2015 BAFTA Nominations

These came out yesterday, but since Fridays are my Indie Gem days, I decided to post them a day late. I always enjoy the BAFTAs because they tend to nominate performances that mostly everyone else skips over. This year, that was Rene Russo in Nightcrawler. Here's a look at the nominees. My thoughts follow in green.

BEST FILM
Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
The Theory of Everything
This is kind of exactly how I pictured them going.

BEST BRITISH FILM
'71
The Imitation Game
Paddington
Pride
The Theory of Everything
Under the Skin
Paddington came out already? But hey, Pride is in there!

BEST FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Ida
Leviathan
The Lunchbox
Trash
Two Days One Night
I've only seen Ida out of these, and that film was kind of a let down.

BEST DIRECTOR
Wes Anderson - The Grand Budapest Hotel
Damian Chazelle - Whiplash
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu - Birdman
Richard Linklater - Boyhood
James Marsh - The Theory of Everything

BEST ACTRESS
Amy Adams - Big Eyes
Felicity Jones - The Theory of Everything
Julianne Moore - Still Alice
Rosamund Pike - Gone Girl
Reese Witherspoon - Wild
I'm guessing this is how the Oscars will look? Unless Aniston can really sneak in over Adams.

BEST ACTOR
Benedict Cumberbatch - The Imitation Game
Ralph Fiennes - The Grand Budapest Hotel
Jake Gyllenhaal - Nightcrawler
Michael Keaton - Birdman
Eddie Redmayne - The Theory of Everything
GYLLENHAAL YAAASSSS BITCH!!! Sorry, this is huge for him though. He, Carrell, and Oyelowo are competing for that 4th and 5th spot. I think he has a good chance now. (Sorry Fiennes, I don't think you're getting in the Oscar race)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Patricia Arquette - Boyhood
Keira Knightley - The Imitation Game
Imelda Staunton - Pride
Emma Stone - Birdman
Rene Russo - Nightcrawler
This is awesome that Rene Russo is here. I would love it if she got in the Oscar race. Same with Staunton.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Steve Carell -Foxcatcher
Ethan Hawke - Boyhood
Edward Norton - Birdman
Mark Ruffalo - Foxcatcher
J.K. Simmons - Whiplash
What the fuck is Carell doing in supporting?

RISING STAR AWARD
Gugu Mbatha-Raw
Jack O'Connell
Margot Robbie
Miles Teller
Shailene Woodley
Spectacular Now reunion!

OUTSTANDING DEBUT, BRITISH WRITER/DIRECTOR/or  PRODUCER
Gregory Burke & Yann Demange - '71
Stephen Beresford & David Livingstone - Pride
Elaine Constantine - North Soul

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn
The Imitation Game - Graham Moore
Paddington - Paul King
The Theory of Everything - Anthony McCarten

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Birdman - Alejandor Gonzalez Inarritu, Nicolas, Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr, and Armando Bo
Boyhood - Richard Linklater
Grand Budapest Hotel - Wes Anderson
Nightcrawl - Damien Chazelle
Whiplash - Damien Chazelle
And there's Whipash, which stupidly gets put in Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars. I need to take a moment to talk about Boyhood here. This does NOT deserve a screenplay nomination. In fact, the only thing it really deserves is Best Director for the commitment, and maybe, just maybe Best Supporting Actress, but that is pushing it. There was nothing outstanding about the screenplay. Kid grows up,has a shitty step father, tries drugs, learns valuable lesson. Wtf, that's not award worthy!

  1. Antonio Sanchez's ineligible Birdman score is an ugly reminder of Johnny Greenwood's ineligible There Will Be Blood score at the '08 Oscars.

I love that Rene Russo got nominated as well. Well deserved.

    1. Ohhh yes, I forgot about Greenwood. I loved There Will Be Blood, and the score made it all the more uncomfortable.

  2. BAFTAs are such a joke. They want to be relevant but they really aren't. I mean Carell in supporting, the fuck is that? I don't know why Oyelowo is even in the talk, he just stood there the entire movie

    1. I liked that the BAFTAs nominate people like Paul Dano and James McAvoy who always get snubbed, but come on. Carrell for supporting? lol

  3. I think Carrell IS the supporting character in Foxcatcher. The movie is about channing's character, but of course Carrell and ruffallo act circles around him. LOVE Boyhood, HATE Whiplash. I actually like Ida the more I think about it (kinda love it at this point). I agree about the score for Birdman (huge oversight)

    1. You didn't like Whiplash? Noooo! lol. I'm looking forward to that. Ida sounded so good on paper but was just a let down.

  4. Nightcrawler got a huge boost here. I'm thinking Gyllenhaal gets in at the Oscars, with Oyelowo, Carell, or even Bradley Cooper replacing Fiennes.

  5. This list reminds me of how many good movies I haven't seen yet.
