Review: The Killer

Official synopsis:
After a fateful near-miss, an assassin (Michael Fassbender) battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn't personal.

Thankfully David Fincher left behind all the boring nonsense with Mank and brought us another tight thriller instead. Everything about this film is precise. Neat, tidy, even if our main character starts off the film with a pretty jarring error.

I've always enjoyed narration as a plot device and it works very well here. Michael Fassbender takes us on a very mundane ride through his character's day to day and yet it's never boring. The Killer (yes, that's what he's credited as) is a man of repetition and you can tell this narration isn't just for us. It's how he justifies his unique position.

The film is shot beautifully and contains some excellent fight choreography. I appreciate just how easy it was to see everything. Nearly everything I've watched on streaming recently has had to be in a pitch black room just to make out what's happening in the darker scenes but I never once had that problem here. Hats off to DP Erik Messerschmidt.

The Killer might be middle of the road Fincher, but even that makes for a good watch. The Killer is now streaming on Netflix.

  1. I really want to see this as a fan of David Fincher despite not having seen Mank (as I didn't have access to Netflix on a Smart TV then) but I hope to rectify that but also figure out how to get access to Netflix as there's stuff my mother wants to watch on the big TV. I'll take middle of the road Fincher over anything. Plus, I'm curious to hear what songs from the Smiths are used in the film as well as the music of NIN.

Speaking of Trent Reznor. It seems like him, the guys from Pearl Jam, and Dave Grohl have all seem to be well-adjusted and have gone through all of the bad things. Yet, Billy Corgan has become a fucking joke as he just blew a major TV deal for the NWA by having some old guy snort cocaine on a PPV event and the CW went like "oh hell no" and ended up making a deal with WWE to have NXT on CW. Oh, and that new album by the Pumpkins that came out months ago was BORING!

    1. You are definitely not missing a thing by not seeing Mank. Amanda Seyfried's scenes on youtube would suffice. I'm really not familiar with the Smiths work so the music didn't stick out to me, unfortunately.
