Indie Gems: Coldwater
Juvie from hell.
A teenager, Brad (P.J Boudousque) is sent to a strict juvenile reform facility run by an ex marine. Col. Frank Reichert (James C. Burns) He soon realizes that not only is this place intense, but the power hungry staff make some seriously questionable choices when it comes to the treatment of the residents.
The schtick of a troubled youth going to an awful reform school has been done plenty of times. Still, it never stops being interesting. I think there's a lot of good treatment programs out there, but I don't for one second think places like this don't exist.
This film is very bleak, and at times reminded me of The King of Devil's Island, but that's not a bad thing. Boudousque shows a lot of promise in this performance. I found this to be an intensely interesting study on the choices Brad had to make once he found himself in this situation. Just when you think things can't get worse, they do.
Grade: A
Memorable Quote: "Why are you here after everything that happened?" - Brad (P.J Boudousque)
According to Alex's list, it's a rotten movie and I can't believe it! I liked this film a lot, like a lot a lot so it's ridiculous that it is generally thought as a bad movie. Shame on those people who think this is rotten!
ReplyDeleteHe has it listed as rotten? I'm pretty sure I threw this in my Netflix queue because he gave it a good review. Whoops lol
DeleteGreat review! I love the first paragraph. This is the second recommendations I've read for this film. I am waiting for Netflix to get it. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Netflix has it on discs, that's how I watched it.
DeleteI remember when Alex recommended this on his blog too. I really should see this! Great write up, as usual.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteGreat review! I really enjoyed the hell out of this film too, I can't for the life of me figure out why many critics didn't like it.
ReplyDeleteNeither can I. Maybe it was too depressing?
DeleteYou and Alex both liked this, so I guess I need to give it a look. :)
ReplyDeleteI think you'd dig it!
