, then Nolan needs a co-writer.

    1. If not a co-writer, then someone to tell him to chill every now and then. lol

  7. Tenet is perhaps the most confusing films I've seen that I still enjoyed. I still haven't rewatched it again though after reading a bunch of articles and watching videos about it, I might get more out of it the 2nd time around.

    1. Yeah, I wouldn't cal Tenet *bad* by any stretch, I just didn't get it lol. When I'm ready to give it a second go, I'll have to look up some articles first.

  8. Nice picks! The Fountain is one of my favorites too. I'm pretty much on board until a few details at the end - then it loses me. But I still love it overall. Tenet wasn't so confusing to me. I was just bored. lol

  9. The Fountain is like Cloud Atlas for me, like the only thing that connects the different stories is that they used the same actors. I did like the score a lot though.
